You are gonna hate me now, but I grew up reading Dean Koontz and Stephen King years before the librarian at my middle suggested Lovecraft, so 12? My first Stephen King was Night Shift, with the eye in the middle of a mummified hand; Jerusalem's Lot ruined my ability to sleep. For some strange reason Lovecraft comforted me but King disturbed me lol -- My first Lovecraft reading was The Festival.

Anyway, it's my mom's fault, i jus read whatever she had lying around the house, which also included Mary Higgins Clark, Robert Ludlum, Danielle Steel, Michael Crichton, and who even knows what else.

Totally agree in having absorbed the material rather than fully understood. I mean shit, how does a 4th grader even under The Rising Sun? It's just shocking and strange. Like d3coding a new language.

I also read a lot of young adult thriller suspense books, notably Alfred Hitchcock's young readers books and short story collections. Ray Bradbury collections, random Asimov Foundation books, and old copies of Analog, that my dad would buy from local library sales. (Thas how poor people shop for books hahaha) He was the old school scifi guy, but not at all into horror.

I suppose I don't mind hacks. Reading the letters of Oscar Wilde changed my opinions on EVERYTHING. If Wilde belongs to the criminal class or what Danny Devito's character Frank terms the "Fringe" class, there must be some saving grace even in the intellectual crime of the hack writer.

I didn't like how it went from witty, good beat and rhymes to douching it up...yeah, I get it...it's part of the persona but broke the rhythm...all that said--great battle. Glad to upvote it.

And I think Hitchcock won hands down. So much effort to become the character he plays. Lloyd is God...

There are a lot of ways to do this kind of shot that don't involve any kind of greenscreen. Unfortunately I can't think of any good examples at the moment, it's been more than 15 years since I had those classes in college, but I saw many from mid-century 1900's (lots of Hitchcock for one) that showed how they'd work around camera visibility and such.
Meh, that wasn't a helpful comment, was it? Well, at least you know... something! Plus it's good to know there are ways to achieve mind-bending visuals that don't involve CG. Pre-CG-era filmmakers were quite clever.

At the very beginning where that woman says he used Hitchcock's techniques to build up fear... yeah, that's why Prometheus sucks balls. Does Ridley Scott even know how to build up suspense like this any longer?

Same thing for video games, as well. Flashy and dumb. I remember a day when I was forced to use my imagination... to think.... problem solve.. we used to care what the human brain could create but no longer................................ is it so bad to leave things to the imagination?!

Bit of a tangent, but if Stephen King's IT were hungry in modern day Dairy, Maine, I don't think it would be able to play off of the fear of children because their brains wouldn't be able to imagine IT to begin with. They'd be adult dumb, waiting for someone to show them what to imagine. I guess that's a good thing. Anyway!
