Tom Green Invents Planking In 1994

OTTAWA -- Canadian comedian Tom Green is standing up to take credit for planking, an Internet-fuelled stunt in which people lie down in public places.

Green, long prone to stealing the media spotlight, posted a video on his website this week from 1994.

It shows him lying down on an Ottawa sidewalk in a clip that reportedly aired on MuchMusic when he was with his former rap group, Organized Rhyme.

Green, dressed in light brown trench coat and hat, lies motionless as people first walk past, then start to mill around him.

The comedian, known for his prank humour, MTV show, movie roles, and high-profile battle with testicular cancer, told CNN the stunt was meant to test people's reaction to seeing someone prone on the sidewalk.

He said he recently learned of the popularity of planking and an online comment pointed out his earlier work, which he called "dead guy."
