I also like the group. Totally unexpected from an all girl Japanese group, and they’re GOOD! inventiveness and talent together are a rarity.

I’ve always thought it was a horrific decision, but not at all because of the immediate effects or massive death and destruction they caused in Japan….they fucked around and found out and deserved everything they got (and I was unaware the Russian Manchurian offensive timing, but it’s even more reason to not drop a second bomb or even a first if we knew it was coming).

I think it was horrific because we had no idea what the long term effects of even minimal fallout might be, and in fall/winter the jet stream runs from Japan directly to the highly populated West coast (which we knew well thanks to balloon bombs), so some portion of the fallout was guaranteed to fall on millions of US citizens. We lucked out that it wasn’t deadly a year later, and didn’t cause horrible birth defects with near zero exposure…we had no concrete idea at the time though just guesses, and still don’t have a clear idea of how much it contributed to higher cancer rates in the US.

Keep in mind, we had no idea what discussions the Japanese were having amongst themselves , so no idea how effective our bombs nor the Manchurian offensive were at persuading them to surrender. Hindsight is 2020, but at the time we were flying blind.

The uncertain risk there of possibly killing millions of ourselves or gimping or sterilizing or even Cronenberging entire future generations for the comparatively minimal convenience of not using conventional bombs, to me, is no where near worth it. There were just too many unanswered questions about too many factors. I’m sure the soldiers fighting at the time would feel differently.

Absolutely!! In the last years I’ve reread Beowulf and the Art Of War, and read Gilgamesh, The Water Margin/Heroes of the Marsh, a half dozen good books on Japanese tattoos, 2312, Artemis, two books of Viking mythology, and 3 books of Japanese horror/mythology….I would recommend all….so clearly they’re bad.

FYI: The "5 vehicles combine into a giant robot" concept was a very popular cartoon concept in Japanese animes WELL BEFORE Voltron. The later ones got even more than 5 members, went up to 15 and was the most outrageous of the concept (adapted into the latter Vechicle Team Voltron in Western media) iirc .

Voltes V was first aired in '77. While the original Lions Voltron came out years LATER in the mid-'80s. So can't claim plagiarism.

There's this book by a Wall Street Journal reporter, called "Wrong About Japan"--and in one sequence, he asks the creator of Godzilla (a monster created by a nuclear accident/testing, who rolls around destroying...Japanese cities, even if inadvertently)---about it's relationship to WW-II and being the target of nuclear weapons...and the Japanese creator flat out denies it. They were stopped from just discarding the primary vote by legal injunction, and they appealed saying they’ve done this so often that if they allow people to file for injunction against this illegal election fraud then the courts will be clogged for years because they’ve done this uncountable times.

It's obivous where she's been fighting in the Black vs. White camp, and that fight has been so eternal that who is she to be concerned about Jews' or Asians' (let alone sub divide Asians, into Indians, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc.?) struggles that much?

Reminds me of when I was in New Zealand. Our flight out of Milford was cancelled for low clouds, and some Japanese tourists took the plane sightseeing around Milford fjord. They crashed into the fjord, hundreds of meters deep. The family wanted to send robots to recover the bodies, but I couldn’t fathom (no pun intended) why. For a fraction of the cost the entire family could visit them in New Zealand every few years for eternity….no brainer!
