It was taped May 1984, aired in June 1984. Michael Larson, an unemployed ice cream truck driver of Lebanon, OH would take some learned knowledge to the board, against Ed Long and Janie Litras (now known as Janie Litras-Dakan). darkrowanFor what it's worth Larson didn't cheat insomuch as he memorized patterns. At the time, there were only 5 sequences used in the game (think about how powerful computers were back in the 80s to see why). He memorized this sequences from studying the game he taped on his VCR. CBS just didn't guess that anyone in there right mind would have the time to catch and memorize those patterns.
They later changed and added more patterns to keep from getting screwed again.
TymbrwulfSo is he unemployed or is he an ice cream truck driver?
He's an innovator for memorizing those patterns. Kudos to him on that. He had quite a run of bad luck afterwards, unfortunately.

I wouldn't call getting busted for getting involved with an illegal scheme to sell part of a nationwide lottery "bad luck" lol. More like "dumb decisions."
ForgedReality says...Yeah, what's up with the sad ending?
antI wonder how long it took to finish this!
residuenot true! He was a professional scam artist. He was NOT ice cream truck driver. He also took his winnings and used them for further get rich quick schemes and was heavily pursued by the FBI later for his involvement in pyramid scams.
blankfistHe died in 1999 at the age of 49, so that would mean he was 34 in this video. Goddamn those are some bad genes.

He died in 1999 at age 49 !! That makes him 34 at the time of this video. He must have been living a hard lifestyle. Or the facts of this story are garbled up. I bet he is alive and sailing the Bahamas with his 110,000 of 1984 dollars.
gwiz665I'm an unemployed porn star / astronaut / billionaire playboy.

Kids these days. Clowns and magicians don't do it for them any longer, they're only happy if they get a porn star astronaut.
TrancecoachPerhaps he shouldn't have pressed his luck.

eventualentropy says...I love the happy music overlayed on top of the description of his divorce, bankruptcy, and death of throat cancer. Something is funny about that especially combined with the bad english (futurely?)
MandtisSome more info here, nice history!

Tymbrwulf@Unsung_Hero, quote fucked up!

Actually, that's exactly what I'd call bad luck. If he'd have good luck he wouldn't have gotten caught.
Unsung_Hero says...Haha, indeed that is true Tymbrwulf!
dagI love how he's clapping before he even sees the result.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with what he did to win on this show, but he was a classic grifter - from the sound of his other exploits.
wormwood"This American Life" did a great story on this guy.
