Stunningly real graphics

ChaosEngine says...

oops, I mis read the original post as an i5 and a lower spec gpu.

You are correct, my apologies.

Low-spec PC? Around the same as XBone/PS4? Get real. This stuff was rendered on an i7-3770 / GTX670. The XBone can barely handle Diablo 3 at 1080p.

If the next-gen console games supported keyboard and mouse, I would have bought one. It's up to the developers to include KM control, but most don't - citing that it would be unfair in online multiplayer. I think just having a flag/tag that users could search for "gamepad only" online servers would solve that problem. I think there were only 2 PS3 titles that supported USB Keyboard+Mouse (Unreal Tournament and something else). Or even if they allowed KM for single-player campaigns, games like Killzone and Resistance would have been much more enjoyable to me.

So I upgraded my PC to an 8-core AMD FX-8320 + 16GB ram + GTX 750 Ti for less than the cost of Xbox One. (my projector's only 720p, so don't need a high-end GPU to get good framerates)

I am a graphics coder at Respawn. I understand where the claim of a "decade-old-engine" comes from, but I assure you we entirely rewrote the renderer backend and heavily modified the rest.

I'm not an authorized spokesman so I can't confirm anything that we haven't already talked about publicly, but pretty basic insight confirms what I've said: for example, all modern PCs and consoles use DX11-class GPUs and the "decade-old-engine" you mention only supported DX8 and DX9.

Anyway, I'm really glad you like the game! We've worked hard on it and hope it does well.

@VoodooV 5 grand? That's just the cost of the gpus! The whole rig came out at over 10k. And yeah, it's ridiculous, but it's meant to be. It's the Bugatti Veyron of gaming pcs, it's more about seeing what's possible than being actually useful.

@lucky760 I still play heaps of TF2 and it's still pretty popular. The CoD MW guys have moved on to whatever the latest CoD is.

@serosmeg, I played the beta. I have an old Amd quad core and a hd6950 gpu. Neither are close to top of the line these days and the game ran fine.

You can expland like crazy for the coming years. The fact it;s smaller doesn't mean you don't have space for upgrades. The upgrades themselves are smaller too. SSD is small. HD can be added by daisy chain, GPU can be upgraded too.. Here is a guy who made a video about a $25000 upgrade which could be done..

Bitcoin Explained

spawnflagger says...

It should be noted that creating a currency other than the existing Dollar, is illegal in the USA. (that won't stop people from using bitcoin, just not legally accepted). Not sure of laws governing Euro...

It used to be computationally easy to generate bitcoins, but nowadays you need a fast GPU or large cluster to even have a chance.

Also, I remember a story of guy who generated a ton of bitcoins early on. Someone found out, broke into his house and stole all his computers - and with them, his bitcoins (~ 5 million). Good luck trying to tell the insurance company that you had $350 Million worth of bitcoins stolen...

VoodooV says...

The problem is that consoles these days don't have anything really new to offer except for more processing power which people really don't give a shit about as much anymore. The Wii proved that you can make a ton of money without having the best GPU/CPU.

You also had this phenomenon of consoles becoming more popular than PCs. But wait, they achieved this because the console added all these extra features...in other words, Consoles started to beat PCs....by becoming more PC-like. Wait a minute...that's not exactly beating PCs then is it?

Especially since I can still do more with a PC than I can do with a Console and I don't have to be restricted by what MS/Sony/Nintendo lock me into.

With the advent of Media PCs...the need for consoles have been lessened unless you specifically want to play a game that is an exclusive for a console.

What people really want is convergence, which is exactly what console makers don't want. I think people are sick of having to buy multiple consoles to play the games they want. When in reality, a PC can do it all and not be limited by these artificial restrictions.

YouTube Flickering Scrubber Issue in Chrome (Sift Talk Post)

radx says...

It's just the Chrome/Flash combo and embedded YouTube videos, right? HTML5 embeds working fine?

If so, you can either switch to HTML5 or try this workaround for the time being: deactivate hardware/GPU acceleration for both Flash and Chrome.

1) Add "--disable-accelerated-compositing" to your Chrome shortcut, so that it links to: /chrome.exe --disable-accelerated-compositing
2) Right-click on the video -> settings -> left-most tab -> uncheck hardware acceleration
3) Restart Chrome

Again, that's just a workaround until they fixed whatever is wrong with it.

Guild Wars 2 - What A Wonderful World

berticus says...

If our characters still exist in the next BWE, you should look out for me and @my15minutes. One of my character's names is "General Discomfort" and his is "Phaedrus Silverwood". Come hit things with us!

I believe @JiggaJonson might also be a player?? Hell, we should probably just have a videosift guild, now that we can be members of multiple guilds!

[quoting got all messed up.. sorry]

That is Kenny G's "What a wonderful world". I feel Rick Rolled in the most horrible way.

Fixed tags and description... I thought the sax sounded out of place from what I remembered of the song, but it was clearly Louis Armstrong's voice so I went with it.

i just played almost non-stop all weekend for the 2nd beta weekend event. the game is just incredible.

I played far more this weekend than I did last BWE... and thanks to work, I barely played the stress test at all. But yes, the game is amazing. My blog has nearly become a "let's praise GW2" blog. I really think they should stop with the gameplay beta tests and move to more optimization test, especially GPU optimization. One or two of those tests and I think they could be ready to announce a release date... The one test every 4 to 5 weeks isn't easy...

Oh man, I just saw an upskirt and I was not prepared.

LOL. I had to re-watch the video again a couple times to see what you were talking about then I caught it... at least she had long pants on under her skirt, though they were semi-flesh colored. I made a "Let's Play" video myself and was a good 4 minutes in before I noticed my character had been flashing her panties while running up ramps or stairs, or if I moved the camera down to look up at the higher areas of Divinities Reach... she changed from her town clothes to her armor set then.
