Late Night host Seth Myers shamed GOP presidential contender Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for opportunistically attacking Syrian refugees seeking asylum in the U.S as violent radicals by reminding him that he once proudly described his dad fighting alongside Fidel Castro as a teen.

In interviews this week, Cruz defended his anti-immigration stance in light of the fact that his father also came to the country as a refugee.

“If my father were part of a theocratic and political movement like radical Islamism that promotes murdering anyone who doesn’t share your extreme faith or forcibly converting them, then it would make perfect sense,” Cruz stated.

“That’s right. When Ted Cruz’s father came here from Cuba in the 1950’s, the closest equivalent to a movement using violence to achieve it’s goal would have been Communism,” Meyers explained.

“And it’s not like Cruz has ever acknowledged his father used violence to fight for a Communist leader like, say Fidel Castro. I would remember something like that,” Meyers added sarcastically before rolling a clip of an interview he did with the candidate eight months ago.

“He started fighting when he was fourteen,” Cruz said of his father when speaking with Meyers in March.”He spent four years fighting, was throwing Molotov cocktails, I mean he was fighting alongside Castro.”

“Okay, okay,” a smirking Meyers said. “Sometimes I drift off. Sometimes I’ve been known to zone out.”
