People don't give those games nearly enough credit. GTA 3 and the many sequels/imitators that followed owe a lot to Carmageddon one and two.

True, it wasn't the first game with that concept -- but it was one of the first to do a really good job of allowing you to drive around wherever you want and cause mayhem in an open, 3D city. It was the first game of its type that I played, but obviously I haven't played every game in existence so it's possible that there was some smaller game that came out before it with similar gameplay.
