SpinLaunch Engineering Doc - Throwing Satellites into Space?

noims says...

My intuition says this could never work, but Brian McManus lends a hell of a lot of credibility to it in my book.

If it does work out, then hopefully lots of cheap small payloads in similar orbits won't cause too much space debris.

Net Captures Space Debris

Mordhaus says...

What I mean is that space debris travels at speeds up to 17,500 mph or slightly more, depending on what height it is orbiting at. If you place this device in the path (or near it) of a known mass of debris, it is going to have to adjust and fire that net at a speed relative to the debris. If you have the device speed up or slow down to try and match the debris speed, it is going to rise or drop it's orbit height comparatively to the adjusted speed.

That is what I am wondering, will this device be able to catch something travelling at that speed? I'm assuming it would have to try without excessive movement changes or it would require too much fuel.

If I understand what you're asking, full speed is relative. Anything in orbit is traveling at a fixed, known speed to keep it from falling back to earth or flying out into space.

Once drag is imposed on the object it will start to fall and it's course will change toward earth. It will start to fall faster and then burn up in the atmosphere upon reentry.

Interesting fact:

Let's say a gun is fixed to shoot a bullet parallel to the earth. At exactly the same time you shoot that gun, you drop a bullet from the same height as the gun, both bullets will hit the ground at the same time.

If that gun could shoot that bullet 7,500 MPH (+ -), it would never hit the ground if it wasn't slowed down by air resistance.

Hope this helps.

Radical DEMOCRACY Adjustment For Fascism, NOW!

Democracy only really works when all parties have an equal say AND, adjustments are made accordingly for the benefit of all, right?? Well....When elected officials (United States version of concept) neglect or otherwise usurp through whatever means the ability of the stated so-defined system to function as envisioned, what then does one at the bottom of the societal food chain do?

America ain't no democracy, there has never been one anyhoo, nor can there ever be. We're something different here in the U.S. of the "now", and Amy, (I love ya honey please try some flattering threads and maybe eat more, yer on camera a whole fuck of a lot!) what Americans from anywhere have in America, changes constantly to the detriment of stagnation, de-evolution, or assholedouchbagcunts running the whole planet into the sewer.

Now, back to what I mentioned earlier in this rant as to what to do when the "the ability of the stated so-defined system to function as envisioned"...

One must create, outside of the realm of what they are programmed with...(a large piece of quality paper is included with the design instructions that came with this clusterfuck and's still quite legible and straight-forward in tone), and adjust the fuck out that system in a sane, fair humane, disorderly fashion that works for the MAJORITY of peeps, and this process must be maintained constantly....to keep it from becomming this bullshit again and again and again in one form or another.

Then move forward from there??

How to fix that which everyone seems to ignore as broken, but refuses to do much immediately about??
Who the fuck knows, but the guy or gal or imminent threat from oncoming space debris that provides a suitable answer that sticks for longer than a few thousand years, may get some attention-My bet would not be a politician-only-type.

As a species we're fucked-fucked if nanobots can't help us

Hint: Votes don't count, help, or get you free food, power, internet, etc.

(We could have all had this and more already y'know, if assholes weren't left free to run free and fuck and make more douchebag children of the same ilk.....This is why we should all have the same pointy-stick access to defend ourselves maybe???

UFO's Caught On Camera By International Space Station

UFO's Caught On Camera By International Space Station

rebuilder says...

I don't see anything clearly flying away from Earth's gravity here. Not enough information to deduce the distances by eye alone - these things might be flying in the atmosphere or simply passing between Earth and the Camera. The latter seems much more likely, considering the perceived size of the objects and the distances involved. I'm guessing this is what satellites or space debris on orbital trajectories would look like.

The flaring is interesting though, I wonder what causes that.

I would however add, that something flying away from Earth's gravity does pique my curiosity.

With the amount of space debris they say is floating up there, i have no reaction to these. Show me something that changes direction or stops and starts again, and you'll have my attention.

OMG OMG, we're under attack by lens flares, camera artifacts and space debris!!!!!
And lets not forget cosmic rays impacting highly sensitive CCD equipment. Or unfocused and overexposed dust/ice particles in the camera or just outside the lens.

I must admit, some of them are pretty strange though.

I agree much of it could be dust, photo imperfections, "known" space debris/junk etc. But what about the ones that take a "straight" course and then change direction. Clearly not an object in orbit. The one of the moon near the end, from the Italian tracking station struck me as "legit".

Though as someone else has already stated UFO is simply "unidentified" it is not evidence of aliens.

Take a clue from video games: armor skins and EM shielding. You won't get rid of space debris. Most of it has absolutely nothing to do with human activity and has been flying around the universe for eons. Deal with it.

Rocket re-entering Earth's atmosphere caught on film!!

LadyBug says...

January 4, 2007

A Russian rocket that broke up re-entering Earth's atmosphere over the United States had ferried a French telescope into orbit, U.S. military officials said.

Early risers in Colorado and Wyoming could see glowing trails of space debris from the rocket, launched recently from Kazakhstan, the Denver Post reported Thursday.

Rocket pieces as large as boulders broke off but disintegrated into shards before they hit the two states just before sunrise, said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kelly, spokesman for U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense.

"It's not a big deal at all," Kelly told the Post. "It lit up the sky over Colorado. This is a routine occurrence. This happens every day. It's just that it's not over Colorado. Most of the time these things hit the ocean."

No damage was reported. The debris wasn't thought to be hazardous.
