A Scary Time

bobknight33 says...

I like being at this place also, even though I am out numbered 5000:1 That's Ok. It my choice. I like @Newboy the best. He to is unswayable.

Does a vote come with obligatory reason?

I do not think it is a great song. Catchy yes, great no.

I do not need to by into the Men are pigs, bastards, slime, evil.

Men are men. We like beer, We like women. Some men go to far but most don't.

Some women go to far also. Most don't. Where is this catchy song?

So No I do not by into this political crap just because it's the in thing to do. This scale is tipping too far.

Society is full of opposites. Opinions and viewpoints is part of this.

If the girl was ugly would this even be posted or listen to, or given the time of day? Fair question. Would @RFlagg even watched it or hence post it? Maybe Maybe not but having a pretty woman playing a catchy song sure helps get looks and votes. Apparently it got your up and my down and so far 91 views on the sift.

In you honor I gave it an upvote.

@bobknight33 can you explain why you downvoted this comment? Do you find it inappropriate or irrelevant? I certainly don't, and probably would have promoted the song myself.

Believe it or not, I personally actually like having you around on the sift, both for your non-political videos and for your political comments (although I think I've yet to be swayed by any of your arguments and I'm an ocean away in any case). I don't want to see you banned for abusing downvotes, but it's a serious dick move. I know it's tough but I suggest you keep pleading your case rather than trying to punish or silence others.

The Adpocalypse: What it Means

jimnms says...

Sorry in advance, I just had to rant about ads while they were on my mind.

I don't mind ads, if it's a good ad. Keep it simple and short, like: This is our product, this is what it does, here are some uses you could have for it, thank you for your time. I hate ads that try to be catchy, clever, or seem targeted at idiots. They basically follow the opposite formula for what I consider a good ad above. They start off by telling you that you have a problem, why you have the problem (your an idiot) and then tell you that have to buy their product to fix your problem, and usually go on way too long.

There are too few good ads, so I just don't watch ads anymore, anywhere. Advertisers have brought this on themselves. I don't watch much TV anymore, but for the few things I do still watch, I record on my DVR and skip ads. I use an ad blocker on my browser, but I will white list sites that I regularly visit if the ads are reasonable.

I don't mind paying a reasonable fee for ad-free content. I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon video (but fucking Amazon is now putting ads in for their own shit). I have a one-disk subscription with my Netflix account, but I'm only watching about one movie a month. I used to watch the trailers once so I could see if there are any up-coming movies I might want to see, but movie trailers are becoming too damn long now. And fuck you if you make your ads unskipable on the disk, I won't watch them out of principle. I've gotten to the point now where I just put the disk in 10 minutes or so before I'm ready to watch it, leave the sound muted and when I come back with my popcorn and beer the movie is ready to watch.

Japan Does Computer Commercials Better

It's not just Autotune - how singers cheat today(Pop Theory)

Sagemind says...

I was with him for the first part.
And it's not that I can't take him seriously because of his hair - I found it very distracting to take singing critique from a Bieber look-alike...
He lost me when he says, "Even though your favorite artists probably cheats a bit in the studio, try to remember that tracks that you love by them might not have existed without this technology speeding up their workflow."

First, I think people like T-pain, Kanye, and Drake are most of what is wrong with the music industry today. So they definitely are NOT my favorite artists. Honestly, I refuse to call them artists. Artists hone their skills through tireless hours, years and dedication. Something these people don't do. (Hence the need for Autotune)

His point is exactly the point. Without Auto-tune, we wouldn't have these songs because they are utter garbage. It's Auto-tune that is the star, not the personas "behind the curtain."

And also, there is no fast track to learning skills. Yes, as he states, "speeding up their workflow" is just that. Workflow. This means it helps them produce tons of this crap without ever improving their skills, because they don't need to. They just need to rapidly produce song after song, while waiting for the one that is the most catchy to stick in people's minds. Then the conglomerate of industry leaches will pick it it up in hopes they all generate a few bucks from it. Meaning, they get radio play for producing crap song, after crap song.

Sorry to rant here, but pick up an instrument, learn to play. Learn how to sing, learn to hit a note. Entrance us with your skills and abilities. Seduce us with abilities that impress us. Gain our respect with your talents.

The guy in this video is just as fake as a Bieber look-alike, and while he starts to point out that they are3 cheating, he ends by enabling them showing us how great Lois's recorded voice sounds like once Frankensteined. This is not okay.

Note: I'm posting this comment to the YouTube video as well

Welding in Space

oritteropo says...

That is actually what this video is about: how people thought cold welding was a problem in space but it turns out it hardly ever is. That wouldn't make a terribly catchy title though.

A few more references would've been nice.

I expect more nuanced explanations and information from this guy, so maybe I was just not expecting his little switcheroo on the initial story.

It's not that I'm doubting the reality of this in the least, but I'd really like to hear about the experiments where they tested and confirmed this phenomenon. I guess I expect science to be supported by facts.

I get sick of the "We found this principle out. Isn't that neat? Just take our word for it." It wasn't that long ago where we said "Today we understand that Dinosaurs are giant, scaly ancestors of reptiles".
We're never approaching things with "All the evidence we've discovered suggests this to be the case about 'X'", which is absolutely the way we need to address all knowledge, because we're constantly proving old findings wrong and that's a good thing for improving our understanding of the universe. This tone is present throughout today's science as well, and grates on me every time I hear it. History has shown us enough that we will eventually prove it wrong, so I wish we presented findings that way to begin with.

*promote A banner day for THE most diligent and deserving Sifter on the entire site! Thank you @eric3579 for all you've done for me personally over my time here. I most certainly wouldn't have lasted past the first few tumultuous, trial by fire, weeks without your kindness and support. The fact that you continue to play a big part in my enjoyment is much appreciated and loved. Just like YOU my friend

Astoundingly catchy song parody @dag ... an earworm for sure. Certainly Tommy Heath would be flattered. And the Chris Murphy badge, as always, is to die for!

Corey Feldman's Crazy Today Show Performance

Sagemind says...

I like him.. I like what he's trying to do.
I think he should have closer friends to bounce ideas off of.
I think he needs a better manager, unless he's managing himself, then get one.

He took a chance, and I admire him for it. We all need to fail sometimes. I do however, feel like they were setting him up to fail. Never should an artist have to interview and defend their work before they've even performed - I really don't know what that was all about - he was on the defensive before he even started.

I really saw this as an artistic performance piece. The song had catchy parts but was missing the glam. The sound quality was poor. Like I said - Better management, maybe a little less Retro-MJ look.

Great name, but is his theme song going to be as catchy as Spider Pig?

I know about Aquaman....but Aquaham? That's a new one for me.
Clearly the people in the green and yellow enclosure were working for the Legion of Doom, and Aquaham was simply disrupting their evil plans.
