I hope this is good as well, but I can't help but cringe at those shots so obviously made for the 3D version of the movie. It's just so damn gimmicky.

This is just a trailer and here's how many I could count:

00:04 - fire breather
00:21 - hat tossing
00:36 - floating objects
01:03 - the flying little creature
01:18 - the snapping plants
01:29 - the flying monkeys

I personally don't mind the 3D when done properly, but these shots are so made-for-3d that it becomes obnoxious.

I love James Franco but this looks like yet another film filled to bursting with visual detail but lacking any life. CGI is awesome but when it's overused it's horrid. Good visuals are as much about what you don't see than what you do.

Saw an interview the Rachel Weisz on The Daily Show a while ago when she was talking about filming this at the time. Apparently they filmed it in Detroit. Which (of course) is a gorgeous magical city. </sarcasm>

Exactly. Whenever I watch a Bergman on Hitchcock film the slow still shots are some times the most fantastical shots. People like Cronenberg knew when to use special effects to really capture the horror in perception changing & human body changing.

That was truer in the times when they showed you less of the alien monster because it was just a guy dressed as an octopus.

total meh - the black and white 4x3 to colour 16x9 was so clichéd it hurt

Perhaps some MPEG compression missing keyframes, followed by a huge "buffering" text would be more modern ?

PalmliX says...

True enough but I kind of feel that a 3D model is our generations version of the guy dressed in a suit. It's just as obviously fake for today's FX savvy movie goers. Except now they just show the entire 'octopus' on screen for minutes at a time and leave very little to the imagination. >> ^FlowersInHisHair:

i'm not sure that actors interacting with green screens and CGI will ever make a truly GREAT film.
there's just too much disconnect there to carry any real emotional weight.

but it looks like a tasty 3d treat.

QFT

I'm still waiting for a 3d movie to actually match Avatar. Nothing popping out of the screen, just 3d used as it should be, to create depth to enhance the movie going experience. I'm hoping The Hobbit is that movie, after all Weta Digital does the best CG in the world.

Meh, since I saw Wicked, I'm not really sure I want to see what Disney has to offer...

Exactly. I will have a hard time accepting Elpheba as a truly evil character now!

FlowersInHisHair says...

Come on. If there's ONE genre of films that can use that trope legitimately, it's Oz, right?
