Dick Dale - Surfin the Wedge - Live on TV 1963 Ed Sullivan S

I was thinking, wasn't that composition called Misirlou? It turns out that is the name of an Eastern Mediterranean folk song that is the basis of the guitar solo. Pretty awesome, check out some earlier versions.

Also I can't listen to this without thinking of how lazy and awful the black eyed peas version is. "Ahh Ahh Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhblarg"

Classical Pianist Plays Tetris Theme On Custom Arcade Piano

oritteropo says...

Before it was the Tetris theme, Korobeiniki was a Russian folk song about a Peddler and a girl. I posted a version with lyrics as a comment to the first related link here:

Bob Dylan - 'Hurricane' ... intense lyrics

In the description of the final version, they explain how they come to be covering it:

This song has haunted me for years. Its a very famous well love Russian folk song, and its melody just wormed in to head. One day were where touring through Liepzig, Germany, and in fact we were standing in the shadow of Bach's cathedral, when this weathered old man walked by playing it on his accordion. I said to the band, "man, I would love to cover that song, and put thats guys playing as the intro to it!" But he walked past, and that was that.

Later that night, I turn another cobblestone corner, and there was the old accordion master again! So I hit record on my iPhone, and walked up to him and requested that song. He didn't speak english, I didn't speak German, but we both spoke music.

This album has 13 songs, and they are all amazing!

Russian Truckers - Expertise, experience, and luck

I don't recall any Russian folk songs in anime. Any clue what type of anime? I think I've heard every type of music EXCEPT Russian folk in anime. I could be wrong though.

Or is it more of the "Pulp Fiction theme (Dick Dale) sounds like orthodox jewish music" kinda comparison?

I swear this music is from an anime theme-song.

Chinese folk song with excellent dancing

OMG, the fingernails-on-blackboard-like singing, the incredibly awkward and completely uncoordinated dance moves, the androgynous guy/girl in the middle, the static camerawork that only alternates different angles of zoom... this video is officially the new poster child for the terrible channel.
In fact, I'll go so far as to say we don't need any other videos in the terrible channel besides this one--it makes every video currently in there looking fucking great in comparison.

Don't forget that its 13 minutes long O_o

Bryn Terfel sings Turtle Dove

jmzero says...

What's the background of this song? It's clearly related to Burns' "Red Red Rose"; is this a musical setting (with some word changes) of the poem - or is the poem based on an older folk song (or something)?

Secret Of The Sea - Billy Bragg & Wilco

oritteropo says...

I first heard of Billy Bragg in the 80s, my music teacher told tales of this mad English guy who got up on stage with an amp, an electric guitar, and half sang half screamed really subversive folk songs.

He seems to have calmed down a bit since then.

Bob Saget Does An Old English Folk Song

Porksandwich says...

More power to you, I am not sure if either version of the song is "as old as the hills" or one of those "when I was your age" uphill, snow, man eating rabbits stories that some how is supposed to make the story true because it might be old.

Hope you at least checked out the animated version before deciding. Personally I look at it like paid performer Bob Saget ran out of material, so I hope the song is old or he's not giving someone credit.

Reminds me of.....which with the animation is a better version.

Ugh sorry to be picky, but when i hear someone say that an animated, modernised version of a folk song posted on newgrounds is better than a man sat singing a song as old as the hills to a crowd of laughing people using an instrument as old as the hills, i die a little inside
