Possum

newtboy says...

Lizards aren’t newts/newts aren’t lizards…but it would have made exactly as much sense…I also raised lizards.
Dad called me newtboy after I started raising newts.
Mom called me possum since I can remember…but I never knew why.

Wait. I thought you are a lizard boy.

Possum

newtboy jokingly says...

No. I’m not sure of that at all.
I grew up in a swampy forest on the outskirts of Houston, and like possums (opossums to be technically correct) I was just a big muddy swamp rat climbing trees and playing by the bayou for most of my childhood.
Also I do have a pouch.

Are you SURE your mom wasn't just thinking of your physical similarity to a possum?

I never knew why my mom always called me “possum”…now I get it, it’s because I’m so much like Jeebus!

Felix Colgrave | THROAT NOTES

From a reddit comment..

The guy seriously knows his Australian ecology.

I'll list out some of the amazing detail on flora and fauna he's put in there starting from the Allocasuarina littoralis tree the Black Cockatoos are sitting on. It's one of their favourite foods.

The frogs are probably Peron's tree frogs (Litoria peronii) based on the eyes and calls

Then the Angophora tree has the leaves in the right place

The spider orchid (Caladenia sp) in the grass

The waratah and sickle fern (maybe) in the possums hat

The old man banksia (Banksia serrata) as you stated

There's a lot more, but that's what stuck out to me. The guy's really done his homework while making that.

Hiker Followed By Bears

newtboy says...

I'm happy that I have run into bears here. It makes me feel like our area isn't as devoid of wildlife as many places are.
We have all those listed, plus skunks, possums, gophers, salamanders, elk, and yes, bears. Once I even saw a porcupine walking down the highway.
Twice I've had bears cross a river less than 50 ft from me while I was fishing just blocks from home, and before I built my fence they ravaged my apple trees every year with the elk and deer.
It's still a possibility that a bear is what paralyzed our puppy in our yard last June. We never found out what happened to her, and she's not talking, but she is up and walking.

I hope I never run into bears in my rural area! I only had seen birds, coyotes, dogs, humans, snakes, butterflies, (w/rabbit)s, horses, bun(nie)s, cat (just one), squirrels, raccoon, etc.

Baby Raccoons toy with angler

newtboy says...

I have to say, I grew up in a forest where seeing raccoon and possum families was a near daily occurrence, often inside the house, and I did see the kits out playing during the daytime alone sometimes. Had we assumed the parental units were flat meat, we would have split up a half dozen or more families to "rescue" critters that were just fine. I feel like that happens a lot, to the critter's detriment. You know what they say about good intentions, right?
Now, if he looked on the road and there was a large female freshly killed nearby, my opinion might change, but best bet if you don't KNOW they're in need of help is to just leave them alone and assume they'll find mom soon, imo.

"so they were likely not orphans"

Likely doesn't mean 100% certainty.

Hate to say it, but my instinct is that Momma is a pancake on the highway.

Never Piss Off a Mama Raccoon

shagen454 says...

They are such pains in the arse... I used to live in an area that was in the city, but basically forested, the coons one time, open the door, ran across the kitchen and pulled a huge bag of cat food outside. These were some big coons; the possums were assholes too.

I haven't seen a coon in years across the Bay, until a couple of nights ago I heard some weird snarling in front of me in my backyard, I thought one of the cats had gone mental, put on my phone light and there was coon snarling at me two feet away - as it had it's ET fingers on some old nachos that used to be in the trash.

The All-Seeing NostraDonald

newtboy jokingly says...

His crack research team screwed up...first, two possums are not "A" possum....second, I'm fairly certain those are Opossums.

Leopard attacking villagers in India

newtboy says...

Wow! In the US, we only have to remove raccoons and possums from the attic, never leopards, panthers, or lions.
Poor guy didn't seem to be having a good time.
