"Three Point Landing" Compilation

As stated in YouTube comments, I think Trinity from "The Matrix" is the winner by a mile here.

Cool compilation of total cliche. I really hate that pose. It's super cliched and over used, and worse are the instances where they hold that pose for like 5 minutes before looking up for even more "dramatic effect". It irks me as an animator as much as the Wilhelm Scream must irk a lot of sound designers (although can't be that many with the amount that still choose to use it)... which also irks me <_<

Sorry, /end rant

Jinxsays...

real ninjas roll.

but then again, really real ninjas have only been seen by those with a life expectancy measured in seconds.

also, survivors of realllly long falls typically hit the ground lying flat (apparently). You know, so all the bones in your legs don't suddenly end up trying to occupy the same space as your liver, intestines, lungs, heart...all that shit that kinda keeps you alive basically.

I was also told once that even in short falls often somebody who is drunk or unconscious comes away with less injuries than somebody who is alert and awake, altho I think on balance I'd rather break and arm or a wrist than fall on my head.

Anyway. Thats my quota of stuff I have heard thats probably complete bullshit passed onto the next guy. Its probably all true. Probably.

Watched a show documenting a tornado sucking a guy out of his house and him surviving being throw like a mile or two away with bruises and scraps, no broken bones that I recall and no major injuries. Supposedly he walked home.

Their answer for him surviving was that he was knocked out as soon as the tornado got a hold of him, something in the house bashed him in the head and knocked him out or whatever.

Now their reason for him being basically unharmed is that because he was young and knocked out, his tendons and musculature weren't holding his bones rigid like you would when you fell by instinct. And since he was young his bones had flexibility, like bones are meant to, they will flex instead of break when there's nothing holding them rigid or fixed.

So he hit and rolled and rolled but because he was out cold he never reacted to the force and tried to control yourself by holding yourself rigid and trying to grab or hold to stop yourself.

So, I'd say what you've heard is probably true. And I don't think anyone would be able to survive unscathed like that guy did if they were alert when it happened...because you would react to the pain and force of the blows...especially if you were unable to see due to the crap blowing around.

I'm an animator and I have always hated this stupid cliched landing. It's so posey and pro wrestling style. Trinity's version looks really stupid and was the first sign that the Matrix sequels were going to be slightly off key.

My question then: can anybody provide a video/image-link to a "proper" super-hero landing?
Let's say the conditions are as follows:

A) you need to be mobile afterwards
B) you are holding a potentially breakable/stabby/shooty device
OPTIONAL C) You are jumping/falling from a certain height

Try to give conditions for that landing to succeed for bonus points. Let's also say bonus points for style.

I immediately get a image of parcour-style stuff...

I dont have evidence from a movie or w/e, but a good landing should look something like this: http://www.monkeysee.com/play/11426-parkour-landing-and-rolling

The idea is you want you legs to absorb some of the force, but also transfer some into the roll. You want to distribute the energy of the fall over the longest period of time (or space - see http://www.ehow.com/video_2360720_break-fall-jujutsu.html). I think the reason the 3 point landing is so bad is also the reason it "looks cool" - its a big impact entrance, it dents the pavement and creates a little shockwave. Unfortunately in real life all reactions have equal and opposite reactions...

^ I do 3 point landings because my right leg is fucked up. Unfortunately I always look cliche when I jump off shit. Also, although parkour does the proper distribution, 3 point landings are more natural without the training to do so. Therefore, although the 3 point landing isn't the best method, it's the most natural so I can't see this as any more cliche than having a parry in a sword fight.

Criticism of this is pretty *shrug* worthy.

I like this landing.

Pro-tip:When the concrete craters around the person/character leaving them unharmed, 'real world physics' has fucking nothing to do with the fantasy world they exist in... = P

It's just a flashy way to arrive for someone unconcerned with stealth (because a large crater making explosions is typically hard to cover up. Although in Spiderman's case, landing on 3 appendages is closer to the 8 most normal spiders would employ when jumping/landing.

Shouldn't Spiderman land on all 4 limbs then....?

dannym3141says...

So to get this straight, a three point landing is when you land directly on one leg and one WRIST, whilst using your other LEG to take what energy it can out of the equation; which isn't much, as it's splayed to the side and touching the corner of the boot only.

Your leg is far more sturdy than your wrist, if you want to add a third point then make it in the form of your hand to one side perhaps, not that it's gonna do much.

I thought a three point landing was only a film concept for 'coolness', is that not correct?

The request was for "proper super-hero landing" not real world. I also merely admited I liked it. Something about a nano-tech reinforced belly flop from 25 stories speaks to me.

Heh, fair point, although he does have to keep one arm free for rapid fire web blasting and generally looking cool. =)

It wasn't a specific critique of your post, I just find it funny how the conversation surrounding things like this inevitably drifts to how it's impractical because of real world limitations... ; )

My personal fave is the first one (from the Animatrix).
