How the Pink Tax Is Ripping Off Women

eric3579 says...

I'm pretty sure that the women paid twenty cents on the dollar comment is highly debatable. My understanding was that when you actually compared apples to apples it was around six or seven percent. Still not zero where it should be but also not twenty as was stated. (edit) John says 4-8% https://videosift.com/video/Is-the-Gender-Pay-Gap-Real

And just for fun i wanted to check the prices myself for the items in the video.

The CVS Menstrual pain medication they compared are NOT the same.
The menstrual product has Acetaminophen AND two additional ingredients

The razors are not on CVS website but are on BICS website. Comparing prices of the two products shown in the video, the "womens" one was actually cheaper by fifty cents. Also can't be sure that the razors they are comparing are exactly the same. Probably close enough though.

Mens Flex 3

The same kids snorkel i found on Amazon. The one shop who actually has it in pink and also has two other colors are selling them for the same price.

The baby walker i found on Wallmarts site, and the pink one cost more. The other has been discounted from its original price.

blue/green https://www.walmart.com/ip/Delta-Children-Lil-Fun-Walker-Choose-Your-Color/50862051?selected=true

The Underwear were as stated in the video. Different quantity at the same price.

Well that was a fun little project

Bill Maher: Julian Assange Interview

I don't know what folks you mean or how squeaky clean you mean, but I think if you search the internet long enough, you'll find someone childish enough to accuse Hilary of corruption for, say, cutting the queue at Burger King. I agree that you can't expect people to be perfect since birth, do people really ask for that?

I look at the world around us: unbelievable wealth inequality, global warming, oil wars, illegal invasions, the hijacking of Greek democracy, the great bankers bailout swindle, austerity politics, the pay gap.... I won't go on. The world has not been well managed for a long time now. A national leader represents a fuck-ton of people and their decisions can literally lead to the slow or immediate death of all of us, either by inaction or incompetence or mistake....etc. Honesty and integrity have got to be important now, even if the old ways seem familiar and comfortable. I would argue it's childish (naive) to say let's ignore those things.

Sorry, but the US womens soccer team in no way deserves to be paid the same as the mens soccer team. That's just ridiculous.

They deserve to be paid MORE.

I constantly hear people defending a wage gap between men and women (especially in sports) saying that the men bring in more revenue (even Ronda Rousey said that *related=http://videosift.com/video/Ronda-Rousey-Demolishes-Feminist-Reporters-Pay-Gap-Question).

Ok, boot's on the other foot now. I'm sure all those same people will be clamouring for the women to be paid in line with the revenue they generate.

@Babymech
jesus holy christ...

were you truly unable to discern my tongue firmly planted in cheek?

and then take issue with pay gap discrimination?
ok-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Pay_Act_of_1963

/cue rainbow

which you may take issue that i used wiki as a reference, which is pretty much your counter-position to my links.

which is just utter weak sauce.

oh that study was by a conservative think tank and therefore they have an "agenda".nevermind that christina hoff sommers is a feminist, nevermind that you didnt refute the numbers..lets just stick with "agenda" to refute any and all statistics that do not coincide with your narrative.

should i gather by implication that christian hoff sommers is not a feminsist?even though she identifies as one? or is she just the "wrong" kind of feminist?

come on man,are you really that blinded by your own bullshit?

and then you proudly attempted to dissect the rest of my comment taking positions i never took, but was rather using to express that in much of our dialogue..i was fucking agreeing with you.

you literally wrote one big, massive and utterly useless straw man.while i was actually trying to have a conversation.i may have indulged in some smart assery but that is mainly due to my perception of you.that i respected you enough not to treat you like a precious little flower or some fragile snowflake.

maybe you see this is as a right/wrong dynamic.

but here is the cold, hard truth:context matters.
and if you insist on viewing this situation in such a narrow and myopic way,the larger context will ALWAYS be unavailable to you.

so until you are ready to evaluate, without bias, new information.that may possibly contradict your current narrative, then you will always be stuck in your own self-delusion.

you were challenged.
your response was lack luster and a straw man.
and i can only assume by your words that any contrary evidence or contradictory opinions that may conflict with your own will be met with similar straw men, presumptions, deflecting and goal post moving.

because if ya cant beat em,
berate and belittle them.

