Dog rescued after spending 10 years tied to a chain outside

"10 years on a chain. No blanket, toy, or bone. Often no clean food or water. AAS first saw her at night, lying in the frozen mud, being snowed and sleeted on. Lying in her own feces, surrounded by her own excrement" - LiveLeak

Animal abuse and neglect is a world-wide problem; lately however, it seems to be getting exponentially worse in British Columbia. I'm sure it's the same everywhere (it's just that most of the media I see on this is specific to Greater Vancouver), you can't get through the 6pm news without hearing about another animal some person has tortured.

Jesus Christ, that was like the saddest video I've ever seen. We need a *sad channel just for this video. I'm glad that dog got at least a couple of good years, but jeez... videos like this make me lose faith in humanity.

You have to be maxing out the psychopath tests to do something like that to an animal. But I don't know how neighbours could let that go for so long despite reporting it. I'd be campaigning to get the animal released asap, not shrugging my shoulders because Animal Control still hadn't shown up.

"And the time before did not count at all"

Bull-fucking-shit. Someone arrest the bastards who did this to this poor animal and fire the Animal control workers who took calls but did nothing. I'm with @Deano 100%, why didn't the neighbors alert the media? The first winter that began with the dog outside would have gotten be hopping mad. These neighbors watched this dog NEVER be taken in for 10 fucking years? What happened to decency? Did it just up and leave?

There are very few things in this world that upset me. Man's inhumanity to man, bothers me, but we're all fucktards so I can understand it. But animal cruelty, animal neglect, animals as commodities and resources, just upsets me more than it's possible to describe.

Just watch that video, look how that dog looks SO happy at being petted.

Come the revolutions, fucktards like this dog's owner are first up against the wall.

Congrats to the Animal rescue center for being brave and finally stepping in to help.

My parents adopted a German Sheppard that had spent the majority of 5 years chained up outside. They threw trash out in his area, cans, glass...he rarely had clean water and I think about as much of the food he ate was trash as it was actual dog food. This was down near my grandmother's property, they started giving him food and water and called the police/animal shelter. That went on for the better part of a year, and they eventually found out that they deemed the dogs living environment suitable because he had food and water every time they checked. Which my parents had been providing to him and they said it didn't matter who gave it to him as long as he had it.

Eventually they convinced someone at the property to give them the dog....and they hadn't had the dog for 2 days when the police showed up to take it back claiming the dog had been stolen. It took another day or so with police witnessing it that they were giving the dog to my parents and they've had him since. His collar had dug into his neck because he'd outgrown it, the tree had grown around his chain, he could barely move 5 feet in any direction. He's about 10 or 11 years old now. He had heart worms when they got him, bad joints although not nearly as bad as the dog in this video, fairly labored breathing due to the heart worms is the best guess, very afraid of lightning they couldn't put him in any sort of structure without him ruining it. He's gotten better about the lightning and behaving more like the other dog they have.

But before his previous owners lost/left their house in 2006-2008 range they had gotten another dog and had a bunch of cats. They of course didn't treat them well and when they lost the house they left most of the animals behind. So now that neighborhood has a huge stray cat problem, and my parents try to keep food and water out for them. I think there is one other person in that neighborhood that even bothers to try to make up for what those people did to those animals by feeding them and keeping water out, plus try to get them neutered so they can't keep breeding.

And I've seen a dog that I can't even guess how old it was chained outside a house, it had a little dog house but it's water bowl wasn't big enough to hold water all day on a hot day. It's horrible, but at some point you just can't call in on every animal problem you see because you'd spend all your time doing that....and the laws are so shitty when it comes to animal cruelty that the person just replaces the animal if someone were to take it.

Had a big paragraph typed out defending Vancouver's climate, and how the winters aren't as bad as most people view Canada...

but then I watched the video, even without sound I've decided I want to know the previous owner's captor's address.

Seriously!? There were people watching that dog get tortured for "many" years!? I love that she was rescued but watching a dog suffer like that for years and not doing something about it more than making a phone call is like watching someone get raped in an ally three stories below you and doing nothing about it.

I feel horrible and pained for the dog, I feel murderous for the previous "owners", but the people who did nothing more than make a phone call... they're hopeless.

Exactly!!! Ski-masks, gloves, pistols, and shotguns under the cover of night if needs be.

It's shocking how common this is, I remember seeing several cases like this when I was a kid and didn't dare to say anything. In my experience, most people who say they have an "outside dog" actually have a dog that is neglected and traumatized. I'm sure there are dogs that live on farms or in the country that are exceptions, but if it's kept on a chain or in a cage it's entire life that's fucked up. Dogs are social animals, even more than wolves, they've evolved to need company and approval. This video just strengthens my resolve that if I see this again, I'll do something about it.

This makes me realise how little I know about people. I can't put it into words. It makes me feel like I'm outside this somehow, like I'm an alien, trying to understand human psychology. I thought humans had consciences. So, why? Why did the people who owned her before even want a dog? What did they get out of it, except a walking urinal? What was in it for them to be so pointlessly cruel? Did it make them feel happy? Did they think of themselves as 'pet owners'? Did they think it was just OK to treat their dog this way? Did they just enjoy knowing that they had a neglected dog chained up outside? When they were in their beds on a winter's night, snug under their blankets in their heated bedroom, did it comfort them or give them amusement to know that their miserable, arthritic dog was chained up outside, unable to walk because of her illness and the weight of the clumps of her own frozen shit that choked her fur? Fucking WHY?

Ignorance and laziness make for a grotesque combination. Don't try to rationalize what irrational people do, just keep talking in the hopes that they will allow themselves to be educated.

I'm actually crying here. Not teary-eyed, mind you, but crying.

10 years? Years? Fuck animal control; the neighbors should have stolen the damn dog and brought her to a shelter.

Imagine what it would feel like to you to live like that for 10 years.

Now imagine you'd die when you were 11.

I hate dogs and find them obnoxious, malodorous, and over-rated, but COME ON, PEOPLE!

You've never had a dog. I am sad for you. If you ever do get the chance to know one, and perhaps own one, you will not only find that dogs are not only awesome in more ways than I can put into words, but they will give you a whole new dimension in life. Seriously. They can change your fucking life.

True, I'm not a big dog person but now that I've had my dog for a couple of years since she was a wee pup, I'd mangle anyone who treated her badly.

And I'm not ashamed to admit that watching this got me quite teary. If there is one redemptive quality about watching horrific shit like this, it's that seeing how bad one individual animal get's treated has far more impact than hearing that hundreds of thousands get mistreated. I think we need that occasional punch in the guts to remind us the sort of shit that goes on in the world, and how we should all be aware and try to do our part when an opportunity presents itself to make a difference. Statistics just can't do that.
