Drunken Master vs. The Stick King

Jackie Chan fights a man who calls himself The Stick King. Probably beacuse he fights with a stick. Great scene from the original movie from 1978.

This is the 2002 re-release which had a new English soundtrack created with matching 'dubtitles'. It's an abomination, to be honest.

If you make the mistake of selecting English audio, you'll find many of the original lines have been replaced with bad British humor, including the big moment at the end where Fei Hung establishes himself as a master. Gargling sounds were added to most scenes where Fei Hung is drinking and he whines and complains like a snotty rich kid throughout the entire movie.

Thankfully this is the Cantonese audio we're hearing, but the subtitles match the stupid English "translation". This is the same audio that is responsible for the King of Bamboo turning into the Stick King.

One of those rare occasions where the sequel was better than the original.

As a whole movie, I definitely agree. Comparing the fights alone, I have a hard time. Some people (possibly you?) can't stand this older style where they pause on each strike to show what's being done, but it doesn't bother me. I love both of these movies.

Is it strange that all i thought when i came out of this video was - I don't like the fact that every time he drinks he pours just about all of it down his shirt and none of it in his mouth, and the fact that he gets drunk 5 seconds after pouring a lot of drink down his shirt.

The bad sound effects, bad translations, bad humour, bad everything doesn't bother me at all!

I read Jackie's autobiography a few years ago and one story still sticks with me. He, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao were all at the Peking Opera school and were forced to balance, standing on their heads, for some sort of infraction. After a while, Jackie looks over and is amazed to find Yuen has fallen asleep, upside down and remaining balanced.
