triple j Road Trip Relay: the highlights

Every year as the mercury rises Australians hit the highways to travel to music festivals, drive back home or seek out adventure. In Summer 2012/13 they signed up to be part of something special.

It started with a simple call-out to triple j's audience "on the road this summer?". More than 2,000 travellers responded. They Instagramed their journeys, shot photos and video stories and some captured time-lapse of the highway -- more than 16,600km in total. This footage forms the backdrop for their stories and adventures which ABC Open has hand-picked so you can explore the best that Australia has to offer.

No one has managed to capture an entire continent like this before. The scale of the Road Trip Relay in terms of kilometres covered, stories submitted and people participating sets this project apart.We salute triple j's intrepid listeners who battled bushfires, flooding rains and broken-down cars to make the Road Trip Relay possible. ABC Open and triple j have been amazed by the creativity and beauty of the contributions. The stories shared on the relay embody the joy of being young, free and on the road with your friends.
