Lake Peigneur (disappearing lake)

> How many times have we heard that before?
Think about it though, these guys might not of had a clue what was going on, or how much water this thing could suck down, until they knew the salt mines were being filled, this must have been like "we popped the Earth!"

I was there with a hydrographic survey crew about ten years ago -- we were testing out a new sidescan sonar array. There is some interesting features under the lake, including scores of old tree stumps and "the pit", which is supposedly filled with an oil derrick, barges, etc. The sonar couldn't penetrate the surface of the pit, because of the salinity, however, so we couldn't see much.
