Skilift in georgia goes mad

eric3579 says...

Another terrifying angle

At least ten people were injured in a ski-lift crush in Georgia’s mountain resort of Gudauri.

The citizens of Georgia, Ukraine, Russia and Sweden were reportedly taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A ski lift malfunction was reported at Sadzele mountain ski trail in Gudauri in the morning on 16 March. There was an emergency stop after which the ski lift chairs started sliding back. The riders had to jump off the ski lift to survive.
According to the Georgian Healthcare Minister, David Sergeenko, 8 people turned to the Gudauri-based medical emergency clinic.

“Luckily no one was killed or seriously injured. There are two patients, the nationals of Ukraine and Sweden, who still need to be paid particular attention,” said David Sergeenko. According to the Georgian Healthcare Minister, the Ukrainian citizen has an open fracture of a forearm, while another injured person, a Swedish national, is a pregnant woman. Both of them have been transported from Gudauri to Tbilisi by helicopter.

The Georgian Ministry of Interior has instituted criminal proceedings under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Georgia – “violation of safety regulations or procedures for the operation of the railway, water, air or cableway transport traffic”.

Who's to blame for the Russian Georgian conflict?

EDD says...

Well, unfortunately despite yesterdays temporary truce agreement brokered by the French president Sarkozy, which both sides signed, Russian troops and tanks have already passed the city of Gori and are at this moment slowly approaching Tbilisi (Georgian capital). Something's seriously fucking wrong with their army chiefs, because president Medvedev ordered a ceasefire and the agreement said they'd be pulling out of Georgia, possibly even out of Osettia. This looks like they're trying to occupy the country for good.

Looking for blame is pretty fucking stupid at this point, if you ask me. Both sides escalated the initial conflict, but Russia has crossed all the lines there were to cross.

Watching a news broadcast on Euronews, something struck me, this isn't simply an operation to secure western influienced lands by Russian forces. It represents a political and strategic reclamation of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and the route of the future Trans-Caspian Oil pipeline.

Post collapse of the Soviet union the only oil routes for central Asian and Caspian states lead directly into Russia, giving the Russians a large degree of political and strategic influence over the energy flow into Europe.

There have been countless proposals to circumvent it, the BTC pipeline and the Trans-Caspian are routes that cross Georgia and through Turkey. Other routes use Afghanistan such as the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline.

Seemingly this is a false flag operation to dominate the last really untapped reserves of oil and natural gas found in Central Asia.

Hold the phone. So 15 years ago, Ossetia, with a rebel government leaves Georgia independence. Now, Georgia wants it back and moves in militarily. Russia starts to take it "back" in force claiming its residents as Russians and Georgia says:

"One hundred and fifty Russian tanks, armoured personnel carriers and other vehicles have entered South Ossetia," President Saakashvili of Georgia told reporters in Tbilisi. "This is a clear intrusion on another country’s territory. We have Russian tanks on our territory, jets on our territory in broad daylight."

WTF. I know Georgia is a much closer ally to the US and the west than Russia, but still. I'm confused. We must not be getting enough history to understand this. Who the F owns this land? So far, it looks like Georgia is at fault and should have let the sleeping dog lie.

Vahtang Kikabidze - Моя песня (USSR circa 70's)

Farhad2000 says...

This is one of my favourite songs from the Soviet film "Mimino", I would have loved to sift a trailer for you however there are no DVDs of the movies I used to watch really. He is the one who starred in the movie and also sang the songs. Prolly sifting this for myself but whatever.

Before stepping on stage this is what he says:

"Why do I sing this song? It's because I love the blue sky above Tbilisi, it's mountains, it's sun. When my soul is happy I sing it, when sad I still sing it. My song is born from this land, this sun, from my people. I sing and I feel as old age dawns, and I remember my childhood... I become very sad... but I still sing."

Kikabidze Vakhtang Konstantinovich, a professional singer, actor, screenwriter, producer, the author of many songs, was born in Georgia (Tbilisi) in 1938 on July 19th. Georgian national actor, the winner of USSR state premium, the winner of different international song concourses and film festivals. The chevalier of awards of honour of the king Vakhtang Gorgasali (of Nikolai Wondermonger and Knight Cross of St. Konstantin the Great). The honourable citizen. Here is the list of such films as: "Ne gor'ui", "Mimino", "Melodii Veriiskogo Kvartala", "Sovsem propashii" and so on. His last film "Fortuna" was made with the producer Georgi Danelia in 2000. Constantly goes on tours. Homeless Georgian student amuses self, entire country, by walking 30 km in 5h:34min while bouncing soccer ball on head

Krupo says...

Full story from Reuters page on google video: "The crippling energy crisis, frequent electricity and hot water cuts, high unemployment and corruption in the former Soviet state of ... all » Georgia have caused misery to most of the country's 5.5 million people. But for some the crisis has become an odd incentive to break unusual records in endurance. Goderdzi Makharadze, a 28-year-old student, has been squatting in an empty railcar at Tbilisi rail station since he lost his place in a student's dormitory. To him it doesn't make much difference, the dormitory room is as dark and cold as his railway carriage. Unable to afford a hotel or hostel, he lives in an empty carriage at Tbilisi rail station. It is also his training ground and he climbs railway poles to increase his concentration and skill in heading a soccer ball. He has already found his way into the record books. In 1996, he broke a record by heading his ball non-stop for eight hours, twelve minutes and twenty-five seconds. His last record was breaking the 1987 distance juggling record set by Polish dribbler Janusz Kmiotek. Makharadze walked 30 kilometres and 300 metres from Georgia's old capital of Mtskheta to the Tbilisi soccer stadium in five hours and thirty-four minutes, amusing tourists and winning large applause from the home crowd."
