Flagler County Sheriff welcomes would-be criminals

newtboy says...

Screw this rotten potato.
Should absolutely be fired.
Keep in mind, most people in jail have not been convicted of anything, and more often than not never are. Being arrested doesn’t make you a criminal or subhuman, despite his contentions to the contrary.

Prison isn’t for punishment, it’s for rehabilitation. He clearly thinks it’s for long term torture, which he clearly enjoys dishing out.

He better not EVER ask for more funding since he has enough to put together a $1200+ sign for his joke on taxpayer dollars. Cut his department’s funding by 25% now, and see if they still have too much and waste it on jokes only they find funny.

This guy needs to be sent to Maricopa jail and have his file lost, forced to eat green expired lunch meat while in a cell with 14 others designed to hold 4. If he doesn’t understand that he’s creating criminals then, send him to me, I’ll give him the treatment he deserves.

What a fuckwitted asshole. Someone shoot this sadistic fuck or frame his wife and children and put them in his torture chamber. No, on second thought just shoot him, he would probably enjoy torturing his family.

Judge Locks Up Parkland Shooter for Life, Throws Away Key

How many of the victim's families care for rehabilitation? How many criminals put effort to rehabilitate more than just concerned to survive in there for another day?

So there's always a mix of both though in "Correctional Services". Different countries have different mixture of punishment v. habilitation. Guess how much the USA care for rehabilitation v punishment. Which is more profitable? It's madness, but the benefactors running the system loves locking people up.

IMO, If prison is for punishment, life sentences are proper.
If prison is for rehabilitation and safety, death sentences are proper.
It’s all about what your society really wants from incarceration….not what they SAY they want.

On capital punishment I guess I am somewhat from the Canadian POV. IMO the defense for a Death sentence shouldn't lie in 'punishment' but in public protection against re-offending. If crimes are sufficiently egregious I think you can make the argument that the rights of the convicted are outweighed by the need to protect society given society may have reasonable cause for mistrust of the future actions of someone who's already committed something particularly heinous.

Grave Diggers “Can Hardly Keep Up With Demand"

newtboy says...

Your point?
States with highest gun violence rates
Mississippi -- 28.6 per 100000
Louisiana -- 26.3.
Wyoming -- 25.9.
Missouri -- 23.9.
Alabama -- 23.6.
Alaska -- 23.5.
The list, and trend continues.
Republican states consistently have higher gun death rates, the top ten states for gun deaths are all Republican led….so much for blaming Democrats.
Republicans don’t care. The #’s point this out horrifically and consistently.
Republican states also don’t care about keeping the lights on or having running water in their cities anymore…I’m looking at you, Texas and Mississippi. Florida has abandoned education in favor of far right wing indoctrination for children (maybe with field trips to Epstein island with the ex president if they’re good and pretty and will sign a binding NDA).

(Pretty chicken shit to claim Dems don’t care, while Cons block every attempt they make to solve the issue, but you do you.)

Um….did I EVER advocate gun free zones, or even indicate I think they’re possible in America? I don’t think so. Why must you always fight windmills and paper tigers? It doesn’t make you sound sane.
It would be excellent…if it were possible. No one is hunting inside city limits, if no one had guns, no one would need guns. It’s not possible unless we take drastic, unconstitutional actions (or change the constitution like the founders intended).

There aren’t enough gun regulations when a schizophrenic person can legally buy as many guns and as much ammo as they wish, and so can murderous gang members who served their sentence/probation.

They DO need MUCH better enforcement of existing gun laws, we agree there. If laws were applied consistently regardless of the perp, there would already be less gun crime. The problem with that being prisons are so overcrowded they simply cannot house more, and most police seem to not be interested in or capable of legal crime-preventative policing, so making illegal gun possession/use come with harsher sentences simply isn’t going to happen….and has never worked to stop crime.

They also need to remove “loopholes” (intentional back doors) that allow mentally ill and violent criminals to legally purchase firearms with absolutely no background checks and no paperwork. Seems to be a no brainer, but your ilk calls that “terkin’ er guns” (I have to believe because you know you’re all insane and can’t pass mental health screenings), not sane regulation.

No surprise you think more draconian punishment is the answer….how’s that been working out? Not great. Countries that focus on rehabilitation of convicts instead of simple housing for profit have recidivism rates near zero, unlike the US.

Using a gun in the commission of a crime already comes with pretty harsh penalties, btw….often turning misdemeanors into felonies just by having it, not using it.

