Germany's Downfall Will Be Facilitated By This Roundabout

Here's a video that someone took over the course of an hour of a roundabout in Erfurt, Germany. After recording the massive, embarrassing confusion that occurred during the hour, our videographer edited it down to the best (worst) two-and-a-half minutes.

(I totally stole Gawker's description and title, because they are perfect.)

This is weird because I feel like I know what they are suppose to be doing better than those who had no idea what they were suppose to be doing when I have no idea what they were suppose to be doing. Does that even make any since?

We don't have roundabouts around here, but isn't there supposed to be some kind of ...thing... in that center circle? Concrete barriers, fountain, small garden, whatever?

We have roundabouts everywhere here... And yes, I think that's the problem here. This one is simply painted on the ground, which makes it almost invisible from a distance. They should create an actual roundabout, and not the line scheme for one.

I have found those to be less of an impediment now that I have my lift kit on my truck...

As for the vid, they are obviously trying to save money and still have a roundabout. Also, if this route allows for semi-trailers (lorries over there), the drivers can't fit that circle. Personally I think its "testing" to see if it'll work better than a "standard" intersection.

I wonder if they will deem the testing to be conclusively positive?

It's stupid. If it gets to a certain size you have to have a centre raised circle that motorists have to drive around. Obviously the signs aren't doing it.

BTW I'm sure saw a guy drive the wrong way up the street.

If you want to facilitate lorries and buses, make it an overbout. Shallow roundabouts that cars and trucks can still pretty much drive over, but prominent enough so that people know to follow correct etiquette for a roundabout intersection.

TheGenksays...

Roundabouts are actually quite common in germany(at least where I live).
And still, there are people who have no clue how they work.
My bet is that there will be some form of obstacle in the middle soon. Or after the daily accident count gets too high^^

Agree with the above - roundabouts are FAR FAR FAR better than traffic lights. Roundabouts are meant to be a way of decereasing congestion. Lights go green on a timer or whatever, but if there's no cars at a particular stop, people are waiting for nothing. And between changes there's significant time where no traffic is crossing. At a roundabout, everyone gets a turn - if traffic is low on one lane then no one waits, and there can more or less be a constant stream of moving cars.

This roundabout's problems are a combination of it not being prominent enough and people not taking it seriously.

There's a roundabout near me ..............with traffic lights on it. Now that's some stupid shit that needs to go. You join the roundabout then sit at lights ON THE ROUNDABOUT. Combine the two and make something with all the disadvantages of both and none of the advantages of either!

Big proponent of roundabouts. Here in Australia we call them "reach-arounds" Make sure if you come for a visit to ask about experiencing the famous Australian reach-arounds.

I definitely will... but if they show me some fucking intersection, I'll be pissed.

Roundabouts might be the dumbest things I have ever seen.

If by "dumbest things I have ever seen" you actually meant "best intersections ever!", then yes, I would have to agree.

But seriously, roundabouts are awesome. Way nicer for driving than traffic lights and stop signs.

What part of Australia do you live in? I've never heard it called anything other than a "roundabout" and I've lived here for 28 years.

I thought it was a pretty good attempt, personally. I honest lol'd.

The problem folks in this clip have is as follows:

In Germany right has right-of-way only in defined areas with a certain speed limit as low as 30kmh. It's used only in "living areas" or near schools etc. Those areas come with "small", standard intersections. Those areas mostly don't have roundabouts. You don't need them because they are there for letting heavy traffic on intersections flow and these areas don't have much traffic. And even if you have roundabouts in 30kmh zones they follow standard right-of-way rules: In a roundabout the "inner" lane has right of way, all around. That means you have to wait if you want to enter the roundabout. The problem as i see it lies in the fact that in this case officials have mixed to concepts for this intersection: They've made it a roundabout but sticked to right has right-of-way. That's VERY unusual (i myself for example have never seen it before this clip). Besides it obiously being a stupid idea (traffic doesn't flow in any way) i guess the main reason for the drivers' strange behaviour is that they are baffled and not used to this mixed concept.

I guess no one will understand my blabbering but i always like to take a shot at practicing my english ;-)

They never have ped crossings at roundabouts here - they are usually place 50 meters back or more, on the incoming roads.>> ^AeroMechanical:

How do roundabouts work in places with lots of pedestrians crossing the street? Do you just keep driving around until the crosswalk is clear?

Lights aren't on a timer. They are on sensors that allow traffic that is there to go. Where do you people live with these timer lights. They might still use them in east bumblefuck but in regular cities it's fine. Also, if you put a roundabout in a major city, the amount of traffic and accidents wouldn't go down and the average blood pressure from assholes ignoring the roundabouts would skyrocket. Then again I live where there is alot of traffic.

Quoting things from Wisc does not help the cause of roundabouts. Pick information from somewhere with more people and I might consider it to have merit. It's like me giving out information on the low amount of tornados in my area (we don't have them) and using the information to make a warning system in Kansas. >> ^dannym3141:

I don't know what wisc is in order to quote it, but the majority of traffic lights around my area are on timers. There are, of course, traffic lights that have sensors to help ease the load on a particular set of lights, but unfortunately that still doesn't overcome the fact that there's large periods where there's no one using the central bit as the lights are changing. I appreciate the irony that you accused me of stating facts that have no evidence (which i didn't), when you then go on to say that adding a roundabout would make things worse! I live in an area where there is a hell of a lot of traffic, and the roundabouts are the easier thing to get out of

I also do not tailor my posts in order to ensure that you specifically give them merit. I didn't quote any facts, i didn't quote anyone or any thing, and i can't understand why you think i'd be giving any kind of parallel to a tornado warning system!

Did you quote the right person? The content and tone of your reply are really strange in reply to what i posted!

Geez, I thought we had poor city planning on the west coast in the United States. This is pretty bad.

Why create a tiny roundabout without massive YIELD notifications in the middle of a four lane intersection -- and with a crosswalk? It's a recipe for disaster. Just put up some stop signs/lights and turn it back into a normal intersection.

The only roundabouts that I know of that work (and even these have some problems) are larger, multi-laned roundabouts with a solid structure/island in the middle to prevent driving straight through it and other similar moving violations due to ignorance/impatience.

We have a decent number of larger roundabouts in California, mostly in south Orange County (as well as the Orange circle, which is more inland) and there's a couple in Long Beach. I've NEVER seen these types of problems. Reminds me of what happens when street lights go out due to a power outage.
