Yeah, you're probably right (yet again). It's probably wise to wait a while...you don't want to be labelled a troublemaker your very first week here.

Well, it'd be nice if it did.

And I guess there's not going to any stopping me from posting political videos later on. I am of the mindset that strong opposition really only makes for a good challenge, and if the discussion is carried out correctly and I am proven wrong, that can be quite fun as well!

...I'm usually right, though.

However, I feel that there are many interesting discussions outside the realm of politics that are equally worthy of mention, and I think I'll be focusing on those ones for now.

Your comment(s) certainly got my attention, as well as many others, judging from the 1,000 + profile views you've already had. Usually people lurk for a while before leaving a comment or posting a video. It's really cool when someone new starts with a bang!

That's the thing with sites like youtube...trolls aren't afraid to go on a downvoting spree because they have no fear of being caught. That doesn't happen here...not with the videos or the comments. It's a bannable offense. When something is downvoted, it is most likely because they truly did not like it.

Thanks again!

And it was my very first comment, too, so it speaks to both my inner neat-freak and my inner attention-whore that my entrance into the community of VideoSift was so properly dramatic.

Oh, and yes, I did notice that! I quite like that feature, because I find that transparency makes such functions less likely to be used like weapons. Even though you might not always know why something was down- or upvoted, VideoSift at least lets you know who it was. This, in turn, can tell you whether the points, be they negative or positive, were deserved.

The benefit that springs to mind is that it'll become easier to see if someone honestly agrees or disagrees with you, or if they are merely acting out of a private grudge ...which often tends to happen on sites with similar features, but no transparency.

TL;DR: I like to feature too.

Please don't be afraid to post your political videos. As you said, they do generate some interesting discussion. Of course you'll run the risk of some strong opposition, but I'd much rather see videos on this site that get people talking than ones that are too "safe". That's just my opinion though...I like to rock the boat sometimes...it's fun.

After you lose your "P", you can post 3 videos at a time...I think your first video is going to sift easily, so I guess I'll be seeing more from you very soon.

Thanks! I also favour the science/educational stuff, and especially for a site like VS where you're supposed to sieve out the crème de la crème of the video clips on the internet. I mean, even though I may have political leanings (though I'm NEVER partisan), politics is inherently subjective and inherently inflammatory, and while that can create some very interesting discussions, it follows that it also carries inherent risks.

Science, on the other hand, is impartial and equally beneficial to everybody - whether they know it or not.

I'm starting to really want to get that P out of the way, though. I've already found some interesting stuff that I'm looking forward to sifting!

This VideoSift stuff is... well, a lot more fun than I would've thought.

pumkinandstorm says...

Congratulations on your "applauded comment"!!! That means your comment got at least 15 upvotes!! It's quite an achievement - especially since you've only been here for less than a week! In the whole time I've been here I think I've only had 9 of those.

Something you might not be aware of that you might find interesting...if you would like to know which members upvoted or downvoted a comment, you just go to the bottom of the message box where it has the number of comment upvotes/downvotes and you hover your mouse over the arrow beside the number, you will then see the names appear. I really like that feature.

pumkinandstorm says...

It's a fantastic first submission! I love those minutephysics ones! My personal favorite videos are science/educational ones. Oh, and don't forget to upvote your own submissions right after posting them - I noticed you hadn't voted for it yet.

It is very hard to find videos that haven't been posted already and that aren't duplicates of videos that are already on the site...I try to look for newer ones, but many times they are a repost of an existing video...it's not such a big deal though as the votes from the "dupe" go to the original video poster. After a while it gets easier to find things - you'll see.

Hey there!

So, I just made my first contribution. Just a short, educational clip, but I hope people will find it interesting.

Here it is: http://videosift.com/video/Do-We-Expand-With-The-Universe.

It's... pretty hard to find something interesting that hasn't already been uploaded, though. Like, whoa. I am in awe of the sheer amount of awesome clips you've managed to sift already.

Fixed!

FYI, the mini-probationary period is a week. : )

Thanks to you and @pumkinandstorm for helping to bring this bug to light!

Procrastinatron said:

Nope, there's no checkbox there unless I'm editing the message. And really, I've only had this account for about four days, and I would be surprised if the mini-probationary period was even shorter than that.

lucky760 says...

That's exactly right.

Or can you now see the private checkbox when you post a new comment? I don't recall off the top of my head how long it takes before you're supposed to be allowed to use it.

Procrastinatron said:

Good to know. In other words, the true glitch is the fact that I can edit comments to be private.

lucky760 says...

Yep, for a certain amount of time when you're a brand spanking new member you can't submit private comments because spammers used to sign up and start private spamming other member profiles.

pumkinandstorm said:

How interesting. It must be a bug...I can't imagine a probie wouldn't be able to write private messages like the rest of us.

@lucky760 can you please look into this??

Procrastinatron said:

Thanks, and actually, I didn't know that at all! However, I can't seem to find a box to tick for privacy. Sarcasm, yes, but not privacy.

Now, I haven't found anything about probies not being deserving of privacy in the rules, so I'm guessing it's just a glitch of some sort.

Well, I s'pose all that's left is to somehow try and find a clip worth sifting.

*EDIT* It seems to work when I edit the message.

eric3579 says...

WELCOME!
Thanks for taking the plunge from lurker to sift member. I see you've jump right in with something to say right out the gate. That's Awesome! If you ever have a questions about anything sift, id be happy to try and answer them or at least point you in the right direction. Anyway just wanted to say welcome and it's good to have you on board

edit
haha i now see pumkinandstorm sent you the same basic msg.

pumkinandstorm says...

I'm watching you Procrastinatron. Don't disappoint me.

By the way, if you have any questions about anything here, please ask. You've probably learned quite a bit from your years of lurking, but if I can help in any way, I really would be happy to.

Procrastinatron said:

Well, looking at some of the MASSIVE walls of texts I've encountered since I created my account just three days ago, I feel pretty limited already. If someone makes your popcorn grow cold, it's unlikely to be me.

I'll keep trying, though.

pumkinandstorm says...

You do fit right in. I don't know what took you so long to take the plunge!

I like the unlimited characters as well! There's probably a cut off at some point. I dont know for sure since I've never written THAT much before...hey, there's a challenge for you...keep writing until you get cut off.

Procrastinatron said:

Again, thanks.

And really, it's mostly because videosift somehow seems to lend itself especially well to intelligent conversation. Most members seem to be adults who, even if they sometimes have strong ideological leanings, don't seem to be TOO stupid. On average, at least. Also, no limits on the amount of characters, and... that helps. So much. So very, very much.
