I don't see what this has to do with patents. Patents are a completely reasonable way to allow someone to recover the cost of R&D (and yes, it's pretty high).

The problem is not patents, it's abuse of the patent system and misleading studies, leading to practices such as "evergreening".

And people still argue that patents in their current form are neccessary to cover the cost of R&D...

Scrubs is the most accurate portrayal of medicine on television ever. Mainly because they deal with the mundane things. Not every diagnosis is ebola, rabies or porphyria *cough* House *cough*.

They must have some legit medical advisors.

Also, numerous drugs are used off-label. Some are drugs that are widely accepted to work in certain situations, but have such a narrow target population that there is no money in funding a study to prove efficacy/safety. Others are generic drugs that have no financial upside to fund a study (mag sulfate for pre-eclampsia). More concerning are black-label warnings that are not heeded.

Pharma reps also often have a spending quota. You read that write, they HAVE to spend a certain amount of money on dinners etc each month.

They don't care if you are even a doctor in a specialty that could write for their drug.
