Old Guy Takes Down Two Big Trees

Stormsinger says...

The only time we ever cut a tree, we were shocked at how far it "jumped" with the final cut. The base of the trunk flew at least 12-15 feet, coming -way- too close to the truck supplying the tension. That pulley allowing the truck to supply tension from a different direction is nothing short of brilliant. If only youtube had been available in the 70s, we too could have been smart.

Russians doing sketchy sh*t

greatgooglymoogly says...

Not as sketchy with the parachute. I would have liked to see the video as he slid down the cable of the carabiner getting worn away. Idiot should have had a pulley that could roll.

Friends Create DIY Ski Lift

newtboy says...

...tears of joy. ;-)

There was one of these in a national forest near me, with wheels attached to numerous trees used as pulleys to hold the downhill rope up and a tireless motorcycle providing power from the top. It's far longer (150-200 yards) and steeper than this one. Now it's abandoned with the motorcycle gone, but it was used for years. Old school.
They used to have these at real commercial slopes with handles attached, they were called T-lifts.

How Scary is the Paranormal Activity VR Game?

gorillaman says...

These things always drive me crazy watching the cables trail behind them and get tangled under their feet. You're spending all that cash on a VR setup, you can't hang a hook or a pulley from your ceiling?

Another Tree Felling Fail

Payback says...

When you tie that far up in the air, the net force is pulling the truck's ass end up in the air, losing traction. Then, adding on the fact the numbnuts didn't have the front diff engaged (assuming he's not one of those weirdos who puts a lift kit on a 2WD), the truck was there for no reason whatsoever.

Should have tied off a pulley to one of those trees to the right and brought the truck directly at the camera.

A New Level Of Archery Skills

Asmo says...

I think you're underestimating the draw on some of those bows as well. They look like kids toys, but classic short bows (rather than modern compound pulley bows), particularly horn ones, can range from 45 to over 100 pounds draw. You don't need a deep draw to propel an arrow at killing speeds, particularly at targets under 20 feet. Even in chainmail.

Stormsinger said:

Chain mail was never just metal rings...it was always backed by hard leather at the least. I do not find it believable that a 10# bow could penetrate -real- chain mail. When he gets some unbiased, reputable third party to verify his claims I'll reconsider...until then, I can't see this as anything more than some kid's fantasy.

How an Engineer Moves an Elliptical Upstairs

Magic: Peter Marvey - Le velo

JiggaJonson says...

What??!?!? You're both wrong. Look @ that stupid pulley setup that's oddly in the shape of a set of folded legs and unusually thick in just the right places.

after the video stops playing it's on a perfect freeze frame of his body for you to see he's all contorted and uncomfortable b/c he's sitting turned exactly 90° facing the audience with his legs facing the right.

Cracked Chiropractor Commercial: Is This For Real?

criticalthud says...

...in my experience, i have found that young practitioners in any modality, full of absolute conviction and surety, are the ones most likely to injure their clients.
I find that the deeper PT's, rolfers, and massage therapists study and work by musculature, which again is a reactive system in the body, the worse their results are. The focus on muscle strength, length and size has a psychological basis - we are in the mechanical age....thus we analogize to this...seeing the body as mechanical, robotic...a system of pulleys and hinges, insertions and attachments. Our emphasis is however misplaced. We are 70% water - and are more accurately a system of pressurized membranes and relationship, where fluidity is at a premium.

A Light That Runs On Gravity

raverman says...

Imagine a village that takes 7 hrs by dirt road, a boat ride and a walk of 2 hours to reach. Lamps and fires are sustainable because people can understand, maintain, and fix them.

The answer to poverty is not fancy engineering and technology. It's understanding the context of the problem.

Potential energy and LED's are a great idea... but why do people have to spend a weeks worth of food on your plastic device?

Go back and redesign this with every day items, a rope, a pulley, cogs maybe something as a fly wheel. Make it open source.

Go Home Crane.........You're DRUNK!!!

probie says...

Well, it looks like the crane starts to flex or oscillate right before the operator tries to swing the heavy end over to keep it from tipping. Couple that with the elevated center of mass and...well, you saw it. Not sure what caused it to start warping horizontally like that. Maybe a tension line snapped? Or the pulley got stuck and suddenly let go? Dunno. Regardless, that's not gonna buff out.

Timing Belt - the Forgotten Belt

Payback says...

When having an expensive repair done:

1) Can an item involved wear out as well, causing almost or as much cost in labour?
2) Can failure of the item cause damage or shorten the lifespan of the item you are repairing?
3) Is it cheap and easy to replace "since you have it apart"?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, it's a solid, logical idea to replace the other items.

The idler and tensioner pulleys tend to be the reason your timing belt fails before normal wear occurs.
The water pump is usually 3-4 bolts and an O-ring and tend to cost $50-100. The labour involved is IDENTICAL to the timing belt (and actually changing the belt when you change the water pump is a good idea too.)
New accessory belts for your alternator and power steering et al. are cheap.
You would also be smart to have your battery and alternator tested while they are disconnected. Most auto electrical shops will do that for free, just make sure they're reputable.
