Why the Olympic monobob event is only for women

Getting the most out of factory downtime

SFOGuy says...

Had buddy who was a chemical engineer with a petroleum background---After the British Petroleum blow out in the Gulf, he told me that he knew it was going to happen; that it was always going to happen--because BP had always underspent on maintenance. He explained it like owning a boat. If you aren't spending 10% of the cost of the boat on maintaining it every year, you're doing it wrong. That includes maintenance, downtime, and prevention/OSHA/Worker safety.

Tell me again why you don't blow out the candles?

ant says...

I can't blow due to my disabilities so I have to use other ways to blow out the candles like what he did.

When Magma Meets Water

drradon says...

Understand that there is a difference between phreatic and phreato-magmatic eruptions... Wohletz and Heiken are referring to well blow-outs that can occur when the well casing or cement bond between the casing and the formation fails (it's also true that, if the well is cemented in poorly consolidated formation, the formation around the cemented well can fail and allow steam to rise to the surface). Those events could, arguably, be referred to as phreatic eruptions. But most geothermal wells are not drilled into molten magma - as I noted in my original comment, that has occurred rarely but, when it has, it has not triggered a phreato-magmatic eruption.

John Oliver: Primaries and Caucuses

newtboy says...

Um...you know Dan Savage is a HUGE Clinton supporter, right?
You were able to read how one sided and assumptive his article is, right?
Read -"Another way to look at this is that these results is that they should be deeply worrisome to you if you're expecting that Hillary Clinton is going to win in a blow out in November." "HILLARY CLINTON", not "The Democratic Nominee".
THIS kind of one sided, dismissivness is what I'm talking about, and why independents won't vote for her, knowing that she and her zealots will toss them aside the instant they have their votes.

EDIT: Rereading him, I can also see how he's unintentionally pushing for Sanders without saying his name, by explaining why you should be extremely worried if you think Clinton can win in November. I wonder, will Clinton supporters all fall behind Sanders if HE is the nominee, or would they let the world burn? No one EVER asks THAT question.

Swat Team Completely Destroys Home Chasing Shoplifter

Mordhaus says...

Wow.

This is why our police does not need to have access to military gear. You had one suspect with a weapon, you talk him out or you rush multiple parts of the home. What you don't do is blow out every wall in every room, tear down the fences all around, and make it look like a warzone.

Now, as a dog owner, I would be pissed because if they knocked down my fence, both of my beloved pets would run out and be hurt or killed. What if there were kids playing in those other yards? The sheer lack of consideration for the damage they were doing is atrocious.

The worst part of this is none of that money that is going to be paid on lawsuits over this is going to come out of those jackbooted thug's pockets. It's going to come out of the people of that community's taxes. That is horseshit. I would force them to sell their toys and demilitarize, then take that money to pay people.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR OUR POLICE TO BE ARMED WITH MILITARY GEAR!!! If you are going to police us with the same gear the military has, then you are basically the military and should be subject to Posse Comitatus and the Insurrection Act of 1807.

Massive Fall and Swing from Top of "El Capitan", Yosemite

kevingrr says...

@deathcow

If he is only into the anchor and it blows out he goes down. An anchor is typically two or more equalized points of protection.

Given the amount of force he was planning to put on the system my guess/hope is that he was into two bolts (basically permanent) and maybe backed up on some additional pro (temporary protection). Some may consider that overkill as two solid bolts in granite are pretty strong.

Also if the rope fails or is cut he goes down.

Unlike the movies most ropes don't snap or slowly unravel - they typically get cut on a sharp edge or sharp gear (which should have been replaced).

Tyre Slasher Kharma.

Mashiki says...

>> ^renatojj:

Wow... that was so unbelievable I have to call it fake. Doesn't matter if it actually happened, that's some real fake shit right there.

Never worked in either a tire change shop, or apprenticed as a mechanic huh? So back in my mid teens I was working in one, we had this retread come in. This was back before the government mandated that all 2nd retreads had to be tubed. While the air was going into the tire, the retread blew and took the machine out. Well there went $18k. We found chunks of aluminum from the machine in the concrete walls of the shop. We were lucky no one was seriously injured or killed, but shit like that does happen from time to time.

A car tire can blow out your eardrum, a truck tire can take out chunks of your arm if you're unlucky, it will break it easily enough. Hell, I've had a truck tire blow out the side window in my car from the air pressure on the highway when they went.

Irish Guy's Commentary on Olympic Sailing

SFOGuy says...

That was funny. FYI, was he was actually seeing at the end of his commentary was the start of one the closest and tightest classes of Olympic sailing (Lasers)---two ways to play that start---either bunch up at the point closest to the committee boat (and have the much vaunted windward advantage for the first leg of the trial) or give up on trying to get that and find clear air anywhere on the start line and try to get clear of the pack by out accelerating them in the undisturbed air before cutting back.

Sailors in this class burn between 3000 and 6000 calories a day; they blow out their backs; their training can include regimens as extreme as 400 crunchies and 200 push ups between morning and afternoon training sessions.

But yah; if you're not into, it can be boring ! LOL
