Beau schools on schooling: why 'FREE' scares Biff & Babs

spawnflagger says...

I think there should be free Community College for anyone that wants to go, but I also think college isn't for everyone, and Trade schools should also be free (I've seen plenty of plumbers that charge hourly rates more than lawyers).

As far as other colleges, there should be merit scholarships for anyone who does well at Community College can transfer to those for years 3 & 4.

I had a merit-based scholarship for my undergrad, but it was conditioned on maintaining a 3.0 GPA (B average or higher). If it went under 3.0 for two semesters, scholarship gone. Also required finishing in 4 years, so I had to take 15-18 credits every semester. I also worked part-time during semester and full-time in summers to pay down the loans (that the grants & scholarship didn't cover), so graduated debt free. I also can see I'm an exception rather than the norm.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone getting higher education. I also think some people who drop out when they are 18-22 years old, could go instead when they are older and more mature and totally succeed, so don't force it immediately after high school. Part of that is pressure from being allowed on your parents health insurance if you're in school up to a certain age... universal health care coverage (public option) would fix that and should be a higher priority than universal college. I voted for Bernie.

I totally agree with what he is saying, and am very glad that people are saying it.

...That being said, is it hopelessly shallow to wish that the person making the argument looked just a little bit less like the Crypt Keeper? Sex sells, man. I just don't see any 19-22 year old kid that has been sheltered enough to buy into SJW stuff listening to this guy. Unfortunate, but there it is.

Tired Of Driving

eric3579 says...

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 22-year-old Jasmine Lacey of San Bernardino, was taken to a hospital for “a non injury-related reason” before CHP officers arrived on scene, the CHP said.

“(Lacey) was later contacted and identified at St. Jude Medical Center facility and, after investigation of the traffic collision, was arrested for DUI,” a CHP officer said.

But Lacey was released from custody early Saturday due to insufficient evidence to support a criminal complaint, according to Los Angeles County booking records.

Asimov on Global Warming 25 years ago

deathcow says...

Little known fact but Asimov was cloned on the day of his death, and his clone is now 22 years old. The Asimov foundation payed to recreate (with pretty fair integrity) his entire upbringing, location by location and school by school. Just like his predecessor, the new Isaac is finishing his degree in chemistry over the next three years and is taking an interest to writing.

Jack Nicholson Interrupts Jennifer Lawrence Interview

Trancecoach says...

She's 22 years old. I'm guessing she's a lot more choices to make before she gets "spoiled" or loses herself in the adoration. I'll be watching how closely, for example, she holds fast to her beliefs and convictions, as suggested by her selection of projects (such as Winters Bone and Silver Linings, which both dealt pretty directly with mental illness).

FlowersInHisHair said:

I'm glad she sees the ridiculous side of it all. She reacts to Jack like we all would - just gobsmacked at seeing a famous person. This stage of her career is going to be very interesting for her - she's won the top acting award while still so young, goofy quirky and honest and just herself, so she's going to be very aware of how her life is going to change. Somehow I don't think she's the type to let it all go to her head and spoil her.

Police officer deals with open carry activist

MarineGunrock says...

Fuck, that mentality scares me.

As a former combat arms Marine, I've had countless hours behind the butt of an assault rifle and I still don't think I could have really done shit in a situation like Aurora. If I had a clear shot, sure, that's easy enough as long as I'm not shot first. But when you have people running around and screaming (not to mention the fucking smoke screen) I'd be very hesitant about returning fire.

Compare that to some 22 year old thinking he's Billy Badass who took a 4-hour concealed carry permit class. Suddenly he's fucking Rambo and thinks he can save the world. Never once do these idiots think about ANY of the details.

Couple of Ayn Rand loving freedom fighters. If we only these guys were at that Batman screening I'm sure they would have handled the situation well.

Fox 12 Reporter to Occupy Portland: "I am One of You"

There is definitely a lot of truth to that. My dad I was told was mostly a C student at a mediocre university ended up a CEO for 30+ years.

I couldnt say that I was much better but what I studied was art, haha. Ive been stuck getting paid salaries that while are more than the national average really arent shit for where I live for the last decade. The amount of research and creative process I have to go through daily for shit like the latest screamo band on Epitaph youd think Id have a PHD in marketing. All of these assholes need their art but they refuse to pay. If only I had a masters degree it would mean I would be more likely to get a job to hang pictures on a wall and sip wine all day or teach Art History from a 40 page volume while shagging the 22 year old babes. Bastards.

While those who went to decent universities and received their BAs will still find it incredibly difficult to find a job. At this point it seems only possible to receive a fair and decent job if one has a masters degree or higher... and more than likely most working class families can not afford that or if they do they are plunged into the debt for life system.

My friend who was untalented and mediocre in every way had a job offer for $80k when he completed his undergrad.
Here's the trick: unlike most of my friends (and myself), he majored in something that society finds valuable enough that it's willing to pay for: accounting.
We should be clear what we're talking about when we say there are problems with unemployment: people don't want to work hard at jobs that the economy actually needs.

Woman gets beaten in McDonald's and has a seizure

probie says...

"Police said a 14-year-old girl has been charged as a juvenile for the assault while charges were pending against an 18-year-old woman. It seems that the fight was over “using a bathroom”. Sadly this could get messy also for the victim, legally. The Baltimore Legislature recently shot down a “bathroom bill” which would have given transgender people the right to choose which bathroom they would like to use.

If this is a case of a 22 year old man entering a bathroom while a 14 year old girl was using it – get ready for a legal showdown. "

Obama Speaks Candidly on Unknown Open Mic

MaxWilder says...

>> ^My_design:

This is the exact problem with thinking today, we don't allow kids to grow up. We have mothers calling in to their child's employer because he dared to give a negative review. We have employees that feel they are entitled to the same pay rate as their manager because they work 40 hours a week. Loving parents protecting their child?! Your child is 27! He/she isn't a child they're an adult! If they have a handicap that prevents them from being able to work and provide for themselves then they should be able to retain coverage. Outside of that the best and only reason I could see paying $3600 a year per enrolled "Adult/Child" would be if the current uninsured medical expenses for 19-27 year olds drastically outweighed the costs for the new program. But I haven't seen any statistics relating to that. Yes 30% of 19-27 year old adults do not have insurance. But how much is that fact costing us each year and how much would it cost us each year if we insured each and every one of them?
The $3600 is a government estimate for 2013, and since the government does their estimating with chickens pecking at player pianos I sincerely doubt the costs will be in line.
If the premiums are being paid anyway why don't the parents just pay for their kids insurance?
I fully expect that if Obamacare goes into effect that I will lose my employer provided insurance. If by some act of God I do not lose my coverage then I fully expect that my rates will drastically increase and my family coverage plan will become even more expensive as people load on their precious 22 year old "kids" to the program. So this means that my family will pay even more for my daughters insurance because someone else can't put a foot of common sense up their kids ass.
>> ^bareboards2:
You do understand that insurance premiums are being paid, don't you?
This isn't a freebie giveaway. It is allowing loving parents to protect their children.
What the hell is wrong with you?

>> ^My_design:
Maybe since you can now cover a child under healthcare until 27 we should change the legal drinking age to 27 as well. How about claiming them as an exemption on taxes until 27 and being considered underage inregards to sexual relationships until 27 as well.

You think allowing family members to be covered by your health insurance is coddling?? Are you also expecting families to kick their college graduates out of the house upon graduation? How about giving them a few years to find a good job with benefits before you disown them? Seems a bit more humane. Those jobs aren't as easy to find as they used to be.

You also said you expect to lose your coverage due to "Obamacare". Really? I'd love to hear how you figure that will happen.
