Where Are All the Bob Ross Paintings? We Found Them.

Sagemind says...

I think the Smithsonian will eventually sell prints and books, but I doubt they will ever sell off any of the paintings - Museums collect - they don't sell their exhibits.

Good for them! I love that the people in charge of his legacy seem to care so much about keeping it "pure" to the degree they're able. I'm certain a ton of these will be on sale eventually, but for now I'm happy they exist entirely outside the world of art collecting.

The LA Speed Check

SFOGuy says...

Ok; super geek time:

1) Smithsonian Air and Space, including the Udvar Hazy extension at Dulles; B-29, SR, and shuttle and for extra geek points
2) Make a special call and get an appt slot WAY ahead of time for the Smithsonian Air and Space's Paul E Garber restoration facility...There's is (or was) unbelievable stuff in there...

ChaosEngine said:

I actually did go to the Intrepid last time I was in NY (ye gods, it was 17 years ago... now I feel old) especially to see the SR 71 and the shuttle.

Bored my poor wife (then girlfriend) to tears, but it was geek nirvana for me. Totally worth it!

Divers Discover Blob

Going to go out on a limb here, big blob of fish semen/eggs from a mass spawning event...

Yup, squid eggs.

"Finally, a scientist from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Dr. Michael Vecchione, who saw the video, came up with a possible explanation of the underwater puzzle. Dr. Vecchione alleged that “the thing” is a huge squid egg mass, possibly the largest ever seen so far."

Sagemind, you are the first candidate for the biggest bukkake in history mate... ; )

From the Smithsonian article:
"already more than 70 percent of the processed foods in the U.S, such as snacks, breakfast cereals and vegetable oils, contain traces of GM crops because common ingredients, including corn, soy and canola oil, usually have been genetically modified."

Also from the article:
"And so far, there’s little to indicate that GM food is harmful to humans."

It says that more than 2/3 of PROCESSED food contains TRACES of GMO. Reality just isn't as scary as melodramatic music videos on YouTube would have you believe.

My biggest concern regarding GMOs is the relatively unknown influence it will have on natural ecosystems and therefore I am definitely concerned about Monsanto's political influence, but to say that it is all poison is just silly.

And yes, a YouTube video that uses dubious claims and a harrowing soundtrack in order to gain Facebook shares sounds pretty slactivist to me.

Plane crash scene from the movie "Flight"

SFOGuy says...

Saw a fascinating article in Smithsonian Air and Space magazine (I think) which basically outlined that the inverted roll thing would have never worked in a real runaway jack screw trim failure (which is what killed all the unfortunate people on that Alaska Airlines Flight).

Still, a great movie scene once you suspend your disbelief.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

I took my small family to DC a few weekends ago to visit the various Smithsonian museums, and I really fell in love with the Human Evolution exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. I would highly recommend anyone living on the east coast or travelling near there to visit, it's just extremely well presented and very accessible to everyone, both children and adults.
I was especially surprised at the end of our walk-through to see that the thing was funded by David H. Koch. It literally blew my mind, I guess just because of the nonsense that his sons have been up to for the past few election cycles. It seems to me that those two are responsible for funding so much ignorance, and yet their father funded this magnificent exhibition... I don't know, just weird.

Actually, David H. Koch is one of the two Koch brothers currently funding republican candidates. It wasn't his father who donated the exhibit, it was him. It does seem odd that a guy who has used his vast fortune to deny climate change also gives big donations to Nova and the National Museum of Natural History. I kind of doubt he's even dumb enough to sincerely be a climate change skeptic. I think he just cares more about being an ultra rich guy.

14 BILLION YEARS OF EVOLUTION IN ONE MINUTE

shagen454 says...

Boner: It is still confusing...

Astrophysicists have created the most realistic computer simulation of the universe's evolution to date, tracking activity from the Big Bang to now -- a time span of around 14 billion years -- in high resolution.

Created by a team at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics (CfA) in collaboration with researchers at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), the Arepo software provides detailed imagery of different galaxies in the local universe using a technique known as "moving mesh".

Unlike previous model simulators, such as the Gadget code, Arepo's hydrodynamic model replicates the gaseous formations following the Big Bang by using a virtual, flexible grid that has the capacity to move to match the motions of the gas, stars, dark matter and dark energy that make up space -- it's like a virtual model of the cosmic web, able to bend and flex to support the matter and celestial bodies that make up the universe. Old simulators instead used a more regimented, fixed, cubic grid.

"We took all the advantages of previous codes and removed the disadvantages," explained Volker Springel, the HITS astrophysicist who built the software. Springel, an expert in galaxy formation who helped build the Millennium Simulation to trace the evolution of 10 billion particles, used Harvard's Odyssey supercomputer to run the simulation. Its 1,024 processor cores allowed the team to compress 14 billion years worth of cosmic history in the space of a few months.

The results are spiral galaxies like the Milky Way and Andromeda that actually look like spiral galaxies -- not the blurred blobs depicted by previous simulators -- generated from data input that stretches as far back as the afterglow of the Big Bang, thus portraying a dramatic cosmic evolution (see the above video for a sneak peek of that evolution from four billion years after the Big Bang).

"We find that Arepo leads to significantly higher star formation rates for galaxies in massive haloes and to more extended gaseous disks in galaxies, which also feature a thinner and smoother morphology than their Gadget counterparts," the team states in a paper describing the technology.

