5 Crises Republicans Made up to Distract You

bcglorf says...

I feel like this video is deeply guilty of being exactly what it is warning against. The criticisms are all inarguably valid, but as much as the GOP is particularly egregious right now, they aren't the only ones using cheap distractions.

More importantly, the video itself is very much MSNBC's favorite brand of the exact same distract your base approach. The video itself is focused on how wrong the GOP is for focusing on these none issues. It's still lasering focus on the non-issues.

Reminding your base why you need to hate and fear the 'other' is the bread and butter distraction approach both FOX and MSNBC are using to poison the nation. BOTH of them are happily embracing the narratives on fake crises and attempting to ensure attention is dominated by them. When one side picks up a new outrage for their base to focus on, the other side happily joins in to be outraged by the outrage.

Let's pretend your house is on fire. Your friend with a red shirt thinks you should throw gas on it, and your blue shirt friend points out that diesel is better because it's less flammable. This video is a guy explaining at length why tossing gas on is a bad idea, and don't listen to red shirt guy. It's a waste of time to entertain either of them though, what you really need to do is find people willing to help fight the fire. 99% of politicians(red or blue) are not your allies here.

Ameca and the most realistic AI robots. Beyond Atlas.

spawnflagger says...

I agree with newtboy - Elon has a lot of bad ideas. (most of which are debunked with high school physics - see the many Thunderf00t videos). But there's a lot of smart people working at Tesla and SpaceX who are actually doing a bulk of the work & innovation.

But, this video isn't about Musk, it's about Robots and AI. Many more examples and companies than just Tesla-bot.

Don't worry though, humanity will be 'saved' from the robots by a large coronal mass ejection event that fries the grid and most computers on Earth.

DOPESICK Official Trailer (2021)

luxintenebris jokingly says...

looks like a great movie that might not want to see. having been exposed to this subject matter - hats off to John Oliver btw - it just might bring up the past seething rage again. at least, won't have to fear spoilers.

Pandora's box opened with direct-to-consumer marketing. held it a very bad idea then, and find this - and the Sackler family - a direct result of that bad idea. recall the "Cassandra's" at the time telling that this would - and did - happen. along the same lines when the S&Ls went down. faulty ideology, clear warnings ignored, and what was said to happen, happened. the same folks are still following the same playbook today.

the AMA says it leads to higher drugs prices, EU voted it down for the same reason - using the U.S. as the example, and the operation data of pharmas prove that it is more about sales than safety or R&D. The cost is too high. In currency and lives.

[unless you're in EMT services, sell PDs Narcan, produce black tar, or rehab services - then it's job security]

but hope it's a massive hit.

do for the Sackler name what Stalin, Dahmer, or Manson did for their surname.

Shoplifting Running Rampant

eric3579 says...

Ugh, i just deleted 30 minutes of blah blah blah i had typed out. I just can't afford to get into. Having these back and forth type discussions just ramp up my anxiety I knew it was a bad idea to leave a comment. My bad. (and this is why i can't have nice things)

Still don't think the description holds water regarding that prop 47 is the implied cause for the situation.

Men For Total Equality

newtboy says...

My point exactly. Just like a remake of Little Women with all bros wouldn't be a good example of equality for men. It was an exercise in equality in one way, as an example of women's equal opportunities to fail at bad ideas, just like men.

Equality doesn't equate to sameness. That's called homogeneity. It's spelled and pronounced differently because they're different words and concepts.

It's not just a possibility, this is stupid and uninformed malice, this isn't fun, or just slightly malicious. This is he man women haters club INCEL propaganda.

So how far did making women ghostbusters get us, newt?

This is possibly stupid and uniformed fun, it might even be slightly malicious fun, but there is present an element of making fun of ideology that goes too far.

Yes.
Also a good idea to check that your safety rope is not on the wrong side of the cut....and not a bad idea to be sure your backup isn't directly below you.
The right failed on all counts and taped the throttle on their chainsaw fully open and pulled off the chain brake.
Right now I feel like they're hovering mid air like Wiley Coyote, holding a little sign saying "uh-oh".

Black face debate | It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

eric3579 says...

A black glove seems more appropriate (although no idea if somehow it would be a bad idea) than a painted arm/hand, but still seems unnecessary as there are so many other ways of being supportive. Imo, It all seems very look at me, but context is everything.

The black fist has a historical significance I'm not sure a white fist conveys, but I do see the likelihood any attempted solidarity would be overshadowed by people's outrage at perceived racial appropriation.

Colorado Blizzard Aftermath - Woodmen Road Dashcam Footage

eric3579 says...

You are not even trying Need that scene when a car is driving on a roadway littered with automobiles and no one to be seen. Like the sifted video but with no people on the road.

(edit) maybe it's a bad idea to post lots of videos in the comment thread. I always feel bad when a comment thread goes on about something not really related to the video posted.

My bad for asking, Sorry.

Bill And Ted 3: Face The Music - Announcement

Take care of the baby

Can I have my rims back?

bcglorf says...

Mostly the trouble depends on where you work and how publicly you make your statement. I'd mostly get called a racist, but working for a partially publicly funded place if I was vocal enough losing your job or being told to apologise and be quiet are real possibilities.

