If Everything Was Bundled Like Cable

ant says...

I have to get cable for broadband Internet (no FIOS, DSL, etc.) and TV (can't get all the local channels I want OTA).

Hello lucky760,

I am blacklisted ! / ? / !? / ?!

...at least at/on my primary puter or my DSL connection or its IP.

If you were not aware I'm sure you are now, I am not computer savvy.

Best guess...deading vids I had a particular porn site come up several different times yesterday. I expeditiously exited and continued. Upon returning home last night I sought to continue. My screen locked up, I received the spinning beachball of death, could not force quit or restart so resorted to "pulling the plug." I backed up and retired.

This morning I resumed and was quickly treated to an 80's video, blacklisted.

Is malware a good guess?

Verizon Fios throttles Netflix - Net Neutrality

spawnflagger says...

My biggest complaint about Verizon is that they took all these tax benefit arrangements with many states, in return for the promise to build out "broadband" infrastructure. In those agreements, Verizon said they would do FTTH (fiber-to-the-home, 10Mbps or more), but some years later they conveniently redefined "broadband" as 512kbps DSL, after saving 10s of millions of dollars from each of those states.

That is literally criminal (breach of contract), but nothing ever happened to them for doing so.

Once the infrastructure is built, Verizon (and Comcast, AT&T, TimeWarner, etc) profit margin is ENORMOUS. (more than any oil company makes on gasoline, by %)

If they are going to charge so much, they should at least deliver what they promise, and make an effort to make popular sites (netflix, youtube) as fast as possible.

I don't mind if ISPs attempt to throttle certain criminal sites (piratebay, sarahpalinchannel, etc)

Dial Up Modem Handshake Sound - Spectrogram

ant says...

I agree. In U.S., we can go only go up to 53K due to FCC rules. I wished mine could go that fast. Mine never did and still doesn't! Stupid outdated GTE/Verizon phone systems with no DSL and FIOS for my neighborhoods!

Nexxus said:

I believe this is a 56k modem, because of the ramp up at 22 secs.

What Is Your Favourite Video Game Music? (Videogames Talk Post)

ant says...

Yeah. The sad part is that even with 56k dial-up modems, my neighbors and I cannot never go higher than 31200 (very rare) and 3 kB/sec (assuming data is already compressed and no line noises). It has been like this since the 1990s/90s and still is like that today (still have my external serial USR Sportster 33.6k dial-up modem as a back up when my cable goes down!). I can't even get DSL (20K ft. to CO!). Crappy phone line systems here in this old city.

radx said:

Bloody hell, 56k was expensive as hell. I distinctly remember forking over some 400 bucks once at the end of a month in the late '90s, just for having played some Counter-Strike. Outlaws was even earlier, back when you paid for internet access with gold-pressed latinum.

No, sir, no internet gaming for radx during those days. We hauled our rigs into someone's cellar, then played until we ran out of provisions.

The First Honest Cable Company

ant says...

What about satellite and fibers?

I have to use cable for its Internet due to no DSL (20+K ft. to CO), fiber (damn Verizon and Google, come to my homes), etc.

Whatever, OTA (over the air) FTW (for the win).

DNS Issue Today (Sift Talk Post)

Boise_Lib says...

Two days without the sift was hell for an addict like me.

As @Deano suggested a tweet would be a good way to communicate these types of problems. A Sift Talk only works if you can get to Videosift. After complaining to my DSL service I was instructed in how to get Vs by using the 216. number. That worked to show me that Vs still existed, but I could only see the first half of your sift talk post--not the instructions on how to fix the host file.

All better now that I can get my fix.
[I freaked out trying to figure if Big Brother was after Vs--or ME!]

Why do YouTube views freeze at 301?

RFlagg says...

I've always understood this part, what doesn't make sense is the resolution jumps are inconsistent and they don't make an option to set which "HD" or "SD" version I want. Most videos seem to start at 360 and jump to 480 once I go full screen. This is fine, though I would rather it start at 480 when available. Then sometimes it jumps to 720, which is less fine on my crappy DSL, but on occasion it hums along so it is nice to watch it there when it is streaming okay. It would be nice if instead of an "always play in SD" option, but to set which resolution we want as a default for both normal and full screen viewing, then let me manually change it if I decide I have the bandwidth to go more.... that and some videos go back to playing a commercial when when you drop out of full screen which is aggravating and I think it relates to the resolution changes...

NCIS- The ultimate slap in the face for computer geeks

Honestly, there's just.. there's just so much wrong here..

and I mean, honestly.. number one, what the hell is a work PC of that magnitude doing being hooked up to the internet... and two, why wouldn't either of them just think to pull out the wireless / ethernet / dsl cable?
That's the first goddamn thing I thought of. You've got a hacker? Kill your hardline.

You can't stop a port scan by disconnecting your router, even a rookie knows that. Once they've got your IP, it's only a matter of time before they get a lock on your mac address and then all your MBR files are fucked. Then they're gonna wipe all your minesweeper scores and you're fucked.

But what if the hacker is inside your internet?

Kevin O'Leary schooled regarding Canada metered internet

Krupo says...

>> ^Xax:

>> You can say, "Well take your business elsewhere then," but that's just it - there's nowhere else to take it to! If there were, Bell/Rogers would be fucked.
Canadian taxpayers pay/have paid for a large part of our telecom infrastructure, but Bell/Rogers get to make the rules and set the prices. It's a corrupt system.

I've placed my order - next week I'm switching to Youmano. Unlimited DSL! I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

$28.95, no contract. Yay?
