Why is that even a question?

cloudballoon says...

Singh's right. Spending money for Native to have potable water shouldn't even be a question. There's nothing more of a basic human right than having drinkable water, especially since they've suffered being under the broiling water advisory for YEARS.

However, the problem with the NDP is that everything involving doling out money on social programs is a priority. They, like the Greens, are perpetually lacking in presenting anything close to a sensible, financiable budget during elections. They don't even try. That's why the NDP was never a ruling party (at the federal level), just the occasional kingmaker.

Nut Milking EXPOSED!

The fog catcher who brings water to the poor - BBC News

Thanks

I expect the problem with drinking water is the cost of the required filters to make it drinkable, but as they said in the video even having non-drinkable water for their gardens is an improvement over not having it.

newtboy said:

I remember seeing a documentary about someone experimenting with fog collecting with netting in that area years and years ago. They have little rain, no lakes, but fog almost daily, so it seemed a perfect solution. I'm glad to see that it's being implemented, even if only on such a small scale.
It shouldn't take much to filter that water enough to drink it, then they would have (near) free water on tap instead of waiting for a water system that isn't coming.

Judge Dead, 2016 (RIP(?) Antonin Scalia dead at 79)

newtboy says...

Sadly, I expect the Republicans will agree with Cruz and block ANY nominee Obama puts forth in the hope that they will retain control of the legislative, and grasp control of both the executive and judicial in one stroke.
His passing (and likely not being replaced) should have every single American itching to get to the voting booth. This election just got even MORE consequential for the direction our country goes from here...and I didn't think that was possible.

Women, minorities, individual voters, and those who like drinkable water and breathable air should all rejoice. This single man has held our country back from advancements (social, political, or ecological) more than any other individual person in history. He's the one responsible for the legal concept of 'corporate personhood' and passing 'citizens united' which took our broken political system and repeatedly smashed it in the teeth with a sledgehammer.
Good riddance in my opinion, I'm not the least bit sad about his death, but I am a bit worried what might happen from here.
*promote a possible glimmer of hope that our country might course correct now....it's a dim glimmer, but more 'light' than we've had for quite a while now.

Cruz has already tweeted that America owes it to Scalia for his replacement to be appointed by the next President. So I guess he'd rather have that appointment made by Bernie.

The Drinkable Book

The Drinkable Book

So in other words the well documented anti bacterial properties of silver which people don't use because medical doses may turn your skin blue for the rest of your life are now being applied to sewage water filled with dissolved nasty solids which won't be removed by the silver therefore making the water drinkable...

Monsanto man claims it's safe to drink, refuses a glass.

poolcleaner says...

Dirt is safe enough to eat. Does that mean I have to eat a handful of dirt? It's weed killer, guys. But, yeah, don't claim it's so casually drinkable if you aren't willing to casually drink it.

It's a video with 2 jerks being played to a choir full of jerks. A circle jerk, in fact.

Monsanto man claims it's safe to drink, refuses a glass.

newtboy says...

First, even you said it's normally properly used at up to 10% concentration. Most people use it at the maximum concentration so it works effectively. 1% concentration almost never does the job....often 10% requires repeated applications, I know from experience.

Second, where does the interviewer EVER say it's PURE roundup in the glass? Where does the interviewee ever question the concentration level, or say "it is dangerous at full concentration"?...he doesn't, he said it's not harmful and I'll be glad to drink it. Period. he actually said, talking about PURE glyphosate "You can drink a whole quart of it and it won't hurt you"...and 'I'd be glad to drink it...not really'....Not 'it's not harmful when diluted to 1%', not 'it's not harmful when used correctly with proper safety gear', but blanket 'it's not harmful, you can drink it', which is obviously a lie. At anywhere near full concentration, it's deadly, and even at full maximum dilution, it's harmful to ingest and studies seem to indicate it causes cancer and other problems...which is why he won't drink it like he claimed he would.

