BTW, has he finally stopped wearing backward baseball caps? I hope so, because he's too old for that fratboy look. If he wants to cover up his balding pate the watch cap is a better look. Better yet, just accept your barren scalp and wear nothing.

Can I take this thread way off-topic now, or should I wait for more immature jackasses to show up?

Matthusays...

Ahhh bullshit! Joe Rogan's a fucking faggot.

I really like the way Eminem drew the line in the movie 8 mile. He's battling and he points to the gay guy and says, "He's gay," then points to the douchebag and says, "You're a faggot."

People need to get way over themselves and let these words evolve, since, hate to break it to you, they ain't going away.

Yogisays...

I swear at first glance with his UFC color commentary career and his appearance he looks like such a douchbag. The more I listen to Joe Rogan though the more I think that we'd be cool.

Skeevesays...

I don't care for Joe Rogan, but I completely agree that people need to stop using "gay" or "faggot" as their go-to insult.

I'm the first person to defend free speech and tell people that they don't have to right to not be offended, but there is just no point in using those words. Firstly, it can be very hurtful to homosexuals, and freedom of speech doesn't mean we should just insult people for no reason. Secondly, being gay isn't a bad thing so why should calling someone gay/faggot be an insult? Unless one is very homophobic, a self-hating homosexual, or incredibly insecure about their sexuality, being called that should bother one as much as being called "four-eyes" if one doesn't have glasses.

No, he's not.

Tokokisays...

So, you want to call african-americans "nigger" straight to their face?

>> ^Mcboinkens:

And I'm fine with not using the word faggot as an insult as long as homosexuals are fine with me calling them faggots straight to their face. If you don't want a word to evolve and lose its original meaning that's fine, but then you better be ready to start facing the word in its original meaning.

What makes you say that? He's a great entertainer and from his music he obviously gets satire and irony as well as one of the best rappers there has been in years. There was a real downfall of good rap music till he came out with some ridiculous stuff that was funny and fun. Sure he was as homophobic at times as an ignorant high schooler but he performed with the King of the Queens.

If they're ignorant(and smaller than me) then yes. That's one word that should go back to it's original meaning.

Although blacks have a better case for asking for care in using the word. Homosexuals might have been, and still are, discriminated against, but they weren't fucking enslaved.

I liked this video because he comes up with a logical reason, not based in the emotional cost of others to formulate a conclusion on using the word. The fact that he calls the word ineffective because the intent is always overlooked, is great.

You're comparing apples and oranges. One word meant a bunch of sticks, the other was originally a racist term. One was converted into a hateful term, one has always been. If you take out the evolved context of the word faggot it no longer holds any harm, hence why you should be able to say it to anyone. The word you listed however, has always had racist roots and therefore is an entirely different kind of word. I see what you're trying to say, though. I'm just pointing out that people are becoming way to sensitive to WORDS. Pretty soon we arn't going to be able to call anyone fat, obese, stupid, short, or tall. Instead it will just be "above average body mass" or some other sensitive term. When does it stop? If someone calls me white trash I really couldn't care less about it. It means the other person is either insensitive, jealous, or I've done something to anger them. In any case, I realize it's just a word and move on.
Basically here is my point: What should we call gay people? Homosexuals, gays, faggots? What makes the word faggot worse than homosexual? Connotation. What happens when we stop using the word gay and faggot? Those connotations get shifted onto the word homosexual. Then what? We will need to come up with another word. There will always be jerks and insensitive fools that will use words to hurt people, it's human nature.
I stand by my point earlier in my last post. If we stop using faggot as an insult, then is goes back to simply meaning homosexual, in which case there should be no problem describing someone who is ACTUALLY a homosexual as a faggot. It seems like you misinterpreted what I said as I would call them faggots to their face to mock them, that wouldn't be the case. It would just be another word to describe their lifestyle.

It's not apples to oranges. The bundle of sticks definition is correct, however, the way homosexuals got the name is because they used to use gays as kindling for fire. That's right...they used to burn gay people and treat them as nothing other than fire wood

bmacs27says...

I think the argument is that faggot shouldn't be used as "arbitrary insult," because of its association with homosexuality. It perpetuates the association between "word associated with homosexuality" and "otherwise bad behavior." I think if you want to insult gay people, go ahead and call them faggot. The idea is that you are ineffectively using that word unless you either want to convey hatred of homosexuals, or want to do the thing black people did with "nigger" (i.e. gay people saying "what's up my faggot").

What we need is a defacto, non-descriptive insult, which is not associated with a particular group. I think that word is douche.

MaxWildersays...

@rottenseed - I think you might have the origin of the word wrong. From what I've seen, it's a centuries old insult for a woman, like "baggage". Calling her a bundle of sticks that must be carried around. But there is also the implication of heretics being burned at the stake (fire and faggot).

But wherever it came from, the fact is that everybody knows it is a derogatory word for a homosexual. When you tease a friend by calling him a faggot, you are calling him gay in a sarcastic and pejorative way. As @bmacs27 said, you are perpetuating the concept of homosexuality as a bad thing. That may not be your intention, but that's the way it is. I think the only proper use of the word is toward homophobes who are probably closet gays. For example, Ted Haggard.

Nigger was not originally derogatory. It started as negar, then neggar. It was a variant on negro and, in the US, meant the same thing: a black-skinned person, generally from Africa. In the UK it also included Indians.

It became a racial insult because of how and when it was used.

So, yeah, @Tokoki is, in fact, comparing apples to apples.

Unless you count women. Men calling each other douche bag is exactly like men going around calling each other pussies. It's the association with vulgar womanliness that's supposed to be insulting. I could see both terms irritating women who want to be respected.

It really is hard to think a word that is a personal insult but doesn't insult a group. Not jerk either, masturbators don't deserve that sort of scorn, it's natural. Maybe ass? Even if the noble donkey does not get our meaning, doesn't that just make it more unfair and mean spirited? Poor stupid bastards.

I give up.

MilkmanDansays...

It is interesting to me that profanity needs to move on and change much faster than run-of-the-mill language, and also that individual profanity words tend to have a much more fluid nuance of meaning to an individual than standard language.

For me personally, I don't like the use of "gay" or "faggot" as a general-purpose "I don't like that guy" insult. I'm not exactly offended by it, but it does seem ineffective or at least inefficient considering the likelihood of being misinterpreted if one uses it as just a general insult.

I am also not very big on "douche" / "douchbag", although it is much less likely that those will be misinterpreted. Instead, I have a stubborn fondness for "asshole" (at least, for using the word as an insult). Calling someone an asshole seems very clear and unlikely to be misinterpreted to me, but I think that it is simply lacking in magnitude due to the faster rate of change in profanity; it simply isn't profane enough anymore.

Faggot, Douche, Cunt, Pussie etc all have one thing in common - they all refer to what heterosexual males fear and detest the most:

weakness.

All of those terms in one way or another refer to aspects of the female persona, be it physical or psychological. Inherent to that notion is the knowledge that women are weaker than men and traditionally dependent on them for protection. To be physically or emotionally dependent on anyone is to be a failure in the psyche of the heterosexual male.

That seems to me to be a base instinct, and can only be overcome with rational thought and secular humanistic values.>> ^entr0py:
