He used a device to sound a tone over the line to play his messages... I've never seen or heard of that before.

xax, in this case, his answering machine probably DID cost a crap load of money. These days machines respond to touch tones because all phones are touch tone, but back then many wernt, so instead you get a device that plays the tones. If you didn't realize, touch phones are actually just a tone generator. Calls are made with the tones (as well as automated selections from services over the phone). I had a pda program that would dial a contact in my address book by holding the receiver end up to the speaker.
