Duke Nukem Forever Quicklook (yes it does suck that much)

Wow... it just looks... wow... 14 years and we get this...

Edit: I thought it was worth more to say given the history many of us have with this game. I think the most telling moment is close to the end of the video where they state how much they dislike the game, but that they are glad they played it.

I will be so as well once the price drops a bit on Steam. I assume it will get a bargain price within a month or two.

I'm a middle aged man now, but this game was announced when I was a very avid gamer. I think (like the reviewers) I need some closure after following its development for most over a decade of my life.

I have the game, and finished it already.

It's not exactly a great game, but it's also not terrible. It's ok. BUT... it is duke, after 14 years, which makes it better. Gearbox took a huge gamble with this. They essentially had to tie up all the loose ends and present a game. They did that. I have no regrets over buying this game.

and hopefully if it sells well, it means gearbox will be able to make a new duke nukem game from scratch in the near future.

And anyone playing this on a 360 or PS3 is an idiot. There I said it. The game was made for PC. If it's not a great game, it's even worse on the consoles. Gearbox simply took what 3D Realms left behind and ported it. That's why loading times and texture pop-in is so bad on the console versions.
But I guess they had to maximize the profit on this.

Any professional gaming site/magazine/blog reviewing this not on a PC are completely stupid, and should know better.

Edit: and WTF??? The guy playing HAS to be the worst gamer ever... for crying out loud. How he managed to finish the game in the first place is beyond me, because I seriously don't understand how the person playing isn't playing a game for the first time in his life.

I'm playing this on PC in eyefinity (6088x1200 rez) and everything they talk about is bang on the money even across platforms. Still looks dated, effects are meh, game is boring.

Yep. And despite the decade (and more) of development time as a PC exclusive, it still manages to feel like a half-assed console port, bafflingly enough.

I'm playing the game and enjoying it. First off, these guys clearly are trying to bash the game. I mean, who starts the level by running off the edge of a cliff and then says "see, this sucks". Then picks the scene with the elevator falling, and doesn't even pull the handbrake until the end and wonders why they die. The one guy hasn't even seen the game until his buddy shows him parts and he says "boy this is boring". No shit, it doesnt matter what the game is, if i'm watching someone else play, its going to be boring as all hell.

So the game runs great on my computer. Looks good too. I can't tell you what it looks like on a console, nor do I give a shit about consoles. If you are playing a fps on a console, you're missing out. Anyway, my load times average 3 seconds. I have detected no bugs or buggy play so far. It feels solid to me. I heard people complain that it had no music, but it does. Not so much as to be annoying, kicks in when it should, it gives you clues about when a big fight is coming and ends when you're done. The pacing is a little slow in some areas, but not enough that i was ever bored. There is a lot to look at in the world. Its populated with items and posters and whatnot fairly well. I felt like there was a lot of attention paid to the details in the world. There are a lot of things you can interact with, but i wish there was a higher level of interactivity and a little more in the way of physics on items.

I don't like the fact that you can't go off and explore everywhere, and the "secret areas" I found were simple with maybe one or two hidden objects stashed there. But then I played the "strip club" level. I realized that besides just putting strippers and boobs back into the game, that level is actually a fun little exploration level with more than one way and more than one area to find all the items.

I heard complaints that there is no mighty boot, but there is, it's just automatic now, it's used when it needs to be and I kinda like that. It's not overused and it feels powerful. Speaking of which, all the weapons so far feel pretty good and sound nice and beefy.

Dukes animations are pretty good (and his jump animation in the mirror is a cool throw-back to the old duke). I like when he gets thrown or falls down and gets back up, it looks good and makes me feel more like I'm playing as duke. The enemy animations are good. The non player characters are what is lacking in both detail and animation

I thought his one liners would get annoying fast, but they aren't too bad, some made me laugh a little. Some of the encounters are truly funny. Some are not.

I also heard some people say there aren't enough enemies at once, but I had many encounters with a lot of enemies so I don't know what they are talking about.

Overall I feel like i'm playing in a real world with enough attention to detail to not be too bland. I don't know how far into the game I am. I am taking my time and not just rushing through and I probably have a good 7, maybe 8 hours with it so far and I'm glad I bought it. I have no regrets and am having fun with it.

So there is my opinion of the game so far. I'm tired of people bashing games just because they think it's cool to do so. How about for once an actual in depth review of all the games attributes by someone who wasn't purposely looking to find as much negative that they could and exaggerate it.

And just as a side note, I actually played Diakatana from start to finish and once the patch was released and you got past the misquitos and frogs in the very beginning, the game was actually quite good (for it's time of course). Yet most people wouldn't know it because reviewers were trying their best to steer people away from it. I see duke getting bad reviews because its not the best game ever, so instead of a 7 out of ten (that's what I would give it so far, and I played a lot of games over the years), they try to make a point by giving it a 3 or something stupidly low.

