Witness - The Qat Barons of Sheffield

Qat is s a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It contains the alkaloid cathinone, an amphetamine like stimulant which causes excitement, euphoria and mild hallucination. The leaf is traditionally chewed to release its intoxicating effects. In Yemen qat is extremely popular - 60% of the males and 35% of the females are regular users who chew daily for long periods of their life. Although banned in many countries, qat is not a controlled substance in the United Kingdom. Witness explores the use of qat by the Yemeni population in Sheffield, North England.