@Babymech

are we playing the numbers/statistic game?
oh goodie../claps hands
i love these games.
can i play?

since i actually agree that mens issues are different than womens in certain cases, and that you recognize that the "patriarchy" affects men as well as women.i see no reason to address something we both agree on.

so we can agree the base premise is "power vs powerlessness",and that women have a right to address this power structure, just like men do,because BOTH suffer under its influence.

but then you posted some tasty links for our enjoyment, and then made the specious claim that this somehow made your argument MORE valid.

ok..lets play by YOUR standards shall we?

1.the gender pay gap, which before 1962 may have been a valid argument, but since it is ILLEGAL to discriminate in that way in regards to pay,and if true would translate to waaay more women in the workplace (because corporations love them some dirt cheap labor).so why is this trope still trotted out?why is it given so much validity as being born as fact?when no serious economist ever sites this disparity, yet so many keep regurgitating this gap is being a real thing?

well,i will just let a feminist economist break it down for you:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/christina-hoff-sommers/wage-gap_b_2073804.html

see? just got me one of them fancy links you like so much.

2.political power in regards to gender.well,i cant argue the statistics.there ARE more men in politics, but what your link fails to do is ask a very basic question:why?why are there more men than women?

pew research addresses that question, and is fairly in line with your link:http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2015/01/14/women-and-leadership/

3.as for who suffers from the most sexual violence.well, according to your link which uses cdc numbers, women suffer far more,BUT (and is the statistic that the women in my video pointed out) when you include prison (which the cdc did not) that number flips on its head:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2449454/More-men-raped-US-women-including-prison-sexual-abuse.html

so the situation is not some cut and dried situation, and there are extreme elements of any social movement, but those elements should not invalidate the message.

just like this woman in my video is not dismissing feminism, she is disagreeing with feminisms more extreme authoritarian bullies, who because they scream louder and are more controversial..get more attention, but that does not make their position MORE important just because they are louder and more obnoxious.

in fact i would posit that this obnoxious behavior works against the very thing they are trying to convey.

we can all agree that we all want equality, fairness and justice and the current, and historical power structures, have always sought to retain and even further their own power.which has been traditionally held by men,but this does not automatically equate to men getting a free ride, quite the opposite.

so women absolutely have a right to challenge this power structure, just as men do.what they do NOT have a right to is imposing their ideologies upon me,or this woman in my video.

this woman has received death threats and threats of physical violence from other feminists! just because she had the audacity to disagree with their position.

at the end of the day this is actually a human issue, and a valid one and we all have a right to our own opinion, but not a right to impose it upon another.

feel free to disagree.

Babymech says...

There are BLM activists who make inflammatory comments about white people (oh no whatever shall we do) and there are feminists who make inflammatory comments about men (oh no whatever shall we do). I posit, for your reasoned consideration:

  • 1) We can pretty much take it; we as a group already have most of the money, most of the privilege, and most of the presidents. We don't need a safe space.
  • 2) In neither case are we talking about the 'majority' of either movement, and the instances where people are horrible shits do not invalidate the justice and relevance of their respective movements.
  • 3) My list is doubly convincing because it's got bullet points and numbers.

  • Also, please don't say that men suffer from most or all of the opression that women suffer, as much or to a greater degree, without sources. I'll give you some examples of what you could have done:

  • Women suffer from a gender pay gap compared with men. (Example source: a crazy feminist blog called the US department of Labor, "Highlights of women's earnings in 2013")
  • Women suffer from a political power gap compared with men. (Example source: a scurrilous lesbian twitter account called the World Economic Forum, "Annual Global Gender Gap Report 2015")
  • Women suffer from sexual violence at much greater rates than men (Example source: some man-hating bull dyke known as the CDC, "Sexual violence facts at a glance, 2012")

  • See, that's what you could have done.

