Reason #147 to be scared of clowns...

Those kids may need therapy.

Crude funniness, but despicable. Its always the man hurting himself. Lets see a female in clown suit impale her foot while 2 men just sit on the couch looking at her talking about walmart and all the money they saved. Its the men that are portrayed as dumb, childlike, moronic and are always getting hurt.

I don't necessarily find it despicable but I have noticed this as well. Also, men are the gluttons in Pepto Bismol ads. Women are never the ones sent to the doghouse, never have to buy things to please (or make up to) their partners. Also, when have you ever seen a man in a paper towel commercial actually use one instead of watching his wife clean up the (his) mess. Oh well, ads are still full of stereotypes, what can you do?

For most of the examples you mention, I'm not sure that it's just simple stereotypes. More likely it's demographic research. Men suffer more heartburn, women buy the paper towels etc etc.>> ^Samaelsmith:

Actually, men don't watch commercials, REAL men run into the store, buy whatever's closest to the exit, then run out.

Probably something to do with being more secure in ourselves due to our higher pay, better promotion prospects, and a body with minimal - and largely externalised modifications for reproduction, which can probably be construed as us victimising the fairer sex via soaking up opportunities.

Objectively speaking, this is a very funny video. I just notice this slant to advertising too much now. If the clown was some nondescript clown, that wouldn't have caught my attention. "Its time for daddy to make some funny". That's when it stung me.

Honesty, I think it's just that men getting hurt is inherently funnier than women getting hurt. If it were a woman in this ad howling in pain, you'd probably be just as likely to feel bad for her than laugh. I think it's hard-wired in us, especially for guys I guess, to have a more visceral reaction when we see a woman in pain (probably because, from a purely evolutionary standpoint, women are to be protected while other guys are the competition). I think this is the same reason why women tend to be the victims in horror movies -- because it elicits more of a reaction from the viewer, and thus makes for a more effective film.

Could be wrong, but perhaps part of it is kids love hurting men. Kids of either gender will fight with there fathers and fathers will pay act being hurt for them. Kids don't for the most part interact with women that way. When we see a woman hurt, most people will wince, but seeing a man hurt in a non-life threatening will usually elicit a smirk at least. I think that the advertisers are just capitalizing on a preexisting tendency in people rather than creating some new cultural belief that men are just big ol sack of crap clowns.

EDIT: or I guess I could have just said "Yeah Sarzy said" if I'd bothered to read his post before replying.

And men don't look nearly as good topless or in the shower.
