I love quiet brilliance. I really do. Those people in life whom, although outwardly unassuming, are possessed of a vast and as-yet-unproclaimed talent. Passionate... driven in their efforts... they just... get it. And, to get to work alongside people like that? Truly a gift.

So, why do I bring this up, you ask? Because recently, I've been fortunate enough to work with one such person. Nick Navatta.

I met Nick several months back on a speaking engagement at a music industry seminar (I was there as a guest speaker and he was there, god bless him, to create an elaborate whiteboard collage from my ramblings. And let's face it... I can ramble... a lot. :)). Anyway, we kept in touch after that, and when YouTube contacted me in late November to create a holiday video... Nick was my first call. At that point, I'd seen only his cartoon-esque work, but knowing I wanted to do an animated video (rather than your favorite 3-angle-buttercream-wall-behind-me cover treatment :))... I thought it'd be fun to try. Honestly, I had NO IDEA he was such a versatile artist, and what he ended up creating... quite frankly... blows me away. Using only a single canvas... sketched, photographed, and resketched 15 HUNDRED times... he brought my original Christmas song 'Evergreen' to life.

As to the song itself, 'Evergreen' is a co-write with a great songwriter (and good friend) Simone Porter, and we originally wrote it for a FlatStar (Germany's version of American Idol) winner named Fabian Buch. Because Fabian is German, Simone thought it'd be interesting to incorporate imagery from German holiday legend resulting in lines like '10,000 rivers turn to wine' and 'church bells ring out from the sea'... In the end, Fabian didn't wind up recording the song, but as I'd recorded the demo myself (and subsequently fallen in love with Simone's lyrics)... it just felt right to put it on my own album.

In general, I try hard to leave the sharing, liking, retweeting, and forwarding up to you (i.e. - not specifically ASK you to do that, but instead... let you decide for yourself if you feel my work is worthy of that)... but in this case... I could really use your help. :) Nick put a lot of time and effort into this piece, and I'd love to see his work get the recognition it deserves. If you have a free minute to check out the video and possibly send it around to your friends/family... well... that'd be awesome. :) Thank you..."

Gavin
