Compensatory damages can be discharged in bankruptcy, which Jones clearly plans to avoid payment, but punitive damages cannot, so the $45 million debt will stick with him for life.

Edit: Er Mer Gerd! Jones’s lawyers tanked his case by sending the prosecution every byte of data in his phone by accident, proving conclusively that Jones lied on the stand multiple times…but this is data the FBI and Jan 6 committee requested and was not supplied (likely he told them it had been erased like most of Trump’s cabinet’s phones, his secret service detail’s phones, and Trump’s own phones). Now they’re going to get it from the families of Sandy Hook victims Jones disgustingly harassed and slandered for years.
Jones was definitely involved at a high level and had conversations with others involved at high levels.
They say karma is a bitch…I hope this time she’s a pit Bull with bloodlust.

It would require a fairly intensive refactor to get it to work. The hardest part would be figuring out how to shoehorn GOTO into a modern BASIC interpreter since that command was taken out back and shot in the head -- and for good reason -- but with the memory and processor restrictions of computers at the time, GOTO was necessary because GOSUB required 4 bytes of stored information and a bit more processing power. There's also a number of functions that are exclusive to TRS-DOS BASIC and the Model III in particular.

At one point, I thought about moving the code from BASIC to Z-80 Assembler, but by then the first PC Jr. clones were out (I had a TRS Model 1000 and it was GREAT!) and it no longer made sense to continue doing anything on the Model III.

The worst loss is the database data, which was all the room and pathing descriptions, as well as part of the warm storage for the games. That's the part that breaks my heart to have lost.

That said, the sound over an acoustic coupler of an analog modem making a 300 bps connection is still makes me smile.

BTW, the parkland shooter used 10rnd low capacity magazines. Looks like banning 30rnds won't do much good at all, but that's just common sense.

This gun control hysteria is the Republicans' best shot of retaining control of the house and senate. Just look at '94 when they swept into power after the clinton assault weapon ban.

It does have to do with writing code.

I have to deal with a source code repository that's full of tabs at work every day. Indentation for code may be composed of spaces and tabs, or spaces only. If tabs are present, then everyone working with the code has to use the same tab width setting, otherwise the indentation will be fubar.

If two people save edits using a different tab width setting, then there really is no way of fixing it up beyond auto-indenting it all and saving with a consistent tab setting.

The advantage of tabs is saving a few bytes on file size, which is completely undetectable in today's world of html email and xml everything.

The film, however, makes no sense, because the only way you can find out about a fundamental disagreement on spaces v tabs is by opening someone else's file in your editor, and finding the indentation all messed up. It's not something you can tell by looking over a shoulder.

The difference between emacs and vi, by the way, is that emacs has several good vi emulations, but it would be laughable to think of an emacs emulation in vi.

Emacs used to seem a completely outsized pig of a program, but in our modern times it's actually tiny. Still, you would expect a vi-champion to want tabs instead of spaces, not vice versa.

Not a lot of understanding displayed here, I'm afraid.

Most QR reading apps show you the URL or other QR code contents before doing anything with it. They don't just go to the URL automatically unless you tell it to do so (none that I've used anyway). I'm assuming if there were a program for desktop/laptop PCs that reads QR codes, it would behave similarly. Standard QR codes can't really contain anything other than text data, because they are extremely limited in the number of bytes they can represent. Generally, they're used to store a website URL or similar type of thing.

I've never heard of a web-based attack that would automatically infect you. There would be some sort of confirmation or you'd need to run some piece of software manually in order to get infected. JavaScript doesn't have the ability to actually break out of the browser, so there's nothing it could really do at a system level. If it downloaded software, you would need to let it install before there was any risk.

I've heard of screensavers, back in the like, Windows 95/98 days, where if you used it, you could become infected. But that's no different. Screensavers (at least back then) were nothing more than specialized .exe files, so you're just running a program like any other thing.

If you're dumb enough to click a link and then install the software it downloads, then you're not exercising proper basic security principles and you kind of deserve to learn a lesson anyway.

I just assumed that phones are nearly as vulnerable as computers, and I know that just opening a web page CAN infect your system, even with anti-virus software and without clicking/intentionally installing anything. Some viruses auto-download once you're on the site with no notice, or a fake notice pretending to be a 'I've read the terms of service' or 'I agree' boxes and downloading to hidden files in the background in ways only IT specialists would notice.
I know that I've seen many reports claiming that many 'fremium' games include Trojan horse programs that track your phone usage, location, and in some cases steal your information. I'm just guessing that the same thing is possible without the game attached. It wouldn't be difficult on a PC to use a link/web page to auto-infect visitors, I'm just guessing the same goes for 'hand held computers'.

I think "literally zero risk" is a bit much. Possibly extremely unlikely, but certainly not really zero risk.

These videos are pretty stupid. Geography is largely irrelevant to most people's lives and therefore qualifies as trivia. It's like asking someone how many bytes are in a kilobyte or how many bits are in a byte except that's actually relevant since knowing those things will help you see past the marketing BS of ISPs and hard drive makers.

Different people know different things and someone isn't automatically "stupid" because they don't know random facts that serve no purpose in their occupations or daily lives.

Exactly. Even though the sound byte sounds stupid at first, the only reason you would have an unloaded gun in a holster is if you had bullets in your pocket. Sure it takes a few seconds to load them, but you're still pretty damn dangerous walking around that way.

A Short History Of The GIF

Some very old (and stripped down) notes I have, from a beginners course I used to teach on web graphics and image formats. (it does loose a little something in translation with the limited formatting we can use here).

GIF: (Graphics Interchange Format)
Limited to 256 colors and less.
Recommended - 72 dpi.
8-bit color planes


Originally designed by Compuserve. June 1987

It used a compression scheme called LZW.
Gif utilizes a compression method which uses a particular algorithm. This algorithm is copyrighted by Unisys. Any software which supports the format must obtain the rights to use the format but all users are free to use it.
Because of this issue..., a new format called PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is slowly infiltrating, and is expected to eventually replace the GIF.


How it compresses...


  1. It compresses repeated patterns of pixels in an image.
  2. The more repeated patterns there are in an image, the more it can be compressed. When the image is decompressed it is
    exactly the same as the original image.
  3. Example:

    If the code looks like this - (@ 42-bytes)

    The conversion looks for repeating strings of more than 3 numbers -

    It then replaces the strings with a "token". It refers to which number it repeats and for how many characters -
    1 5 6 4 6 7 9 1 2 5 6 9 8 4 5 8 9 [9,5] 5 6 7 [9,4] 6 [1,7] 7 8 [9,3]

  4. Each "token" takes 2 bytes. having eliminated several repeating characters, our code is now only 31-bytes


Points to note:

  • GIF uses Lossless, Pattern Matching Compression
  • It compresses repeated patterns of pixels in an image.
  • The more repeated patterns there are in an image, the more it can be compressed.
  • When the image is decompressed it is exactly the same as the original image


Summary:
When you convert images to the GIF format you first must reduce the number of colors to 256 or less, (this process looses information). The fewer the colors, the smaller the file. But when the image is compressed, no image detail is lost.
