A tiny pet bunny rabbit named Pipkin is sleeping and dreaming about eating an apple. He is a free roam rabbit who likes dreaming about eating, digging, and running. When he is dreaming and you put food near him, he starts to lick his lips and eat the food in his dream.
We thought for sure that when we put the apple near the sleeping rabbit, he woke up. However, we realized the rabbit did not wake up. We left the apple near the rabbit for a minute, then decided to give it to him when he woke up, so we picked the apple back up again. (We didn't want to walk away and have the rabbit wake up and eat the entire apple all at once.) As soon as we picked up the apple, the rabbit jerked awake!
The human holding the apple was distracted, and the rabbit scrambled around looking for the apple. The rabbit runs around all crazy like this when he smells a fruit. The rabbit then stood up on his hind legs. The rabbit does this when he is looking for food or attention. The rabbit likes standing up on his back legs. Most times the rabbit has perfect balance, but once in a great awhile he loses his balance and totters over backwards, like he does here. The rabbit falls over, but quickly jumps back up and eats some apple. The hungry rabbit even tries to pull it out of the human's hand, the ravenous beast!
We're often asked do rabbits do sleep with their eyes open? Yes, sometimes rabbits do! :)
When Pipkin rabbit really starts dreaming, like REM sleep, the rabbit tilts his head back all of the way, like you saw at the beginning. The rabbit will then start to run. Then, when we put the apple down next to his nose, the rabbit starts to chew, or to eat something - almost like the rabbit ran over to the delicious apple in his dream and starting eating.