Given the actual facts I have a hard time seeing how anyone has 'destroyed' feminism.

    newtboy said:

Well, if a majority of the 'black lives matter' people normally chanted 'death to whitey', 'all white people are rapists', 'Anyone who's skin is not brown is evil', etc, especially if they then used their group to harass and quash any dissent, I don't think they would get much support either.
So the fact that men suffer from most, if not all of the issues 'feminists' claim are forced on them solely BY men, almost to the same extent, or to GREATER extents while being completely ignored and actually blamed IS a reasonable argument against today's brand of anti male 'feminism'.
It is not a reasonable argument against equality...but that's no longer what 'feminism' is about.

The Daily Show - The Future of Gender Wage Equality

    Sagemind says...

    Honest Question.

I'v heard about this pay equality for years....
But I've never seen the discrepancies.
In every job I've been in, the pay was always the same for men or women. Always.
Any job I've seen for friends or family, the pay rates were always exactly the same.

In more than 2/3 of the jobs I've held in my life, my bosses above me were women, not men.

My question is what parts of industry is the pay gap true, and is it as widespread as they are saying.

    (because I'm not seeing it.)
I can see how most CEOs are male run, that is a slow change, but the majority of positions I see are equal pay.

    Okay.... Go....

Porn Actress Mercedes Carrera LOSES IT With Modern Feminists

    dannym3141 says...

I think the lady makes a very good point about damage being done to sex relations, and often times it seems the internet-generation feminist is actually not interested whatsoever in equality and is more accurately described a misandrist.

Very recently in my own country we had a number of famous feminists fighting to get rid of "page 3 girls" - semi nude models in tabloid newspapers. It never happened, but even as it was happening there were page 3 models complaining because it meant they'd be out of a job they enjoyed and got paid well for. No woman OR man should feel forced to take their clothes off in public for any reason, and in fact that is the case as these people are not slaves but career models by choice. What was actually happening was a prudish approach to human sexuality had been disguised as an equality thing; and the language was always of course referring to the little girls - because if you disagree with little girls having to grow up to go topless you're a certified monster and pervert.

That kind of shit really detracts from the things that are seriously unfair such as, most obviously, the pay gap. No woman should get paid less for the same job. There's no "rape culture" that i've ever heard of if your sample size includes greater than 1000 people in the west, and terms like that detract from the argument again - if you want to talk rape culture then look to India, where there is (and needs to be more) attention on changing the attitudes of the male community towards females because of horrific acts taking place.. almost commonplace. And to India's credit there was a big campaign tied into their favourite sport, with social media involvement and obviously most men proudly wearing symbols and stuff. There are parts of that society that has issues that could do with feminism.

But this is the profession of being offended. You have to drum up publicity, it has to be viral, or you don't get paid. You don't get a column in the newspaper or the mag, you don't get enough hits on your youtube to make enough money. Not if you talk about the pay gap or the gender inequality in less "civilised?" societies.. no, you do that by talking about the tits on page 3. Or espousing something unfair and incendiary; something someone will want to argue with. Nothing that fits with common sense. These people are self publicists - they will make a spelling error on a tweet to encourage others to call them stupid, correct them, essentially RETWEET AND REPLY AND FOLLOW AND LIKE!

Whether or not Sarkeesian(?) should have commented, there is a point well made in this video. I've been on the receiving end of something disguised as feminism in the past, and all it did was make me wary of anyone under 30 that calls themselves a feminist. Before i can establish whether that means misandrist, i have to establish common ground, because i'm a feminist too. What we need is more decorum and less extremism. You can't change the world without the help of both sexes, why alienate each other?

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

    Jerykk says...

draak13 is completely right. There's not enough objective data to establish how wide the pay gap actually is. Comparing by industry or education level is too broad to be useful. For example, in the videogame industry, the wage disparity between positions is pretty large. Based on my experience, women tend to be artists while men tend to be programmers. Good programmers are harder to find than good artists and as such, they get paid more. If you were to look at statistics regarding wage disparity between genders in the videogame industry, there would be large disparity because women are simply doing jobs that pay less (regardless of your gender).

The Yale study is interesting but it's only one study. We need more data to establish trends.
