This Man is a Genius

newtboy says...

Unless you count the sift I’ve never been on any social media platforms at all, but I’ve also never owned a cell phone. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been the only person in a crowded room not glued to a tiny screen.
I’m a weirdo, and I like it that way.

I hope you’re wrong and the sift endures and thrives again by itself for its (as far as I know) unique curation of YouTube (and other site’s) videos, but that will take more than a handful of users posting. If it merges with a big chat site it’s going to become a different, more impersonal animal, maybe an animal no one likes.

I took a break from social media a few years ago. Life's much simpler now!

Videosift needs to integrate with a popular chat platform - or several. Discord, Reddit, something like that. They all have their downsides, but if we want to keep Videosift alive, we've got to plug into the mainstream.

Tesla driver loses control as car speeds down street

newtboy says...

Yeah…Elon doesn’t have enough problems right now, time for him to merge his car and his rocket companies and get his cars to become unguided missiles. Next step is Twitter integration to target non verified pedestrians. That will make $8 for verification seem worth it!

Holy shit!
Sometimes unbelievable acceleration and AI driven steering isn’t such a good thing. Yikes!

Miami Beach condo collapse

Mordhaus says...

They do have codes, Florida actually has some of the strictest building codes in the country. The building was actually being worked on and updated to meet additional local hurricane codes at the time of the collapse.

Every state has to meet the codes established by the ICC or one of the organizations that existed separately before they merged. The only city to ignore these codes and go completely by their own code is Chicago.

At the municipal level, the city can add more building codes to meet specific local hazards or weather. Miami/Dade has very strict hurricane codes that need to be met.

I suspect that we will find that the fault in this lies with the building owner failing to meet code or maintenance updates in a timely manner, as well as the fact that the building experienced subsidence in the amount of 12 cm between 1993 and 1999. This is not that unusual in structures built on barrier islands and it ceased sinking in 1999.

Good thing they don't have those pesky liberal building regulations and code enforcement there in Florida.

Karma Comes for Traffic Line Cutters

luxintenebris says...

something folks don't talk about when discussing the dangerousness of being a police officer: carpal tunnel. man, that's a lot of tickets.

[at least one, silver p.u., cut back in. if the officer saw it, and made them pull over, would there be a second offense for unlawful merging?👮‍♂️ ]

How To NOT Use A Roundabout

Spacedog79 says...

Multiple lanes are for going different directions, left to go left, middle to go straight on and right to go right. If people get in the correct lane ahead of time they shouldn't need to cut anyone off.

In the US for example going left you'd be in the left lane, but as your go around the lane you're in will merge right. If you keep in the lane you'll be on the right by the time you get to your turnoff and you won't be in anyone's way.

Hmmmm....in America, and I'm pretty certain Iceland (the only countries I've been in with roundabouts) it's the reverse....the car in the roundabout has the right of way. The yield signs are at every entrance. That works fine on single lane roundabouts.

My big question is, on multiple lane roundabouts like freeways, which lane has the right of way? How does a car in the inner lane exit without just cutting off the outer lanes?

Car Cuts Off Semi Truck

jimnms says...

You realize that the camera is mounted at the center and top of the windshield, so it has a larger field of view than what the driver can see. The driver is to left and not sitting as high, so there is no way the truck driver could see the intentions of the car. It is 100% the car's fault because you NEVER merge into traffic that is overtaking you, especially a big ass truck.

Khufu said:

Also, the truck shouldn't be following a hundredth of a second behind the truck in front and when it was obvious the silver car was going to do the lane change there was ample time to take the foot off the gas, this was a 50/50 at fault if we're honest.

Tailgater Climbs The Ladder Of Success

AeroMechanical says...

I see a lot of fail to go around in this video. Naturally, the biggest failure is on the part of the driver who failed to secure their cargo. that is grievous and inexcusable negligence (assuming it wasn't the result of freak equipment failure like a strap breaking).

I don't like all the cars swerving out of their lane to avoid the ladder. Can't really say for certain from the video how aware they were of surrounding traffic and distances involved, but that is usually the wrong response. Better to come to a complete stop in your lane if you have to. I'm pretty sure the tailgater wasn't aware of that pickup coming up on his left.

And of course the guy not leaving enough space when he had plenty of alternatives available. That guy and his like-minded buddies are the primary reason 40% of my commutes over the last two weeks have been an hour and a half instead of the 20 minutes they should be.

I think it must be the heat or something, but way too many people have been driving foolishly or like they're defending their position lately.

At least two second intervals. Let other drivers merge. Use the accelerator on the on ramp--you should be going the speed limit by the time you have to merge with traffic. We'd all get home quicker that way.

Ah, that's better. Thank you Videosift for the therapy session.

Car pulls out of rest area without looking

Lukio says...

I hate when people ignore to check and don't accelerate when merging, no matter if on a freeway or else where. Unfortunately no matter how good or careful you are of a drivers, you are always sharing the roads with others that can be completely unreliable.

Car pulls out of rest area without looking

wtfcaniuse says...

It's much closer to 3 seconds than 6 from the point you can tell the merging car isn't going to stop.

AeroMechanical said:

He had six seconds to react and did nothing to avoid a collision for five of them. I imagine the letter of the law says that it's the merging car's responsibility to merge safely, but if you're driving in the outside lane past an on-ramp, you ought to be watching for merging traffic. Just having the right-of-way doesn't excuse you from being vigilant about avoiding accidents.

That rest stop is very poorly designed. An on-ramp onto a freeway should be long enough to give merging traffic enough distance to accelerate to the speed of traffic on the freeway. Also, there should be signage to indicate there might be merging traffic.

To me, this looks very much a case of poor driving all around. The truck driver obviously wasn't paying attention to the on-ramp. He had six seconds to react and did nothing to avoid a collision for five of them.
