Penn Jillette: Camera Tricks Are Not Magic
I saw him and Teller couple years ago in Vegas, awesome awesome show. Except for a few tricks they pretty much explained how they did everything. Then they explained how they hate the TSA very very much, and sold wallet sized metal plates of the Bill of Rights, and a plastic knife/comb combo just to fuck with the system.
First Look At Firefly Browncoats Unite Special
Things I liked about Firefly:
- Mal was sometimes moral and admirable, loyal to ship and crew, but also a dirty sleezebag when required. Awesome hero/anti-hero combo
- Young Morena Baccarin = HOT!! Loved the sexual tension she had with Mal
- Self-reliance of western + mystique of space = WIN. I think that atmosphere is what made the show so enticing, so full of possibilities
- They sometimes spoke chinese words and phrases, such a clever and original prediction of our cultural future
- Fuck lasers (only had it in 1 episode I think)
- Outer space is silent (with very few exceptions), THANK YOU FOR RESPECTING PHYSICS AND COMMON SENSE.
What I didn't like:
- silly overelaborate dialog sometimes
- Gina Torres is too smoking HOT for Alan Tudyk, sorry I didn't buy them being a couple for one second
- Speaking of Alan, I was always expecting him to be so funny, but he never was, and his character was so bland and dispensable, which explains why he was killed in the movie
- Nathan Fillion should've toned down being so clever, I wish his character were a bit darker. Can't stand him in Castle either, sorry.
Die Antwoord is a ninja. A terrible, terrible ninja.
EIA. Ninja Samurai combo with White African hip hop. Someone go and shoot this guy in the face please.
Very Strange Talent.
Creepy AND talented! What a combo. I absolutely adore his audience =oD
Jimmy Kimmel - Horrible Back to School Outfit Challenge
The funny thing is, my 3 y/o son would have loved the purple, sparkly, dress/hat combo. I wouldn't have been able to peel it off of him.
A Look at Windows 8 - It's Almost not Terrible
Ctrl+L is not esoteric and plenty of people use keyboard shortcuts. I don't care whether it's part of a Windows library or not but if it's widely used across existing Windows installations you'd expect to be able to use them again in the new version of Windows. But if the new interface is going to disconnect from the desktop experience I just don't understand why it has to be linked at all to the desktop. Schizophrenic indeed. The user-interface needs to be consistent and harmonious. Hasn't everyone got that memo by now?
What they're showing with the search failures is that demonstrates a lack of focus on making the desktop interface as polished and user-friendly as possible. If nothing else it appears rushed and sloppy.
I want the system to be gleaming right out of the box - I don't want to have to note all the little exceptions and workarounds . Clearly in some aspects they've put in some work with multi-monitor support and Explorer but in other areas it looks incomplete.

Yeah, I'm not sold on the whole interface at all. BUT these guys are also missing things which I got pretty much straight away.
The typing to search for things, and not finding 'device manager' et al... if they just looked then below the search box it shows that it's matched items within Apps/Settings/Files So the default is to show just the apps that match, but if he clicked on 'Settings' then it would have shown him what he was looking for without having to actually go to control panel first. And my guess is there's an option for the search results to list all three of those things. DO THEY NOT LOOK AT THE SCREEN... Arg... now they're doing it for printers. The screen says 'NO APPS MATCH YOUR SEARCH', and then it has 17 matches in settings, and some matches in files.
Then they start bitching about Control L, which isn't a windows thing at all
The tabs thing is definitely something to bitch about, as it makes zero logical sense to have everything hidden off screen and not be able to access things without right clicking.
Yes, it looks like Microsoft have not considered non touch interfaces enough, which is a huge oversight. And it really seems they've taken something that was working really well, Windows 7, and stuffed touch stuff over the top and then said it was all done without looking at whether it was a cohesive whole.
So I don't like the look of windows 8 for non touch devices, but these guys jump to conclusions, don't read the interface properly and assume that everyone is a power user who uses the esoteric key combos they use (even when they're specific to particular apps).

Big Audio Dynamite - C'mon Every Beatbox
Huge BAD fan here. The BAD lineup from the 80s (Jones-Letts-Williams) is such a great combo and a culmination of Don Letts' efforts at the Roxy to fuse punk with reggae. And Jones' love of hip hop and Clash alumnus status made him the obvious frontman. 1989's Megatop Phoenix is BAD at their very best. Great band.
Man Changes Bike Tire in Less Than a Minute
Yeah, he used a CO2 canister-based pump. Very handy for quick changes, but you need to be careful to do as he do and aim upwards when inflating (downward facing = greater chance of freezing inner tube - from experience). Note: Depending on temperatures and canister size (12g, 16g etc), CO2 canisters often only get you back up to 80-90PSI, which may or may not be enough for your setup
This was a great (and impressive) display. As someone who has changed HUNDREDS of flatties, my ramblings, FWIW:
- The tyre/rim combo can often mean removal (and reseating) of the tyre is a PITA, due to slightly small ID tyre bead and slightly oversize RIM OD. Inevitably this requires n+1 tyre levers, with n being the number you have in your pocket (tip: wheel quick releases make good emergency tyre levers at a pinch)
- 30 seconds spent identifying/removing source of puncture (glass/wire/thorn) saves many minutes of rework when you get another puncture a minute later from the bastard wire strand you didnt look hard enough for
- always carry a patch kit (or 1-2 of the self-adhesive sticky instant patches). Two punctures on one ride is rare but it happens and being stranded out of cell coverage then trying to peel off bar tape to seal a puncture is a way to ruin a good ride
- Replace old tyres. There is an exponential growth curve that describes the relationship between tyre age to incidence of punctures. Old tyres are the single most effective way to spend lots of time on the side of the road yelling
Jeremy Scahill: A Short History of Drone Warfare
Out of any reporter, I have the most respect for this guy, he's just completely non-bullshit and also really knows his stuff, a pretty rare combo it seems. *quality
Mumford and Sons - Roll Away Your Stone
LOL.
Mumford & Sons is one of the few bands I would pay good money to see... and that list is shortened by the fact that some of them simply can't tour with the proper lineup (Pink Floyd, the Beatles), others likely would never (classic Genesis with Gabriel, among the few single acts I would see)... Some I might see only if they were part of a larger festival, but these guys I would see on their own... if the unique combo of time, money and location ever came together.
Discovered them here on the Sift a couple years ago when The Cave was first posted and have been a fan ever since. So thank you Sift.

Wow. WOW! Can I give you a NON-GAY-FOR-THEM love letter, to pass on to them?

No sorry I am under strictest instructions to only pass on gay love letters...
Harrison Ford Watches Indy For The First Time
The Last Crusade - best Movie + Computer Game combo ever!
Anyhow:
What would have made this clip really epic is if he had bad things to say about Uncharted too, and it would all be cut in context of the "Crystal Skull" thingy that some (fools) claim to be an Indy movie.
There are Three movies made featuring Indiana Jones, and Two featuring Mad Max.
Driver Attemps Hit and Run, Gets Blocked in By Other Drivers
People who say to hug the side clearly have never actually done this. For one he is on a bridge with no pull off's, so if he gets sandwitched he is a gonner. And other drivers are not much better...drivers. Taking up a whole lane and forcing drivers to pass normaly is more ideal then trying to make a 3 lane highway out of 2.
That said, a smart biker would have just used the foot path and done a combo of walk/ride, stopping to pass people, for the length of the bridge.
Freddie Wong: Magic Prank... does not go as planned!
Combo-Breaker!
