Swamp Thing Teaser Trailer

RFlagg says...

I don't think this has anything to do with the Swamp Thing movie, but more the Alan Moore and forward era.

But yeah, Doom Patrol is the only other one that I'd really want to see there as Titans doesn't look worth while. This was a case, much like Stargate Universe, where partnering with an existing service would have made more sense. Perhaps with Disney pulling all the Marvel stuff to Disney+, and assuming DC Universe doesn't make enough, perhaps they'll partner with Netflix or something.

Watchmen - Adapting The Unadaptable

Mordhaus says...

I disagree that it cannot be adapted to film. It could be done with a director that can function in a storytelling environment, which Snyder simply cannot do. The problem with Snyder was covered very well here recently, *related=http://videosift.com/video/Nerdwriter-Fundamenal-Flaw-Zack-Snyder-Batman-v-Superman
He was exactly the wrong director to have film this. I would have went with Del Toro or Whedon, but even they have their flaws.

Now, if the question is, can an adaptation be done that Alan Moore will feel 'suits' his vision? Probably not. He is an artist, in very good ways, but also in some very bad ones. He has a specific idea of how his creation must flow, which means he will never be satisfied with a medium outside of the graphic novel or comic.

Personally, I think one of the few un-adaptable works would be Gaiman's Sandman, but that's just my opinion.

Agreed.

They managed to turn a treatise on Nietzsche's abyss and the nature of Anarchy & Fascism; into a one sided fairytale about extreme neo-conservatism vs pseudo-liberal collectivism.

& don't get me started on the fucking "eggy in a basket"!

V is supposed to be a god-damned monster, not a relatable hero.

Reading V after seeing this film was what made me truly understand why Alan Moore wants nothing to do with film adaptations.

what a painfully stupid scene.

The movie completely missed the point of its source material.

Jon Stewart's 19 Tough Questions for Libertarians!

@enoch, I feel I need to step in and clear out some of the crazy here. Instead of attacking any argument I've made above, notice how "Jigga" is still only attacking me personally. Then he even attacked Alan Moore instead of his political argument.

Jigga's excuse is because I compared myself to Thoreau over this comment. Go read it, please: http://videosift.com/talk/Gov-t-stopped-funding-charity-private-donations-surge-500#comment-1185054

Am I really "comparing" myself to Thoreau? Or comparing a common political position of anarchism? I just like how Thoreau explained it. Better than I ever could.

@JiggaJonson, I think you're angry at me because I wasn't interested in the Muppet Baby idea you pitched to me. No need to leave weird profile messages trying to provoke me into an argument. Not everyone is meant to work together creatively. I have no hard feelings toward you. Let's all just move on and forgive. Cool?

@JiggaJonson, you're not very good at trolling. But I like that you're putting in the effort. A solid C+.

Honestly though, I believe there's a flaw in your premise. Whether or not someone engages in every form of civil disobedience is irrelevant to their convictions or dedication to a movement. Take Alan Moore for instance. Outspoken Anarchist. Believed government should be nothing more than an administrative role at best. Big supporters of the Occupy movement. The man behind the Guy Fawkes mask. Yet wrote some of his best work for major corporations. And pays taxes.

Voluntaryism

blankfist says...

@ChaosEngine, I don't think you can assert that it's a "fact that history has shown us that people, when left to their own devices, are absolute assholes to their fellow man." People are generally good, I find.

And what problems exactly would you like to see libertarians actually address that they haven't already? And statism is the "dominant" model because it derives its powers by force. It wouldn't be dominant if it didn't force itself on the people.

I think Alan Moore has a decent take on this, too. From his wikipage: "I believe that all other political states are in fact variations or outgrowths of a basic state of anarchy; after all, when you mention the idea of anarchy to most people they will tell you what a bad idea it is because the biggest gang would just take over. Which is pretty much how I see contemporary society. We live in a badly developed anarchist situation in which the biggest gang has taken over and have declared that it is not an anarchist situation – that it is a capitalist or a communist situation. But I tend to think that anarchy is the most natural form of politics for a human being to actually practice."

Richard Dawkins & Ricky Gervais on Religion

kymbos says...

I wasn't tricked - I didn't watch it. I saw the title, clicked on the link, then in an opportunity to draw attention to myself, wrote a comment. I'm not watching 15 more minutes of these even bigger attention whores bang on.

Now, Alan Moore and Stewart Lee? Well, I could listen to those nice chaps all day.

HARDtalk - Alan Moore

cosmovitelli says...

>> ^Sagemind:

There is something to be said for Anarchy. Not a pleasant world it would make, but some digression through anarchy would be progressive for government to be more productive and less corrupt.
Of course anarchy can bread its own corruption as well.

The real meaning of anarchy is what modern Americans would call libertarianism - did you watch the recent Chomsky vid on political semantics? Check out prince Peter kropotkin.

>> ^Porksandwich:

Dude hasn't seen V for vendetta......
I've always wondered about that, if they have to make sure not to watch other stuff covering their material so they don't get influenced by it.

The movies of vendetta and from hell are not even remotely worthy of the comics.
Although to really enjoy the comics you have to be a depressed young person in Thatchers Britain. Listening to 'a forest' by the cure might be the only way back..:)

Advice on E-Book Readers (Comics Talk Post)

JiggaJonson says...

@critical_d Don't listen to these fools.

If you want something that will take the place of books, get a dedicated E-reader.
I own a Nook ($99) and thoroughly enjoy the following aspects of it:

1) The text/display looks like paper/ink
2) You can read it in the very bright environments (even in direct sunlight)
3) You don't have to charge it after 4 hours of reading, instead, I charge mine about once every other month. Yes, you read that right, I only need to charge it every-other-month.

Yes, nay-sayers will tell you "but it can't do __________ and it can't do ___________"

To them I say "it does ONE thing REALLY WELL, it allows me to read books/newspapers"

Now, IF you have your heart set on just reading comic books, yes the Kindle Fire is your best bang for your buck currently: http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/11/16/142310104/why-amazon-loses-money-on-every-kindle-fire

p.s. If you've not read it, Alan Moore's The Saga of the Swamp Thing is VERY FUCKING GOOD. It's much better than The Watchmen imho.

kick ass-introduction to hit girl

dystopianfuturetoday says...

This was a great flick, and a good bit deeper than most critics gave it credit for. The movie earned it's right to have a murderous 12 year old by showing the heroes to be just as sadistic as the villains. I also think the film was making a statement about Americans, how we love violence, revenge and war, and how we rationalize our violence as acts of virtue. There are patriotic musical themes sprinkled throughout the flick that hint at this. If you breakdown the superhero, they are very authoritarian figures. I think this movie is a different take on some of Alan Moore's themes in Watchmen. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

Hit Girl was badass, and her action scenes were so well done. They'd better film a sequel before she grows up.

Constantine-lucifer confronts gabriel (spoiler)

budzos says...

Ponce, it's not a love-it-or-hate-it movie. In the comic book nerd discussions I've had with people who actually read the Alan Moore or Garth Ennis stuff (important, if you've read other shit you probably read some bad comics), most people look at it this way: It's a fine movie, a good movie, but a bad Hellblazer adaptation. And it is a bad Hellblazer adaptation. You say you're not crazy about the comic to begin with. So the fact that you prefer the movie to the comics (which you keep saying you're not all that familiar with) doesn't make it a good adaptation.

See, I could make Commando and call it an adaptation of All My Children. I'm sure many people would prefer my movie to the source material, but that would not make it a good adaptation.
