Speaking Out On Street Harassment

I found that especially funny because of these "dress like a slut, get treated like one" type of responses here.
I know, the word "slut" isn't nice and I'm not good a political correctness (I actually loathe it) but maybe the problem is not with the word but with our associations with it.
You see, the problem I have starts with the idea that there's something wrong with sluts. As a man (and therefore certainly a pig, at least in my case) I enjoy sluts tremendously. They are women who share, at least in general terms, my sexual morals and enjoy their sexuality as much as I do (theirs and mine). I see nothing wrong with that. Sure, I dislike STDs as much as anybody but being slutty doesn't mean automatically being careless, just more at risk. Maybe I just don't understand men who like their female sex partners to be well behaved little princesses. They either prefer very conservative sex (you know, when blowjobs seem kinky) or they are strangely rapey. Maybe it's just our manly discomfort of loosing control over female sexuality.
Then there is this notion of dressing "like a slut". Sure, there is unappropriate clothing. I wouldn't go to a funeral in my Spongebob Squarepants pyjamas. But why is it in todays times, in the western world that is covered in billboards full of women in bikinis, so wrong to walk the street dressed in your best "sexy hooker" halloween costume? Are these women on the billboards, the ones who strike sexualized poses to sell me beer, dressed like sluts too? Is a bikini "slutty clothing"? I'm pretty sure my mom once wore one and yours probably too. As long as the important parts are covered, it should be fine.
The real issue, though, is the idea that anybody has a right to comment on that. Loudly.
If I have a right to comment sluttly clothing, can I also comment on other clothing that isn't the percieved norm? Do I get to shout ghost and terrorism related jokes at women in burkas? Can I yell at cops to come and strip-search me because I have a thing for uniforms? Should I yell at anyone with unfortunate clothing choices? "Hey lady, don't shake that ass, it's too fat for these pants! I don't want the Blob to escape!"
No, it's only sexually provocative clothing that gets these reactions. And that's why I like the video above so much, because it shows what kind of comments you get. It's never "young lady, I disagree with your clothing choice and insist you put on something decent!" nor "What a beautiful skirt, is it silk?"
It is always amused, approving and at the same time disrespectful and sexually dominant. Often gleefull and too often actually misogynistic.
These are never positive comments and even if the words seem positive, they're harassment. It's nothing but sexual harassment. Otherwise these men would be yelling "Young lady, I disagree with your clothing choice and insist you put on something decent!"
Dress like a slut, get treated like one, that's just a lame excuse for men trying to control female sexuality.
Personally, I think if you dress like a slut, I should treat you with respect and kindness. Because I want sluts to like me. I'm a pig.

For most of my adult life I worked as a painter, color designer and art director for animated TV shows like Ren&Stimpy, Invader Zim, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Spongebob Squarepants. I switched careers and now I'm an Art Director for social video games and work my ass off for an enormous company that everyone hates.

This is off-the-charts awesome. And that's coming from someone who hates Spongebob Squarepants (holy crap I just wrote that name *shivers*) with a thermite-bright passion. I might even have to change my opinion of Nickelodeon.

Personally, I don't give a shit either way. I can advocate violence without moving from my seat, because I'm not advocating anything for myself. I'm merely suggesting a better alternative for those in this video who are willing to stand up and do something to fight against their "oppressors." I'm offering a solution that doesn't involve standing in front of a group of musicians and chanting along with whatever they say. I love Rage Against the Machine, but when the crowd mimics their every word like a bunch of lemmings, it bothers me. Because they're not really doing anything. I'll bet you that most of those people didn't change a goddamned thing that day. But they all went home and said, "I listened to RATM live and a cappella!"

I could transfer a message to millions of people by shooting a bunch of people in a McDonald's. Within minutes, every 24-hour news station would be focused on Boise, Idaho, and my "message" would be sent to millions around the world. But that wouldn't mean they couldn't change the channel a second later and shrug their shoulders, saying to themselves, "Another one? Wow. Oh well, time for my coffee break!" So it's not transferring a message that is important; it's how the action of that message is activated. But what does it matter if that message is sent to millions of people who turn the channel to Spongebob Squarepants? That's what millions do every day, and that's what our President does, because he loves Spongebob.

So I sit at home and quietly wait for the government to eventually destroy everything for which our predecessors worked so hard. Does it bother me? Yes, to an extent. But I know that in the end I really don't care that much either way. I'm a bit of a pessimist and an apathetic figure, if you must know. But at least I'm honest. I'd really hate myself if I advocated violence and then sat at home, hoping someone else would do it for me. But that's not me. Oh, time for my coffee break.

weird how people write pathetic internet comments about how there should be an armed revolution, while sitting on their asses.
you're just embarassed here by someone actually doing something, actually transferring their message to millions of people... because you personally don't do shit.

Don't be so quick to return. This definitely needs to be discussed further. It is the exact same video.
Does this mean we are now supposed to allow everyone to start submitting dupes as long as the music is different?

That depends. Will there be an epidemic of identical videos being sifted with different music? I honestly don't believe so. Along the lines of what KP said, would this video have sifted had the music been from SpongeBob SquarePants? So can a person take any old video they want, then change the music to any old tune, and make it work? I don't think so.

If we have to throw this one out because the sound is different, then we'd have to throw out a bunch of other videos too, like the one KP mentioned for starters. I think these things need to be judged on a case by case basis. I think qruel's video should stay, but I say we should put it to a vote. I won't complain if I find myself in the minority.

Wait - how is this NOT a dupe?
From the FAQ: "alternate background music, will still be considered dupes." discuss

Well the rule sucks then, and here's why:

The music for both my video and this video are appropriate, yet they are distinctly different. However, NOT all music would be appropriate. If someone posted this video with the SpongeBob SquarePants theme it would suck. This video does NOT suck, AND it is distinctly different. If we are to firmly adhere to this rule then we should discard this video, because if you subtract the sound and factor out the zoom that was added after this video went viral then it would be the same video as this.

People know the difference and can vote accordingly. Leave this one alone. Remember that I posted the original, so if I can live with it then so can everyone else.