Sorry Graham, but you had me until you defended Daikatana... Daikatana was horrible horrible horrible. In every way possible. Patch or no patch it was an embarrassment.

I will play DNF on my PC, but I'm going to wait till the price comes down (which I would give 3-5 weeks). No way am I paying $50 for this, history or no...

Frankly, I don't think it will. The game is not really a Gearbox game, but rather a 3/4 finished game which they polished enough to release for historical reasons. I actually have MORE interest in the game since it is the dated POS it is than if they had scrapped everything and started from scratch.

The one thing that is evident from all the reviews is that this IS actually the game that took 14 years to get to market. As such, I'm just as curious as everyone else. That said, I just saw the Escapist review and they also panned it to crap. I think the main issue is that it isn't sexy, offensive, or funny... it is just stupid.

The best line from this video is the one where they comment of Duke responding "America, Fuck Yeah!" to some dialogue. That pretty much encapsulates it right there; it isn't clever, it isn't funny, it is just a piss-poor quote from a movie that was probably ten times as funny as this game.

All this said, it isn't Gearbox's fault at all. We all wanted to see this game for whatever it would turn out to be. The amount that has been written on the fiasco that was development alone is enough to interest non-gamers as to what this thing would turn out to be. In a strange way (as many reviewers have already stated), it is exactly what it should have been: a relic from a different time. Something that would have literally served as a good followup to Duke Nukem 3d.

If you've played Duke3d when you were younger, wait for the price to go waaaay down, because it will most likely ruin any good memories you've had of the character. Or you might be one of the few people who really enjoy DNF, who knows. I'm certainly not and I didn't even expect anything good from it.

Explain to me why Daikatana was horrible in your opinion?

Price for a game is a matter of economics, not a matter of how good the game is or is not which is why I hate when people rate it according to price. Sure price can be an indicator of value, but if duke was priced at 10 bucks, would it all of a sudden be a 10 out of 10 game? No, but you would be happier you got to play the game for less money. If you had millions in the bank, you would probably care less if you paid $50 or $20 for the game, you just want to know how damn good the game is.

I understand your intention was just to simply say the game doesn't interest you at full price. The rant was just directed at the idiots who score games low because they didn't like it being released at full price. I think I need some sleep, I'm being mr grumpy pants.

ponceleonsays...

You know, I can tell you that the fundamental thing that comes to mind about Daikatana was that it was entirely forgettable. I've been an avid gamer since BEFORE the Commodore 64, I've played the greats and I think back to games which were contemporaries of Daikatana, say Deus Ex and I can tell you every last detail about that game. Now, if you ask me about Planescape: Torment, another game that predates Daikatana, I can go on and on about why that game was amazing. Despite having played through all of Daikatana, all I have in my mind is the vague impression of a horribly put together game, poor (and arguably racist) voice acting, terribly outdated graphics for when it was released, drab design, unimaginative writing and a lot of broken promises.

What I mean by that last part was that there was a LOT that was promised in the development of the game that never happened. What was it? I can't remember worth a damn and that's the point. It was a minor blip that didn't live up to 1/10th of what John Romero promised and it certainly didn't make me his bitch.

I get what you are trying to say about Duke though. Hell, I even agree that it is something we NEED to play. But after watching videos and reviews, I really don't think it is a fluke that it is coming in at 40/50% reviews (at best). Like I said in another post, that moment where they compare Duke to that annoying uncle you thought was hilarious when you were 8, but now just see as sad and really unimaginative.

Again, I'll stand by Gearbox as well. We all wanted to see this mess and they did the work to bring it to us.

As for feeling like Mr. Grumpypants, no worries, I think DNF has made us ALL Mr. Grumpypants this week.

As far as Diakatana goes, that is why I think it was a good game, because I remember it and I remember enjoying a lot of parts. I played through at least twice, the second time using just the daikatana (for the most part) because if you remember, the more you used it the more powerful it became. It was fun smashing through hordes of enemies with a powerful sword. The other weapons were good and varied. You could also level up your attributes as you went along. The mythical greece and midieval norway levels were beautiful imo. It was like 4 smaller games rolled into one. Once the patch was out, your teammates didn't get in the way and sometimes helped out. The voice acting was more stereotypical versus actually racist and I think they were trying to inject some humor into it. There were a lot of secret areas to be found. I could go on, but thats enough about diakatana.

I found some positive reviews about Duke Nukem Forever so it's not all bad reviews: (these seem more like my experiences)

http://gamers-underground.com/content/978-review-duke-nukem-forever.html
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review/

And I think I was grumpy because I had a reaction to a wasp sting on my wrist which swelled up my hand and wrist bad enough I had to go to the hospital that day. I also couldn't play any more Duke

I think people have forgotten just how bad DN3D was. It was always a crappy parody of the 2D games with humor "borrowed" from elsewhere. This looks like a completely faithful sequel, so I'm not sure what people are complaining about.