Though the feat is impressive -- CfA astrophysicist Debora Sijacki compares the high-resolution simulation's improvement over previous models to that of the 24.5-metre aperture Giant Magellan Telescope's improvement over all telescopes -- the team aim to generate simulations of larger areas of the universe. If this is achieved, the team will have created not only the most realistic, but the biggest universe simulation ever.

Truth About Transitional Species Fossils

Raaagh says...

>> ^shinyblurry:

This video is complete fantasy. Take the evolutionary animation for instance..none of that is supported in the fossil record. All of those transitions are completely inference, especially ape to man. If you believe that, you are thick..do your own investigation. There isn't any conclusive evidence for ape to man evolution what so ever.
And you don't think they're looking for true transitionals? Why do you think evolutionists trotted out piltdown man and nebraska man as proof of evolution for over 50 years, and why today the desperate search is still on to find the missing link. They thought it was neanderthal man but it turned out to be a guy with arthritus and rickets. The fossil record isn't just incomplete, it is ludicrously so..with hundreds of millions of them uncovered yet no true transitionals. I'll let real palentologists explain it to you:
Our museums now contain hundreds of millions of fossil specimens (40 million alone are contained in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum). If Darwin's theory were true, we should see at least tens of millions of unquestionable transitional forms. We see none. Even the late Stephen Jay Gould, Professor of Geology and Paleontology at Harvard University and the leading spokesman for evolutionary theory prior to his recent death, confessed "the extreme rarity of transitional forms in the fossil record persists as the trade secret of paleontology."
He continues:
The history of most fossil species includes two features inconsistent with gradualism: 1. Statis. Most species exhibit no directional change during their tenure on earth. They appear in the fossil record looking much the same as when they disappear… 2. Sudden Appearance. In any local area, a species does not arise gradually by the steady transformation of its ancestors; it appears all at once and 'fully formed'. 6 The evolutionary trees that adorn our textbooks have data only at the tips and nodes of their branches; the rest is inference, however reasonable, not the evidence of fossils. 7
The British Museum of Natural History boasts the largest collection of fossils in the world. Among the five respected museum officials, Sunderland interviewed Dr. Colin Patterson, Senior Paleontologist at the British Museum and editor of a prestigious scientific journal. Patterson is a well known expert having an intimate knowledge of the fossil record. He was unable to give a single example of Macro-Evolutionary transition. In fact, Patterson wrote a book for the British Museum of Natural History entitled, "Evolution". When asked why he had not included a single photograph of a transitional fossil in his book, Patterson responded:
...I fully agree with your comments on the lack of direct illustration of evolutionary transitions in my book. If I knew of any, fossil or living, I would certainly have included them. You suggest that an artist should be used to visualize such transformations, but where would he get the information from? I could not, honestly, provide it, and if I were to leave it to artistic license, would that not mislead the reader? I wrote the text of my book four years ago. If I were to write it now, I think the book would be rather different. Gradualism is a concept I believe in, not just because of Darwin's authority, but because my understanding of genetics seems to demand it. Yet Gould and the American Museum people are hard to contradict when they say there are no transitional fossils. As a paleontologist myself, I am much occupied with the philosophical problems of identifying ancestral forms in the fossil record. You say that I should at least "show a photo of the fossil from which each type of organism was derived." I will lay it on the line - there is not one such fossil for which one could make a watertight argument. 2
David B. Kitts. PhD (Zoology) is Head Curator of the Department of Geology at the Stoval Museum. In an evolutionary trade journal, he wrote:
Despite the bright promise that paleontology provides a means of "seeing" evolution, it has presented some nasty difficulties for evolutionists, the most notorious of which is the presence of "gaps" in the fossil record. Evolution requires intermediate forms between species and paleontology does not provide them… 3
N. Heribert Nilsson, a famous botanist, evolutionist and professor at Lund University in Sweden, continues:
My attempts to demonstrate evolution by an experiment carried on for more than 40 years have completely failed… The fossil material is now so complete that it has been possible to construct new classes, and the lack of transitional series cannot be explained as being due to scarcity of material. The deficiencies are real, they will never be filled. 4
Even the popular press is catching on. This is from an article in Newsweek magazine:
The missing link between man and apes, whose absence has comforted religious fundamentalists since the days of Darwin, is merely the most glamorous of a whole hierarchy of phantom creatures … The more scientists have searched for the transitional forms that lie between species, the more they have been frustrated. 5
Wake up people..your belief in evolution is purely metaphysical and requires faith. I suppose if you don't think about it too hard it makes sense. It's the same thing with abiogenesis..pure metaphysics.
Now, after over 120 years of the most extensive and painstaking geological exploration of every continent and ocean bottom, the picture is infinitely more vivid and complete than it was in 1859. Formations have been discovered containing hundreds of billions of fossils and our museums are filled with over 100 million fossils of 250,000 different species.
The availability of this profusion of hard scientific data should permit objective investigators to determine if Darwin was on the right track. What is the picture which the fossils have given us?… The gaps between major groups of organisms have been growing even wider and more undeniable. They can no longer be ignored or rationalized away with appeals to imperfection of the fossil record. 2

You've been had..be intellectually honest enough to admit it and seek out the truth. Science does not support evolution.

Case in point.

Truth About Transitional Species Fossils

You think those quotes are made up? All you have to do is plug those names into google to find out who they are and what their reputation is. They're not made up and have nothing to do with the site itself other than being a collection of evidence which shows even evolutionists know their theory is completely flawed.
