Japanese Whaling Ship Shears Bow off High Speed Anti-Whaler

schomg says...

So in your world non-human animals are only eligible for life and dignity if they're endangered? Do you consider killing animals an act of harvesting a resource, and if the resource isn't running out it's all good?

The Japanese are catching Minke whales in Antarctica. This whale is nowhere near endangered by anyone's estimation.

Japanese Whaling Ship Shears Bow off High Speed Anti-Whaler

TheFreak says...

The Japanese are catching Minke whales in Antarctica. This whale is nowhere near endangered by anyone's estimation.

So what we have is a bunch of people objecting because they either mistakenly believe these whales are endangered or because they have an emotional response to the idea of whales. But why are whales so special compared to, say, cows? Because we fantasize that they have immense intelligence? Because we paint majestic pictures of them?

I'm not claiming all objections to whaling are invalid. I'm just suggesting that maybe the knee jerk reaction against whaling is mostly unfounded.

If you're totally against whaling then I dare you to go interfere with the whaling that's going on in the U.S. I doubt that will happen though, since that whaling is being carried out by native Americans. You can hardly be an earth-mother supported and object to native American customs.

Antarctica: awesome submarine videography

westy says...

well i don't think Antarctica is the last stop of the journey on earth , pretty stupid txt to put in a video with interesting footage.

whats funny is how bland and how little there is to film , im pretty sure thay could have done a better effort with some of the shots maby filmed the ice in more interesting ways when underwater.

They feed by pushing out their stomachs through their mouths

Hmmm. I watched this recently, thought it was already on the Sift.
Found something that looked like one of these worms in Antarctica once (5 m long). Half dead and washing up on the shore... lot of speculation as to exactly what it was. It's great to see some behaving normally.

Thanks & Apologies & A** Gravity (Wildwestshow Talk Post)

Fusionaut says...

Choggie must be some sort of autonomous virtual intelligence, buried underneath Antarctica thousands of years ago in an ancient, alien temple. In order to disable him one must pose some sort of paradoxical, or illogical question to him. This will re-boot him and he will eventually begin to make some sort of sense. Any takers?

DC TEA PARTY - MARCH FOOTAGE WITH INTERVIEWS

KnivesOut says...

If we're really clever, maybe we can convince them that the world is coming to an end, and that we're all going to leave on big colony space-ships. The "Real Americans" get their very own ship, and they all get the honor of being the first off the planet.

At some point, Glenn Beck, O'Reilly and the rest of the Fox crew are gonna get these people unified into one cohesive army and somehow convince them all to attack Antarctica.
The day after this army departs they're all gonna show up on air and be all, " Phew Well guys.. it took over a decade but we finally got rid of all the nut jobs. We here at Fox want to apologize for putting you through all that.. anyways, everyone still in the U.S. gets a free bear.. on us. Cheers.".
I can dream, right?

Melting ice caps could cause gravity shift

cybrbeast says...

Those few extra meters of sea level rise due to the gravity shift really won't mean that much in the scheme of things when you consider that there's already a 70m rise due to the melting of Antarctica.

wait wait.. WTF?!?! (Eia Talk Post)

kronosposeidon says...

I'd like to say that Ms. Palin has no real chance in 2012, but then we just had Forrest Gump leave the White House in January, so anything's possible, I suppose.

See, here's the problem with your idea: There's nowhere to run. She's stupid enough to wreck the entire planet in a week. Even Antarctica's not safe. She'll nuke it just to cover all the bases. Then again, the balmy shores of the Ross Sea might be nice afterwards.

Real Time - Seth MacFarlane on the atheist movement

rottenseed says...

Do you think there was a movement of people that promoted the heliocentric view of our solar system? Other than the scientists that were involved, no, not really. Strangely enough, religion hindered the progress of that idea. Then people became more educated and woke up and questioning religion became more commonplace. Then religion got "smart" and found new ways of warping reality by sweeping their old world views that we now know are false under the carpet. People got dumb with the capitalization of higher education (or education in general) and here we are...wondering when people are going to grow up, mentally.

People really believe in a magic man in the sky, not in the clouds anymore, though. Because people have been on airplanes. And they believe in a very bad, bad man with all the bad people under the Earth. I don't know if that means in China or the core of the Earth, or maybe longitudinally in Antarctica. But now people say maybe these things exist in "different dimensions". An idea brought to us by scientific hypothesis. The same hypotheses that lead to the theory of evolution, the theory that they deny. None of it makes sense.

Yes, I agree, what the Hell IS up with the game industry and Africa?

Because we already done all them other places:
Germany, Ukraine, New York City, LA, The Blue Mosque, Hell: First-person shooters
Middle Earth, a lot of places roughly modeled after medieval Europe, radioactive wastelands: role playing games.
The 9th level of hell, a godless place seen as an unending sea of child molesters and furries: Peggle.
So Africa was all we had left over. And Antarctica. But who wants endless random encounters with Leopard Seals and bored NOAA meteorologists?

Gunship 2000 also had an expansion where you flew choppers in Antarctica. Ah white-outs. Awesome.

The One Percent - Full Documentary

poolcleaner says...

If I were part of the one percent, I would do things like produce movies and video games, sponsor MMA fighters and comedians, and/or melt the icy shores of Antarctica to free the eldritch gods I serve.
