A mythical figure in the Peruvian struggle for independence, Túpac Amaru II (José Gabriel Condorcanqui) lead an unsuccessful indigenous uprising in 1780 against the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. He was initially sentenced to be dismembered by having four horses pull out his limbs, an action they were not able to accomplish.

United States rapper Tupac Amaru Shakur was named after him.
