Baffled by Stupidity: Richard Dawkins

shagen454 says...

That is what I am saying. THE pixie dust does exist - you could snort if you wanted to and it would show you - many cultures have for thousands of years - it's called Yopo contains (Bufotenin (5-HO-DMT), 5-MEO-DMT and NN DMT) - I would NOT recommend doing it (take NN DMT and smoke it or do Ayahuasca to get there). But, it's not going to be about what your puny ape brain considers "ever lasting" it is something completely different - to some degree it seems that we are eternal but not in way of ever lasting memory of one life to another, but it does contain "death" as well and you will remember that you've been there before even though it's beyond any fucking ape insect of Earth's imagination or comprehension. Do it and find out for yourself, lol! I was just as cynical as Dawkins about the afterlife until 4 seconds into the experience... it's like an atomic fucking bomb of alien consciousness (gold mine).

Reading these comments, how can believers chalk up something tragic to being part of "God's Plan", if mankind having free will means the deity doesn't necessarily know what is going to happen?

Maybe on my deathbed I will grasp at straws and wish for everlasting life but in my daily life it just sounds like a Hallmark sentiment that people use to comfort themselves and others. There’s not enough pixie dust in the universe for me to snort to get me to believe in everlasting anything, much less shout it from the rooftops. (my essence/soul/personality/memories will be around long after our sun collapses, just because I accepted a deity "into my heart"?).

Some child rapist/murderer repents on his deathbed with seconds to go, and St Peter throws the switch on his soul train to where he now has eternal life instead of eternal damnation. Again, not enough pixie dust.

Snowden outlines his motivations during first tv interview

Yogi says...

This is my point I don't give a fuck what Greenwald or Snowden wants, I want a Nuclear Fucking Bomb. I want every little secret from every administration to come out and I want to plant a baseball bat into the side of every bastards head who has supported the evil that is done around the world.

You want to talk about morality? Not killing everyone involved in this is immoral.

ChaosEngine said:

Not even Greenwald wants that. There are genuine reasons for some information to be kept secret, both moral and practical.

On the moral side, everyone involved has said there is information in there that could lead directly to people being killed.

On the practical side, the second they do that and someone is killed, they instantly lose all credibility.

I don't give a shit if Joe Bloggs is a CIA agent undercover with Spectre. It's not relevant to me. I DO care that the NSA are spying on everyone. Snowden is doing the right thing.

Snowden outlines his motivations during first tv interview

Yeah and I agree that's how to keep it in the news and be responsible with the information. I'm saying that I don't give a shit anymore, I'm tired and cranky and I want all the information dumped, like a nuclear fucking bomb. I want everyone in government to get scared enough of their population that they barricade themselves and lets have a decade of fucking War trying to lynch every one of those mother fuckers.

I'm sick of it, release all the spys names all over the world, all the troops positions. Fuck them, fuck everyone, let's finish this shit.

@Yogi

Releasing everything in one big pile didn't get us anywhere in case of the Afghan War Logs, the Iraqi War Logs or the Gitmo Files. Piece by piece keeps it front and center, at least over here in Europe. Not to mention the fact that it also nullifies all criticisms of careless dumping of sensitive info, which reduces his risk of lead poisoning.

Bill Nye the Science Guy Dispels Poverty Myths

poolcleaner says...

I think these so-called unstoppable warlords that siphon off our aid is an even bigger myth. The United States of America defeated the British Empire, invaded Nazi Europe, dropped a nuclear fucking bomb on Axis Japan, sacrificed thousands of lives in Vietnam, stood head to head against the USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis, landed on the moon, funded Nicaraguan revolutionaries using money from arms sales to Iran, assassinated Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, lied about weapons of mass destruction and invaded Iraq, fight the Taliban in Afghanistan, and yet we can't deal with warlords and civil wars in Africa where (at least with Rwandan civil war) weaponry is in the form of crate after crate of machetes made in China?

If all of those things are possible for the biggest super power in the world, how is it not possible to stop these warlords from siphoning our aid?

Lies.

We don't care so nothing of real consequence happens. All of those above events have one thing in common: our own goddamn self interest.

Everything sucks. May god have mercy on everyone's soul.

I hate to get on Bill Nye, and I agree with the need for more foreign aid even. I must protest non the less about war being a minor factor in poverty and related deaths. Blaming the millions that die of starvation and malnutrition in Africa on that alone is little different than saying that the millions who starved under Stalin and Mao could have been saved by foreign aid.

Even when there isn't active warfare in the most poverty ridden places of the world, there are warlords and criminals ruling the region through starvation and actively redirecting what little foreign aid there is to themselves and away from those that do not support them. Simply sending more food and money to places like Somalia or North Korea does nothing to help the people there, and if the aid is naively sent blind to whomever holds power it actually makes things WORSE by strengthening the very monsters responsible for the suffering. I'd like to believe our apathy here is the biggest problem as much as the next guy, but the reality is that there are also people local to the problem involved first hand in perpetuating and profiting from human suffering. If we refuse to admit that there are instances were 'aid' necessarily takes the form of shooting the bad guys then we are doomed to watching as the next genocide plays out, as we did for the Rwandan Tutsis, Iraqi Kurds and Shias and countless others.

Cluster Bomb vs Cement Mixer

burdturgler says...

What do you know about these bombs? Exactly what is their rate of failure? What is their yield when they detonate? What precision do you expect from war? Are you objecting to war in general or just these weapons? Look, no one wants any innocent to die. But if we are in a war than we have to destroy the enemy. That means we have to drop fucking bombs to destroy their tanks, planes, infrastructure, communications etc. That's reality. We are using the most state of the art weapons platforms on Earth to ensure minimal civilian casualties. No other country on this planet goes to such great lengths to make sure that the people we kill are actually the enemy. None. This isn't about agreeing with Iraq or any of that shit. Those guys there don't have the luxury of that shit. They are in a war. They're fighting for their lives. These are the weapons we use. Their enemies are the ones to use improvised explosives that look like dolls etc. All of our ordinance is labeled and marked in international symbols. Don't blame us for using bombs in a war zone.
Making statements about "leaving behind millions of bomblets" is complete bullshit. It's just not reality. Not even close.
