Russian Cargo Ship Loses Cargo of Big Ass Pipes

bremnet says...

They aren't wrapped in wood, but if this is uncoated pipe, some will lightly tack weld a ridge or piece of scrap barstock to the OD of the pipe to keep it from rolling when building the stack; they aren't there to prevent this type of major rolling action. At around 1:33 you can see one of these going over the edge. Just guessing, but these look to be in the 20" to 30" diameter range with plenty of length, so they're just really small ships with the ends cut off and will float for a bit until well flooded - lots of surface area there for some buoyancy, and I've seen 40 foot joints of 20" diameter casing float near the surface for 30 seconds or so when a bubble gets trapped temporarily inside before burping out and sinking to the bottom. At around 2:15 you can see the big reddish block with the vertical groove right on the corner of the load platform about 1/4 of the way up the frame. That's where normal humans stab the stake or pipe to help contain the load (so, the vertical pipe or solid stake goes in the hole, the load is built, and no rolling can occur - momentum is the killer here, so if you keep things from rolling, life is good. This was an excellent example of how not to load pipe on a barge / ship.

I was wondering why some of them seemed to float, but it looks like they were wrapped in wood planks.

John Oliver - Confederate Mascot

Two things....

This is an old story. Did any high school take them up on their offer?

And...

I was really grooving on the USA chant. What I heard was "United States of America" -- which is what we are supposed to be. In addition to being a symbol of racism, that flag was also a symbol of traitors to the concept of United States. Flying that flag over a State Capitol is not exactly a statement of being an American citizen.

So I was grooving on that chant!

Whitewashing Hollywood Roles

Parody? I don't think so.

Creating new grooves in white people's brains. Reshaping the paradigm.

Can't change it if you can't imagine the change.

Japanese Girl Is A Better Drummer Than You

ChaosEngine says...

Talent will get you so far.
So will hard work and practice.

Want to be great? you need both.

Talent is meaningless without the dedication to build on it. Likewise (sadly) you can practice til you bleed, but you'll never overcome your innate lack of ability (I know, I've tried).

This girl clearly has both. Now, she just needs to dial it back a notch on the fills and let her groove show. Remember, the musicians serve the song, not the other way round.

Dave Grohl vs The Animal - Drum battle

ChaosEngine says...

Alone in the category of overrated drummers who prize technical ability and a massive kit over groove and feel.

Give me John Bonham any day. Or even Dave Grohl.

Hell, I'd rather have Animal!

As much as I love these two, Neal Peart still stands alone.

The Daily Show - Ben Carson Blames the Victims

It's obvious Trev has the same talented writers, but I sure hope he finds his groove soon or they're going to have to bring back Stewart. I'm giving him a long benefit of the doubt because he's replacing Daily Show perfection, but he needs to grab a hold of something. Make it his.

The material is there, but his delivery is... meh... his standup is excellent. I wonder if he's someone who requires a lot of rehearsal to get the nuances in sync.

Another Truck Hits That Massachusetts Bridge

newtboy says...

I take exception with the description. It CLAIMS there are 'warning lights', but I don't see any at all. it CLAIMS there are warning signs, but all I see is the single small 'caution' sign with terrible placement so it blends in with the speed limit sign and the junction boxes on the telephone pole. The only noticeable sign does not indicate any low clearance, it warns of grooved pavement ahead. It would be simple for them to put up the type of system where small weighted red balls hang from above WELL BEFORE THE BRIDGE that will hit any oversized truck AND trigger flashing warning lights on the bridge itself. Instead, they put up easily missed 'warning' signs, and a camera to catch the action they know is coming. I've been seeing footage of this bridge for years, there's absolutely no excuse for them not fixing the problem, yet they have not fixed it. If I were a truck driver caught out by this bridge, I would definitely sue the city for knowingly not fixing a known issue, and knowingly not even putting up visible warnings.

Jon Stewart's Last 'Bulls**t' Rant On 'The Daily Show'

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Yep. It's the nature of the world to change, and the nature of old people to get hung up on nostalgia. Something to do with grooves in my brain.

New Method For Making Wood Corners For Drawers Or Boxes

AeroMechanical says...

Very cool and very clever, but if the goal is speed and simplicity what makes it better than cutting a v-groove with a router and folding that together? Is it that much stronger? Seems like something worth patenting, but unless the shape isn't as relatively arbitrary as it seems, surely there is some variation on it that's better in some way, and could you patent that? Seems like it might be jumping the gun to announce it before iterating the design and perhaps applying some computer analysis.
