Making lichtenberg figures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichtenberg_figure involves irradiating a piece of (electrically insulating) plastic with MeV energy electrons from a particle accelerator and then hammering a nail into the side of the plastic to release the trapped electric charge all at once, forming a fast discharge and destruction of the plastic in beautiful fractal patterns.
