How the BBC shot tracking timelapse shots for "Plants"

For the "Plants" episode of their show "Life", the folks at BBC ended up constructing what must be one of the most elaborate time-lapse shots ever made, using multiple tracking shots of vegetation, in bluescreen studio and outdoors.

It is impressive, yes... but it's doing that thing I dislike in shows that are presenting themselves as a factual show. And that's presenting effects as reality.

There are elements of reality to it, but it's not actually real now is it?

yes, i'm also very disappointed that these shots are faked
i wonder if the blue planet and planet earth were also faked

I don't see the big deal. The only thing fake about this is the setup and how they filmed each individual plant. There is no cg here, they shot each plant growing NATURALLY over time, it's just that they did them individually.

Sure the film thing is a composite. But you're seeing natural growth over time of many, many plant species at once. It's an excellent piece of work IMO.

I can see how you could say this is going too far, but personally I don't think this is any less acceptable than creating a regular timelapse would be.The essence of the subject remains unchanged. I don't even see why it would be a problem if it were entirely CGI - it's a show illustrating the workings of nature. As long as that goal is accomplished without introducing gross factual errors, I say "good work".