Prison reform is one part of any functional answer, not more, bigger, worse prisons for longer sentences. Funny, you thought the same when Jan 6 defendants started being rounded up and denied bail…odd you cared about all those ANTIFA and BLM activist though. 😂

Philly PA is a Democrat city/ state..
Democrats don't care. You #'s point this out.

2016 277 murders in Philly
2020 500 murders in Philly.
1990 500 murders in Philly.
2022 300 murders 2/3 of the way.

You want Philly to be a gun free zone?

Sorry can do that.
There are enough gun laws.

Need to make the punishment for improper gun use that causes these occurrences extremely harsh.

How robots could end animal captivity in zoos & marine parks

newtboy says...

Well, I don't go to zoos because I understand they're keeping wild animals in captivity for the visitor's entertainment, and in most cases I find that awful. I would be much happier seeing animatronic critters paying for wild animal rehabilitation.

cloudballoon said:

But would people still goes to the zoo if they know they're seeing robots?

Zoos could keep the mandate of conserving & breeding endangered animals back to health, and get out of forcing animals to do performative shows for human entertainment and still bring in the tourism dollars and/or government funding for their good work without the unnesscasry cruelty.

The World's Worst Oil Related Disaster You've Never Heard Of

newtboy says...

Screw the money, it won't save or rehabilitate the poisoned zones. Instead arm the Amazonians with military grade weaponry, and legalize the execution on anyone involved from rig workers to lawyers for Texaco/Chevron to the CEO and their descendants, wipe their DNA from the planet. It will never happen again if we give them what they deserve, slow painful death by massive petroleum poisoning.

Cop Who Shot Walter Scott Pleads Guilty, Gets 20 Years

newtboy says...

Rationally, no, but my lizard brain sure does.

In reality, I don't want prison to be about revenge, I believe it works much better if it's about rehabilitation, no matter who the prisoner is. Also, I understand that prisoners lives and safety are the responsibility of the jailers (us) and I don't want to pay their survivors for their deaths or injuries.

That said, it is a satisfying fantasy to think about racist murderous cops at the mercy of a gang of pumped up vengeful Crips, but no, I don't really want that.

How to guide to systematically impoverish a group of people, blame them for their completely reasonable response and then "rehabilitate" one or two to demonstrate that it's about individual responsibility, education and personal development.

Deadpool 2 Teaser

RFlagg says...

I'd guess the Firefly posters were more a nod to geeks. Deadpool 2's director, David Leitch (also directed John Wick), did stunt work in Serenity. Or could be a joke about Ryan Reynolds, Fireflies in the Garden, though that one is a bit more of a stretch. I'd guess it mostly is about just a nod for the sort of geeks who got behind the project in the first place... or perhaps a casting hint at who may be in Deadpool 2...

As for a rehabilitation idea, this may have filmed around the same time Fox said they'd be open to a reboot if Joss himself would be on board. Though given that came news came out in early February, I'd think this had already been filmed and in the bag by that point, unless they cut things that close in film making. If it was filmed after that news, then it certainly was a nod to that news.

Which part offended you? Is it the "We" part? Replace "We" with "Americans" if you that makes you less offended.

Nobody's asking you for an apology, so I'm not sure what liberal guilt has to do with anything. I just stated the fact that we did a piss-poor job, societally speaking, by:

1) Enslaving people
2) Failing to rehabilitate them after emancipation

@MonkeySpank Fascinating how your thoughtful comment on the psychological effects of horrendous treatment for over a hundred of years, followed by being the victims of terrorism for an additional hundred years, gets re-written into some codswallop about liberal guilt.

Fascinating.

Understanding The Pedophile's Brain

newtboy says...

10-15 IQ points BELOW AVERAGE?!? That means gorillas and birds may be more intelligent.

If this study is correct, and pedophilia is a brain disorder, that means by law we need to excise all pedophiles from prison and put them in treatment/mental hospitals. Suddenly, prosecuting pedophiles is a violation of the American disabilities act.
Putting people in prison/to death for physical deformities is not what we do in a free society.
I hope these findings are a step towards an effective treatment.

It does seem that we, as a society, are so disturbed by their actions that we create restrictions for them on release from prison that invariably put them back in, restrictions like where they can live, work, walk, who they can talk to, often not allowed to use computers, etc. It seems to me that if we're going to hold their crimes against them for life in that way, we should maybe simply make it a death penalty crime and quit pretending we think we can rehabilitate them when we don't really think that.
