Maybe broadcasting his complete lack of self-esteem isn't such a smart strategy. Self deprecation might be good armour against insults but I think ultimately its still a barrier to building any sort of relationship. Pity isn't the foundation of friendship and its harmful to his confidence soo.... Be honest with yourself but smile at strangers even when you don't feel like smiling cos 9/10 they smile back.
Anyway, I'm sure they'll be plenty of girls who will pity fuck and/or take on as a "project"... ;3
