Good question, BSR.

I wasn't a Christian until I'm in my 30's. But throughout my 20's, I occasionally get asked if I'm a Christian whenever I was just being nice/helping people. So after a dozen times getting asked that, I went to a church event from a Christian friend and got involved. I only wanted to get baptized after I read the whole Bible cover-to-cover.

I really don't get attached to the church much, although I do go every Sunday & have fellowship 3, 4 times a month. Not getting attached in the sense that knowing church is like any organization with lots of people - it's natural their hearts & minds tends to go to the daily running of the church (Getting more people into church, donations vs expenses, etc.) and communal/social side of things more than the spiritual-growth side.

I'm more of a "Jesus Follower" type of Christian I guess? not impressed with organized religion, but I just agree and put myself into practicing what Jesus preach to people, his simple commandments: Love God & my neighbors. Looking at Jesus as a humanitarian philosopher perspective, I can't believe He doesn't want us to make this Earth a better place. He's all about understanding, accepting and instill love & respect into everyone...

It's crazy to see people using and twisting religion to turn this world into - pardon my French - merde... how is this what Jesus wants? There are way too many people who just want the benefit (getting into heaven? bragging right? think Christianity is superior than others?) without the effort... these we call the "free-gift (read: cheap-fakes) gospel" that really have zero value and zero contribution to the betterment of the world.

You said it right. Jesus placed the world on his shoulder, if I call myself a Christian and I don't carry the cross as He does... I'm just lying to myself and to the world.

That's How A Real Driver Backs Up His Trailer!

MilkmanDan says...

I drove a semi sometimes for a couple years for my family farm. Didn't drive a whole lot, and pretty much all on back dirt roads and in lots/fields, to get some experience before possibly getting a CDL. Never ended up getting the CDL because I moved and changed jobs. I was around and learned from skilled drivers (my dad for one), so I know a little bit, but I'm certainly no expert. That being said:

Backing up a vehicle with a trailer is quite difficult because compared to a normal vehicle with no trailer, all your intuition is wrong and little mistakes get amplified quickly.

Backing up a car and want your tail end to go right? Turn the wheel right. Want the same thing to happen in a semi with a trailer? First turn the wheel left while you back up, which will push the tail end of your tractor left, causing a reaction like pressing on a lever that pushes the tail end of the trailer right. But don't overdo it, because that same lever-type action causes more movement the further you get away from the fulcrum point, so a tiny move there can result in a BIG swing.

Complicating that, you have no central rear view mirror. Side mirrors work, but distance can be obscured by the huge trailer very quickly.

Basically, backing up is one of the most daunting things about learning to drive a truck, particularly for people new to it. The "pull ups" he mentioned are the best way to overcome that. Pulling forward a short/medium distance gets the tractor and trailer back into alignment, so that straight back should result in the trailer going straight back. From that point, you can try to make small corrections. If it starts to swing a lot, pull up again and straighten out, lather rinse repeat.

The guy in the video does a good job (way better than I could do), but he seems to think he's the shit. I don't think you earn real trucking community bragging rights until you can reverse double trailers, or even triples if you want to be worshiped as a god.

Here's a video with doubles:

One of the full-timers on my family farm was quite good with doubles. Not "obstacle course" good, but I saw him reverse a slow circle around a grain bin. And he liked to tell stories about a some semi-mythical whiz guy that could reverse triples around a corner, etc.

There's no reason to go sub except to avoid detection - not much you can see below snorkel depth really so I don't see the point... definite bragging rights, but the novelty would wear off after the first trip.

I think people who hunt for machismo and bragging rights are a bit primitive, but I can still understand where @shang is coming from. Of course there's a thrill to the hunt; it's a challenge, a competition. Just because someone enjoys that thrill doesn't make them a sociopath.

My dad used to hunt when I was little, but he very rarely got anything. Years later he told me he started hunting because it was a way to spend time with his father, but he never really enjoyed shooting animals. At one point he had sat down against a tree to have lunch and a deer snuck up on him while he was eating. He gave her a piece of his sandwich and pet her for a few minutes while she ate it and then she wandered off.

After that, he stopped carrying a gun into the woods and started carrying a camera. From then on he was taking a different kind of shot, but the thrill of the hunt was still there.

They seemed to be pretty nice to the bird except for catching it of course. We kill millions of animals each day including a lot for bragging rights. This bird escaped unharmed except being afraid.

2 girls impress guys by shaking their asses wildly

Fusionaut says...