The not allowed to talk about it applies much more heavily to anyone in the media. A recent example would be an aboriginal man that was recently shot by a white farmer. The narrative on the national CBC media made a big deal about rampant racism in the region against aboriginals. In their coverage of local opinion it was even more one sided, as they described two sides, the grieving family of the deceased and their supporters, and then the racists who sided with the farmer because they hated aboriginal people. They very slowly, reluctantly and buried deep under a lot of disclaimers released more information on the case.

The young man that was killed was in a truck with 4 of his friends, and their story was that they got a flat tire and pulled into the yard to seek help with repairs. The CBC ran that much right away. They were much more reluctant to include that the RCMP had been called BEFORE the truck got onto that farm because they had been trying to steal a truck from a neighbouring farm already beforehand. It wasn't until during the trial that even more came out, and CBC again reluctantly included details from the friends that where with the victim. All the occupants of the vehicle had been drinking very heavily all afternoon. They admitted to 'checking cars' at the earlier neighbouring farm. They admitted to using the butt end of a rifle to try and break the windows of the truck at the neighbouring farm, but the stock broke off the gun. It was found at the neighbouring farm by police. Upon arriving at the final farm, they admitted trying to start up an ATV and going through and unlocked vehicle there as well, but disagreed on who was doing which. The trial even included text messages from the night before wondering if one of the friends would be able to "go on missions" tomorrow because they were hiding from police after a liquor store robbery. The farmer also mentioned being scared about what could happen the day of the shooting because he thought back to a story he'd been told about 2 farmers being killed on their yards a few years before he'd moved into the area. Only 1 media outlet in the country, and in 1 article checked out that the identity of one of those killers back then turned out to be the victims uncle. I had to go back looking for the original article from when those murders took place to be sure that the current news article wasn't just sensationalising things.

Now of course none of that means you want to see somebody getting killed over property theft. None of that means racism in any way shape or form is justified. However, when there was a rampant run of rural crime across the area and farmers were getting more and more fed up and nervous about their safety something bad was eventually going to happen. It's a tragedy, but our media was absolutely terrified of covering the full story because listing the facts I just laid out is considered racist. Your blaming the victim. My listing of the above facts is not supposed to be done without including many times more explanations and reasons that this was the white man's fault.

Ultimately, the absolute failure to talk openly about things in Canada is getting people killed. We absolutely need to be clear that stealing doesn't deserve a death penalty. We ALSO need to tell a group of young adults that were going farm to farm, with a loaded rifle, raging drunk, stealing and breaking into vehicles that doing that was a BAD idea and one of the reasons is that doing so might get you shot by someone that doesn't know if your going to hurt them or not. I really believe if the kids had been white that would have been the narrative, but because of race it wasn't. It just makes things worse and inspires more risky and dangerous decisions from people in the future and more people will continue to get hurt.

Fairbs said:

when you talk about getting in trouble, do you mean being called a racist and if not what kind of trouble?

I find it interesting that in the states, people often use an over represented prison population (relative to % of normal population) to indicate that 'those' people are bad. I think with yours and Drachen Jagers comments, you are actually coming from a place that is trying to find a solution to the discrepancy and looking at the underlying conditions that got people into where they are. I wish more people were like that. I also appreciate the insight into the Aboriginal population in Canada. It sounds pretty similar to what's going on in the States.

The Harms of Marijuana

MilkmanDan says...

Wow. Little to no evidence of smoked marijuana having any connection to lung or other cancers.

I must admit I'm surprised. To me it seems like burning something and inhaling the smoke is "obviously" a bad idea with regards to health.

Since the link between tobacco cigarettes and cancer is well established and agreed on by doctors, it makes one wonder what the difference is. Is it entirely the additives that cigarette manufacturers put into cigarettes? If so, why the hell wouldn't there be massive pressure to mass produce additive-free cigarettes at least as an option for smokers?

Also, I guess one (potential) downside of legalization is that the same sort of corporations that knowingly put cancer-causing shit into cigarettes might expand into marijuana territory, potentially trying to put crap into your pot that dispensaries and dealers never have.

Still, overall this is clearly good news for pot fans out there, and will put further pressure on the double standard between legal-but-far-more-dangerous alcohol and tobacco as compared to illegal-but-relatively-innocuous pot. Congratulations! Light one up in celebration (as if you needed a reason).

11 Year Old Naomi Wadler's Speech At The March for our Lives

newtboy says...

Sure, no problem...just a cut and paste. I still use the old version of VS, so the channel descriptions are easy to see for me.

I agree, the channel should be more clear since it's important on this one channel that inappropriate posts not get in, unlike any other channel. Maybe change it to Kid Friendly or For Kids at least, but I don't even know if the channel owner still moderates the channel. I think a separate submission flow might be hard to implement, but isn't a bad idea.

....But to be clear, that's not the issue here. This poster has had the channel descriptions posted to him dozens of times, including by our moderators, and continued to reassign his videos to kids (and war on terror) because he thinks they belong there, channel descriptions be damned.

Lets hope 2 hobbles in one day and being talked to by Lucky and Dag has some effect. I'm sick to death of removing adult topics from a channel I don't even visit, much less own, just because it needs doing....I don't even like kids, but I don't want to watch them be abused for some adult's political point either.

CrushBug said:

Thanks @newtboy for the clarifications.

I think the problem is that there is not a clear delineation between the 30 or so channels listed while submitting and the Kids one.

Maybe there should be a separate submission flow for Kids such that the channel owner/owners need to approve it. If it is supposed to be that restricted then it is far too easy to tag right now.