You said vinegar, not pure acid. Pure concentrated acetic acid is not the same thing, but diluted to normally found full concentrations it's completely harmless, unlike roundup. Pure water is deadly, but not something you can find, just like pure acetic acid is something you can't find...but pure roundup is how they sell it, and how many (idiots) use it. That makes it a totally FAIR comparison, especially when the spokesman is telling you clearly that the pure chemical is completely harmless and drinkable (only commenters have brought up concentration levels, not the spokesman, he just said "not harmful, drinkable").

bcglorf said:

When talking about round-up, your audience is supposedly people that might actually use it. NOBODY uses it at 100% concentration unless they are the type to go home and heat their house with a fireplace full of money too. Round-up in most situations is terrifically effective against plants at less than 1% concentration. When you talk about round up and the associated risks, your talking about what is expected to be sitting in the tank of the sprayer.

The vinegar example is one you've used to nicely illustrate my point. Vinegar is nothing more than diluted acetic acid. In common language nobody talks about the hazards of vinegar being the same as those of concentrated acetic acid. Concentrated acetic acid though is not something you want on your skin or anywhere near your mouth. The whole point of my making such an unfair comparison is to illustrate that the same is true of round-up. In common usage, nobody's sprayer tank that they take into a field is gonna be anywhere close to 100% concentrated, it's gonna be much, much closer to 1%. That makes a difference, and glossing over that is also dishonest.

Why British Homes Don't Have Mix-Type Faucets

SquidCap says...

TL:RD: Flush mix tap for few seconds after not being used for hours. Count to three.

I would say that it is still advisable to flush out the stagnant water from pipes before drinking the water. Not a lot, until you feel the temperature to change. Reason is that while the warm water is now sanitary, it is still warm. Warm stagnant water goes bad pretty quickly, the pipes are NOT clean on the inside. If you have ever seen water mains pipes, you would probably boil your water, brit filter it and most likely perform an exorcision. It's bad, it is really really bad.. The main reason why the water stays drinkable is movement. Moving water is safe, the bacteria that lives on moving water is mostly harmless to us. But 15C to 22C is called "the death zone"; bacteria that thrives on moist conditions, between those temps is the most deadly we can find. E.Coli, Botulinum etc. all explode with those condition. So you take warm water to wash up that last tea, it stays in the pipes and you get a nice shot of bacteria first thing in the morning. Or you keep the tap on for ten seconds, flush out the main colony and then drink a fresh cold water; i'm sure this little trick will add years in to your life (just the fresh glass of water and the feeling we get from that should do the trick..)

But the days of flushing the whole length of pipe several times a day is unnecessary. Only important when it has sit for hours after running hot water thru that particular piece of pipe, maybe just few meters or few seconds. And even then most likely it's 100% safe but the gunk that sits in the pipes is DIRTY.. ffs, we got some wooden main lines still in use in the old town (built around circa 1600).. BTW, the water from those wooden pipes.. excellent, specially in the winter as it is just super cold, totally clear of all bacteria, it's like spring water. But that is mostly because they have been in use for hundreds of year, all the time with moving, cold, clean water running thru them. It's bacterial colonies work with us cleaning it.

Compare that to the other pipe system running thru our homes here: the main heating water that heats our homes, that water is so toxic that every cut you have while working with them, just a drop and you will get infected. It takes minutes and the cut will swell up. And the only really difference is that the heating system is on closed loop, with warm water and it sits for half a year stagnated.. It is still "clean" water, looks clean, doesn't smell. But that stuff is equal to biological warfare..

Why i know this? Well, i'm ex-junkie. Knowing what kind of water you inject to your veins is pretty fucking important if you wanna stay alive.

What Your Favorite Cocktail Says About You

chingalera says...

Invented one by accident last week-I hate most rum, most hard alcohol really, and a friend brought over a bottle of the nastiest blended rum I have ever tasted, Kraken (great bottle, horrible rum). Here's the recipe:

1-2 oz Nasty, un-sippable Rum
2 oz Coco-Loco (had some in the fridge from the last time someone made a Daiquiri here
4 oz fresh-squeezed Ruby Red Grapefruit juice

Mix rum and Coco Loco together, dissolving the gooey loco with rum into a solution
Add ice and grapefruit juice, stir

VERY drinkable and refreshing,