Let us weigh the merits of this video. This video is all about two girls dancing. The dance is a style that you would obviously find in a dance club. The style is boring as hell to watch yet it would take practice and dedication to master. (if you would argue otherwise, just give it a try! ). Although this dance is of a sexual nature I do not find it sexy at all but sexiness is in the eye of the beholder, or whatever other organ it may be in. Because of this I submit that these girls made this video to document and showcase their boring as hell yet difficult dance skills, possibly for bragging rights. I find it no more shocking than old videos of Elvis 'gyrating' back in the day. Also, I am sure that "AZZ DANCE" practitioners and connoisseurs would appreciate this video in the same way that fly fishers like watching videos of people fly fishing.

Another component of this video is the text bubbles that pop up. They seem to me to be mocking the video itself and poking fun at the dance. This is why I upvoted since it made me laugh. Fuk dem soks lol.

These girls have the resources to film themselves, the freedom to dance in any way they choose, the ability to publicize their dance so that people from all over the world can discuss the "redeeming value" of it all, and above all they have freedom of expression through dance. That is why you should upvote this video and that is why I'm going to give it a *quality. Censorship be damned!

Acute Dupitis (Sift Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

@xxovercastxx Red menace! I'm here entirely for the bragging rights, showing good videos is a byproduct of that. After I've gotten my crown, there isn't much more to gain, so now I sift more rarely and just things I like myself. There is to little systematic focus on "look what I did". If the sift promoted that more, like games do, like reddit does, like many other places do, then it would get bigger. I'm certain of it. We need more competition and we need more reward, it will cause growth and it will better the sift for all of us! I'm a single blue fish in an otherwise red sea, ach!

If you don't like that argument, and you're a commie, then you might appreciate that there is a pragmatic element to not having videos not be linked to dead users, in that live users actually go around and fix their videos when they go dead. Furthermore, if the point of sifting is to show videos to more people, then we should be able to repost as much as we like - dupeing only takes the video away from views, especially if it's to an old post - then the video vanishes for people who don't know what to look for.

@BoneRemake over the years a lot of unwritten rules have sprung up from discussions

for instance:
* It used to be that if any video that wholly contained another newer video, then the newer video was considered a dupe - that's not changed to include that if it's "significantly different" then it's not a dupe. That's a big grey area right there.

* If an original video is long and the newer video is not, then - within reason - you should not dupe it, because the newer is likely significantly different in that it focuses on a single event or small part of the other video

* if the newer video is posted by me, then I kill you!

* If a video is discarded, you can bring it back with promote, this is a bad thing, since it fucks around with dupes - while the video was discarded, it was "legal" to post the video again and fair game. But if you promote the old one, then suddenly there's an older version lying around - in that case the old version is actually killed and the newer stands.

@blankfist:
It's simple:
more views = good
more votes = good
dupeof -> no more views, no more votes ->bad
dupeof -> clean up sift -> good
dupeof = bad+good

I'm sure you get my point, but just to spell it out, the video loses by being dupeofed quickly, because it does not get exposure - this is more relevant with old posts, like the one referenced earlier, because a lot of younger sifters might not have seen it at all - a promote does not do the same as just letting this one ride the wave of votes and then dupe it afterwards. Viewer win, the original poster wins, the new poster wins (top 15/1 achievement) and who loses?

A little more info. Interesting that they share all the fish and then divide them.

I wouldn't believe that. Why hold a FFA that is clearly competitive just to split it up? I have a feeling a few may share but a lot probably don't.

Also, I'm not sure if this is stated anywhere but I am pretty sure they do this so that the fish aren't wasted once the "lake" dries up. Pretty good idea, really.

1. It's exciting and fun. 2. There's bragging rights in catching the most fish to hand over to the elder, even if you don't get to om'nom every fishy yourself.

Ralph Nader on Education

GeeSussFreeK says...

>> ^uzema:
Nice rhyming there Nader but i thought that education was one of the few things left up to the states and the president has little bearing on what goes on within our school districts.

Even with state control, education systems have been more and more laden with heavy regulation and standardization. There are many times of the year in many grades where teachers have to drop their lesson plans just to get students ready for the "mega standardized test to determine if your school gets more funding or not" tests. Here in Texas that was the case, I know it is getting that bad in other states as well.

These tests don't help children or teachers for the most part, they just go to falsely gauge the success of different school systems against others for the bragging rights of certain Politicians and government bureaucracies. I can name teachers and people in my life that have made a real difference in my life, but they never administered a multiple choice test to size me up and point me in the right direction.

Standardized testing is teh sux as far as I am concerned, at least, for the types of tests that are given out today.

I'm guessing it's some sort of bragging rights. Like a, "I don't care about my job or constituents, so I've been here napping for the last 9 hours" sort of thing. That or he's older than the fucking Crypt Keeper and needs to get dinner at 4:00PM.
